Ronnie Fillemon Kanalelo (born 23 May 1971) is a retired Namibian footballer. He took temporary charge of the Namibian national football team in June 2015 following the resignation of Ricardo Mannetti.

Club career

Nicknamed Magnet, Kanalelo was born in Okongo, in the Ohangwena Region close to the Angolan border, but moved to Walvis Bay aged 2. There, he started playing football alongside future national team mate Eliphas Shivute at Kuisebmond township side Super Stars. [1] He played senior football from 1991–1997 with Eleven Arrows, Blue Waters and Black Africa of the Namibia Premier League and from 1997–2005 with Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa.

International career

He also played internationally with Namibia from 1992–1999. He has represented his country in 9 FIFA World Cup qualification matches [2] and played all 3 matches at the 1998 African Cup of Nations for Namibia. [3] He made his debut for the Brave Warriors in an October 1992 [4] World Cup qualification match against Madagascar and totalled 53 games for them. [5] His international career was cut short when he took up South African citizenship in 2000 (with Namibian law not allowing dual nationality) but he had a change of thoughts in 2001. [6]

Managerial career

On 17 August 2010, Kanalelo become the new head coach of Tura Magic Football Club who play in the Southern Stream First Division. [7] In November 2010 he became manager of Tigers. [8]

In July 2011 he returned to South Africa to be goalkeeper coach at Maritzburg United. [9]

Kanalelo was reported to be the new Black Africa manager in January 2015, succeeding Brian Isaacs, after being dismissed as golakeeper coach at South African side Bloemfontein Celtic [10] On 18 June 2015, it was announced that he would lead the Namibian national team on a temporary basis. [11]

In October 2022, Kanalelo took charge of UNAM with former international team colleague Robert Nauseb working as his assistant. [12] He had worked at UNAM before, from 2016 [13] until late 2018. [14]

The Namibia Premier League (NPL) was the highest level of domestic association football in Namibia until it was disbanded following the 2018/2019 season. The league was established in 1990 and was trimmed to 12 teams from the traditional 16 in 2005. It was disbanded in 2020 after ongoing problems with the Namibia Football Association, which finally ended the relationship. The NFA founded the Namibia Football Premier League to replace it. The new league kicked off with the 2022/2023 season with African Stars against Unam at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium.
