The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, the second oldest medical school in Thailand, was established in 1947 in accordance with the wishes of King Ananda Mahidol to educate a sufficient number of medical doctors to satisfy the public's demands. For more than half a century, this medical school has provided society with more than 5,000 medical doctors. The school accepts about 300 medical students and more than 100 for postgraduate residency training each year. It has been ranked as one of the best medical schools in Thailand in 2016. [1] [2]
The Faculty of Medicine Chulalongkorn University is the second oldest medical school in Thailand and has been founded in keeping with the wishes of King Ananda Mahidol to see the University of Medical Sciences (now Mahidol University) produce more doctors so as to provide better health care for his people and satisfy the public's demands. Acting on H.M. the King's wish, the Royal Thai Government allocated a sum of money to the University of Medical Sciences for expanding medical education. The school was then established in King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society. In pursuance of a royal decree, the Faculty of Medicine King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital was established on June 4, 1947 and was officially opened on June 11, 1947.
On October 1, 1967 the school was transferred from University of Medical Sciences to Chulalongkorn University, the oldest university in Thailand, and renamed as the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University.
Because of need to produce more rural medical doctors has been emphasized, the school initiated the Medical Education for Students in Rural Area Project (MESRAP) in 1978. Ministry of Public Health approved Chonburi Hospital & Prapokklao Hospital as teaching affiliates in this project, a new model of medical education in rural area, which was subsequently changed to the Collaborative Project to Increase Production of Rural Doctor (CPIRD).
For more than half a century, this medical school has provided society with more than 5,000 medical doctors who are not only highly qualified and well-trained, but also ethical and moral. In addition, it strongly advocates research in a wide variety of fields, promotes advancements in medical science and public health, and serves as a knowledge base for academics in Thailand and abroad.
As of the 2018 intake, a total of 313 undergraduate medical students are accepted into the course at the Faculty of Medicine. [3] The faculty introduced a graduate medicine international program in 2020, requiring applicants to have completed the MCAT. [4]
The present work provides on update on the publications of Thailand and Thai institutions in ISI Web of Science databases for the period 1999-2005. Comparison between the faculties of Medicine, Shows that in 2005, Chulalongkorn University produced the most publications at 156 papers, followed by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital with 101 papers and the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital with 70 papers. The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University has increased the international publications by 2.5 fold. [5]
Chulalongkorn University, nicknamed Chula, is a public and autonomous research university in Bangkok, Thailand. The university was originally founded during King Chulalongkorn's reign as a school for training royal pages and civil servants in 1899 at the Grand Palace of Thailand. It was later established as a national university in 1917, making it the oldest institute of higher education in Thailand.
Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand, the Princess Royal and the Princess Debaratana Rajasuda , formerly Princess Sirindhorn Debaratanasuda Kitivadhanadulsobhak, is the second daughter of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and younger sister of King Vajiralongkorn. Thais commonly refer to her as "Phra Thep", meaning "princess angel". Her title in Thai is the female equivalent of the title once held by her brother, King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The Thai constitution was altered in 1974 to allow for female succession, thus making her eligible for the throne. Having been the eldest female child of the royal family, her position is comparable to a princess royal.
Mahidol University (Mahidol), an autonomous research institution in Thailand, had its origin in the establishment of Siriraj Hospital in 1888. Mahidol had an acceptance rate for Medicine of 0.4% as of the 2016 academic year. Becoming the University of Medical Science in 1943, it has been recognized as the country's fourth public university. The university was later renamed in 1969 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej after his father, Prince Mahidol of Songkhla, the "Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health of Thailand". The university originally focused on health sciences but expanded to other fields in recent decades. It hosted Thailand's first medical school, the Siriraj Medical School. Today, Mahidol offers a range of graduate and undergraduate programs from natural sciences to liberal arts with remote campuses in Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Amnat Charoen provinces. There are a total of 629 programs offered from 17 faculties, 6 colleges, 9 research institutions and 6 campuses. In terms of fiscal budget and portion of budget spent on research programs, the university receives the highest budget of any public university in Thailand: $430 million in 2019, most of which is granted for graduate research programs. Mahidol University was ranked Thailand's #1 university in 2011 by QS Asian University Rankings.
Mahitala Dhibesra Adulyadej Vikrom, the Prince Father, formerly Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkla or Mahidol Songkla, was the father of King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, and the paternal grandfather of King Vajiralongkorn. He was also regarded as the father of modern medicine and public health in Thailand. He also founded the House of Mahidol or the present Royal Family of Thailand. His two sons reigned for more than eight decades, longer than the Ibn Saud siblings, and the Nahyan siblings of Abu Dhabi.
Galyani Vadhana, Princess of Naradhiwas was a princess of Thailand and the elder sister of King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej. She was also a direct granddaughter of King Chulalongkorn, and aunt of King Vajiralongkorn.
Princess Srinagarindra born Sangwan Talapat was a member of the Royal Thai Family. She was part of the House of Mahidol, which is descended from the Chakri Dynasty and was originated by Prince Mahidol Adulyadej. She was the mother of Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Princess of Naradhiwas, King Ananda Mahidol, and King Bhumibol Adulyadej and was the paternal grandmother of King Vajiralongkorn.
Sri Savarindira, also known as Savang Vadhana, was a consort and half-sister of Chulalongkorn, but she was not the Rajini or the highest ranked consort. After her first grandson's accession to power in 1935, she became known as Somdetch Phra Phan Vassa Ayika Chao. All her children died before her, so she lived to see her grandsons Ananda Mahidol and Bhumibol Adulyadej take the throne.
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University is the oldest and largest medical school and the oldest of any kind of university faculty in Thailand. The faculty is now part of Mahidol University. Founded in 1889, the faculty was run in co-operation with Siriraj Hospital, the first public hospital in Thailand, which provides students with clinical experience. The faculty's campus and hospital is in the Bangkok Noi District, Bangkok, on the former Rear Palace. The medical school accepts about 250 students for undergraduate education and more than 100 to postgraduate studies each year.

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulalongkorn University is the first Pharmacy school in Thailand, located in Bangkok. The faculty was founded by Prince Rangsit Prayurasakdi on December 8, 1913 as a department of Doctor for Compounding in the Royal Medical College, commonly called "Rong Rean Prung Ya" which means "School of Compounding Medicine". After the establishment of Chulalongkorn University in 1916, the Royal Medical College became the Faculty of Medicine under the university. The department of Compounding Medicine also had been renamed to "Panak Phat Pasom Ya" or "Doctor for Compounding Medicine Department" since April 6, 1917.
