The Philippines participated in the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi, India from November 19 to December 4, 1982. Ranked 10th with 2 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 9 bronze medals with a total of 14 over-all medals. [1]
A year after emerging as the country's newest track sensation with a golden double at the 1981 Manila Southeast Asian Games, Lydia de Vega became Asia's sprint darling, winning the century dash in the 1982 Asian Games. The 17-year old De Vega bagged the 100-meter dash in 11.76 seconds to become Asia's fastest woman.[ citation needed ]
It was only one of the two gold medals won by the 114-man contingent, but it was enough to brighten another dismal performance by the Philippines in the quadrennial meet. A swimmer named William "Billy" Wilson maintained swimming's legacy as a perennial source of medals, winning the gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle. [2]

Joseph Eric Buhain is the chairman of the Philippines' Games and Amusement Board. Buhain is also a champion swimmer, winning several Southeast Asian Games medals for the Philippines and participating in the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics.

Elma Muros-Posadas also known as the "Long Jump Queen" of the Philippines and a heptathlon champion, is a former member of the Philippine Track and Field National Team and now a legend in Philippine track and field history who specialized in long jump. She also competed in the heptathlon, 100m and 400m hurdles, 100m, 200m, and 400m sprint alongside the "Sprint Queen" of the Philippines and also fellow legend, Lydia de Vega. Elma is one of the foremost track and field athletes produced by the Philippines under the Marcos Regime's National Sports Program, Gintong Alay, that was launched in 1979, but was eventually disbanded in 1986 due to the People Power Revolution and the ousting of Ferdinand Marcos. Later on Gintong Alay was disbanded and became the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) which was established in 1990.
