Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad. With the exception of 1904 and possibly the cancelled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 2008 consisted of a total of nine sailing classes. Eleven races are scheduled for each event except for the 49er class, for which 16 races are scheduled from 9 August 2008 to 21 August 2008 of the coast of the Qingdao International Sailing Centre facing the Yellow Sea. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) are scheduled as opening races and one as a medal race. The sailing was done on four different types of courses.

Yachting Association of Sri Lanka (YASL) is recognised by the International Sailing Federation as the governing body for the sport of sailing in Sri Lanka.

Sailing was contested at the 2002 Asian Games from October 3 to October 9. Competition took place in various sailing disciplines at the Busan Yachting Center. 15 Gold medals were awarded in the various classes competing, from the Olympic 470 and Mistral to the Junior Optimist, in a regatta that saw very few of the eleven scheduled races not completed for all classes.

Sailing at the 2010 Asian Games was held in Shanwei Water Sports Center, Shanwei, China from 14 to 20 November 2010.

Goshpi Avari is a Pakistani Asian Games gold medalist in sailing. She won the medal with her husband, Byram, at the 1982 Games. She was the first and, until 2010, the only Pakistani woman to have won a gold medal at a major international competition.

The Pakistan Sailing Federation is the national governing body of the sport of sailing in Pakistan. Affiliated with World Sailing and the Asian Sailing Federation, it has its headquarters at the National Sailing Centre in Clifton, Karachi.

Commander Mahesh Ramchandran is a retired Indian Naval Officer. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, with a Bachelor of Science degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Mahesh was awarded the Arjuna Award on 29 August 2002 for the year 2001. This was conferred to him by the then President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Park Kil-chul is a South Korean sailor. He competed in the Finn event at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
