Vessels from all parts of the world sailed to India down the ages for trade and many Indian sailors served on these ships. Sailing as a sport in India can be traced back to the first recorded race being sailed on 6 February 1830 in the western city of Bombay. Till the time the British left India in 1947, there were five active sailing clubs located at Bombay, Madras, Bangalore, Barrackpore and Nainital. Today, there are clubs located in Kerala, Pune, Goa, Hyderabad, and Bhopal. The Yachting Association of India is the governing body for sailing, windsurfing and motorboating in India. The Yachting Association of India was formally constituted on 15 May 1960. In 2011, Peter Conway of England was appointed as the national sailing coach. India’s first National Sailing School (NSS) was opened at the Upper Lake in Bhopal in 2006, with support from the Indian Navy and the Yachting Association of India.

Cecilia Carranza Saroli is an Argentine Olympic sailor. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's Laser Radial class, finishing in the 21st place. At the 2008 Summer Olympics she finished 8th in the same event. Cecilia won the gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she won the gold medal in the category Nacra 17 alongside fellow sailor Santiago Lange.
Cho Sung-min is a South Korean sailor, who specialized in two-person dinghy (470) and open match racing classes. He claimed a bronze medal, as a member of the South Korean sailing team, in match racing at the 2010 Asian Games, and later represented South Korea at the 2012 Summer Olympics. As of September 2013, Cho is ranked no. 134 in the world for two-person dinghy class by the International Sailing Federation.
Yugo Yoshida is a Japanese 11sailor, who specializes in the two-person dinghy (470) class. He shared gold medals with his partner Ryunosuke Harada in the 470 class at the 2010 Asian Games, and later represented Japan at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Throughout most of his sailing career, Yoshida trained for the ABeam Consulting Team under his personal coach and mentor Kazunori Komatsu. As of September 2013, Yoshida is ranked no. 190 in the world for two-person dinghy class by the International Sailing Federation.
Singapore competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's sixteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics, except for two different editions. Singapore was part of the Malaysian team at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, but did not attend at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, because of its support for the United States boycott.
Oman competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when the event was held from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's ninth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. Four Omani athletes, two men and two women, were selected to compete in athletics and shooting at the Games. Among them were sprinter Barakat Al-Harthi, the lone returning Olympian from the previous Games.
