Fatorda is a suburb of the city of Margao [1] in Salcete, Goa. Fatorda has been originally home to the traditional Scheduled Tribe/Scheduled Caste population. [2] The Catholic Gawda community has a very large presence in Fatorda. However, due to the increasing number of buildings in Fatorda, [3] the population has become more diverse. [3]

Population

Fatorda has a large number of people belonging to the aboriginal Gawda community. Luis Alex Cardozo, fondly known as "Mama" Cardozo, was the leader of the Gawda community and represented the Fatorda constituency in Goa state Assembly for a long time. [6] However, the population of Fatorda has now become diverse. A number of non- Goans have now made Fatorda their home and this suburb maintains a diverse population. A multiple number of multi-storeyed residential complexes in Fatorda have led to Fatorda being a thriving suburb with a population of many communities. Although Goan Catholic Gawdas and Hindus form a dominant part of the population, there is a considerable number of Muslims in Fatorda who stay in areas such as Chandrawada. [7] [8] [9]

Education

Fatorda has a few government primary and high schools. [10] [11] There are a few private primary level schools in Fatorda. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

There also exist private and aided High Schools in Fatorda. A prominent High School in Fatorda is the Diocesan Society of Education's 'Our Lady of Rosary High School'. [17] A Higher Secondary named the Jawaharlal Nehru Higher Secondary School also exists in Fatorda.

Located in Fatorda is the Don Bosco College of Engineering www.dbcegoa.ac.in - The Fatorda Salesians Society's, which is operated by Salesian priests. It hosted the relics of St. John Bosco during its world tour, on 21 and 22 August 2011,. [18] The Parvatibai Chowgule College, Adarsh Institute of Management [19] and the Jawaharlal Nehru Higher Secondary School [20] are also located in Fatorda.

Landmarks

Fatorda Stadium, named after Jawaharlal Nehru, is a multi-purpose, but mainly used for football stadium situated there. Built in the late 1980s, this is Goa's main stadium, having a seating capacity of 19,000 [21] It has hosted a number of international football matches and a lesser number of One Day International cricket matches. It is widely used for the Indian national football league games.

The main bus stand serving South Goa also lies in Fatorda, after being shifted out of Margão to ensure lack of traffic congestion in the heart of Margão. Fatorda also has a few bars and multi cuisine restaurants that serve some tasty dishes and drinks. A number of real estate companies also exist here and for accommodation one can find quite a number of villas and apartments. The South Goa District Collectorate office is also located in Fatorda. Governance

Fatorda is a part of the South Goa Lok Sabha Constituency and the Fatorda Assembly Constituency. Fatorda is under Margao Municipal Council's jurisdiction. Of the total 25 wards of the Margao Municipal Council, 11 constitute the electorate from Fatorda. [23]

Fatorda has a police station and a post office. [24] [25]

Culture

There is a church in Fatorda known as the Our Lady of Rosary Church and also a chapel. A school known as the Rosary School is also located in the Rosary Church Complex. One can also find a temple known as the Shree Damodar Ling Devasthan located near the Stadium. It is considered as the original abode of Lord Damodar, before he was shifted to Zambaulim. The Ravindra Bhavan Margao is also located in Fatorda. It is a cultural centre and promotes Tiatr, drama, art and culture. [26] The 42nd International Film Festival of India was inaugurated at the Ravindra Bhavan Margao by bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan in 2011. [27]

The Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium or locally known as The Fatorda is a football stadium situated in Margao, Goa, India. The venue has been used to host both international football as well as International cricket matches.However after the emergence of I-League in 2007 and Indian Super League in 2014, the stadium is turned into football only stadium. It is Goa's only international stadium and has a seating capacity of 19000 with additional 1000 in reserve. It has hosted 9 ODIs in Cricket and hosted various football tournaments including multiple Indian Super League finals and AFC Champions League. The venue was established in 1989 and is owned and operated by the Sports Authority of Goa. It is currently the home stadium of Indian Super League club FC Goa, I-League club Churchill Brothers FC Goa.

Curchorem (Kudchade) is a town and municipal council in the South Goa district of Goa, India. Curchorem is a part of the Quepem taluka and is a twin town with Sanvordem, both located on either side of the Zuari River. The town is self-sufficient and has a number of hospitals, schools, a police station, banks, ATMs, a railway station, good road links, a market, places of worship, restaurants, a play ground, an electricity station and a theatre.

The I-League 2008–2009 season began on 26 September 2008 and finished on 16 April 2009 with a break in December for the Federation Cup and Durand Cup. Most games this season were played on Saturday's and Sunday's to attract larger crowds. Football Club Goa is an Indian professional football club based in Goa, that competes in the Indian Super League, the top flight of Indian football. The club was established on 26 August 2014. Nicknamed as Gaurs, the club plays their home matches at the Fatorda Stadium in Margao.

The 2014–15 Indian Federation Cup, also known as the Hero Federation Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the 36th edition of the Federation Cup, the main national football cup competition in India. Ten of the eleven I-League clubs participated in the tournament the season with Bharat FC being the excluded club.

2016 AFC U-16 Championship International football competition

The 2016 AFC U-16 Championship was the 17th edition of the AFC U-16 Championship, the biennial international youth football championship organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the men's under-16 national teams of Asia. The tournament was held in India, as announced by the AFC on 3 June 2015, and was played between 15 September and 2 October 2016. A total of 16 teams played in the tournament.

The 2015 Indian Super League playoffs was the second playoffs series at the end of the Indian Super League season. The playoffs began on 11 December and culminated on 20 December with the final.

The 2015–16 Indian Federation Cup, also known as 2015–16 Hero Federation Cup due to sponsorship reasons was the 37th edition of the Federation Cup, the main national football cup competition in India. The tournament was held from 30 April 2016 to 21 May 2016. Top 8 teams from 2015–16 I-League participated in the tournament. Ten Sports Network, the Official Broadcaster of Hero Federation Cup 2016 will telecast only the Semi-finals and the Final match while Knockout stage matches will be streamed live on I-league website.

Vijai Sardesai Indian politician

Vijai Sardesai is an Indian politician who is currently a member of the Goa Legislative Assembly representing the Fatorda constituency and belongs to the Goa Forward Party. Sardesai held the portfolios of Town & Country Planning; Agriculture; Archives & Archeology; as well as Factories & Boilers in the Government of Goa, until his withdrawal from the cabinet of ministers on 13 July 2019.

Goa Forward Party Political party in India

Goa Forward Party is a regional political party in the western coastal Indian state of Goa, led by Vijai Sardesai. The GFP fielded four candidates in the 2017 Goa Assembly election and won three seats. It played a crucial, if controversial, role in the return of the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the March 2017 election results in Goa. The party's motto is "Goem, Goemkar, Goemkarponn". The party was launched on 25 January 2016 and its symbol is the coconut.
