The Federal Ministry of Environment is a ministry of the Federal Government of Nigeria created in 1999 with a mandate to address environmental issues and to ensure the effective coordination of all environmental matters in the country. [1] The ministry works to ensure the control of environmental issues and the protection and conservation of natural resources. It also formulates policies and supervises activities for curbing desertification and deforestation;the management of flood, erosion and pollution, as well as climate change and clean energy.

Balarabe Abbas Lawal is the current Minister of Environment; while Iziaq Adekunle Salako is the current Minister of State for Environment. They took charge of the affairs of the ministry in 2023 after they were appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Responsibilities

The ministry plays various roles involving the national goals on desertification, deforestation, pollution, and waste management. It also superintends over climate change and clean energy issues and enforces environmental standards and regulations in different parts of the country.

The ministry fulfills its responsibilities through its departments and parastatals. Some of these parastatals include: National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), National Park Service (NPS), National Agency for the Great Green Wall, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). The ministry also supervises and provides fund for research institutes such as the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), and the Environmental Health and Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), among others.

Achievements of the Ministry

One of the major achievements of the Federal Ministry of Environment is the initiation of the Ogoniland clean-up programme of the Nigerian government. [8] [9] Ogoniland is one of the communities in the oil-rich Niger Delta region that has been devastated by the exploration activities of oil producing companies. Other achievements of the ministry and its parastatals include the Clean and Green initiatives in the States of Nigeria, Great Green Wall Programme, and the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project. The Ogoni is an ethnic group located in Rivers South-East senatorial district of Rivers State, in the Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. They number just over 2 million and live in a 1,050-square-kilometre (404-square-mile) homeland which they also refer to as Ogoniland. They share common oil-related environmental problems with the Ijaw people of the Niger Delta.

Environmental issues in the Niger Delta are caused by its petroleum industry. The delta covers 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi) within wetlands of 70,000 km2 (27,000 sq mi) formed primarily by sediment deposition. Home to 20 million people and 40 different ethnic groups, this floodplain makes up 7.5% of Nigeria's total land mass. It is the largest wetland and maintains the third-largest drainage basin in Africa. The Delta's environment can be broken down into four ecological zones: coastal barrier islands, mangrove swamp forests, freshwater swamps, and lowland rainforests. Fishing and farming are the main sources of livelihoods for majority of her residents.

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is a federal government agency established by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo in the year 2000, with the sole mandate of developing the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. In September 2008, President Umaru Yar'Adua announced the formation of a Niger Delta Ministry, with the Niger Delta Development Commission to become a parastatal under the ministry. One of the core mandates of the commission is to train and educate the youths of the oil rich Niger Delta regions to curb hostilities and militancy, while developing key infrastructure to promote economic diversification and productivity.

The agency functions as a parastatal enterprise of the Federal Ministry of Environment, and it is headed by a director general, who is also the chief executive officer of about 483 companies in the NESREA corporate family. Human activities that have negative effects on the environment are covered by NESREA's 33 National Environmental Regulations. The agency's authority includes process and equipment monitoring, compliance with set standards, disciplining violators of set rules, conducting public investigations, and submission of proposals to the minister for review in order to maintain environmental quality.

Marvin Dekil, is a Nigerian environmental scientist, lawyer, businessman and politician. In 2017, President Mohammadu Buhari appointment of Dr. Dekil Pioneer Project Coordinator of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), the agency responsible for the implementation of UNEP Environmental Assessment report and cleanup of oil polluted sites in Ogoniland and Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

He is a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) is the regulator of Nigerian colleges of education. It formulates National Policy framework for the full development of teacher education and training of teachers. NCCE defines minimum standards for all programmes of teacher education and accredit their certificates and other academic awards.

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) is a Nigerian federal agency under the Federal Ministry of Environment (Nigeria), established to address land degradation and desertification, boost food security and support communities to adapt to climate change in the Nigerian states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Kastina, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa. The NAGGW serves as the Nigerian focal point for the actualisation of the vision of the African Union’s Great Green Wall of the Sahara and the Sahel project. The mission of the NAGGW is to halt and reverse land degradation, prevent depletion of biological diversity, ensure that by 2025, ecosystems are resilient to climate change and continue to provide essential services that would contribute to human welfare and poverty eradication.

The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission is an agency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that oversees the revenues accruing to and disbursement of such funds from the Federal Account. The Body also ensures that there is conformity and equity in the nation's revenue allocation formulae.

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sport Development is responsible for youths and sports affairs in Nigeria. The Ministry is the outcome of the merger of the defunct Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) by the proclamation of President Muhammadu Buhari on the restructuring of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of Government on 11 November 2016. This departments focusing on enterprise development, vocational skills & training, youth voice, employment, and education.
