Sharad Pawar broke away in 1978 from Government of Maharashtra led by Vasantdada Patil of Indian National Congress, formed the Indian National Congress (Socialist), allied with the Janata party and the Peasants' and Workers' Party of India (PWP) to form a coalition government of the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) or Purogami Lokshahi Aghadi. The Progressive Democratic Front government was sworn in on 18 July 1978. This government was dismissed on 18 February 1980 following Indira Gandhi's return to power at the Centre. [1] [2]

Sharad Govindrao Pawar is an Indian politician. He has served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for four terms and has also served in the Union Council Of Ministers as the Minister of Defence in the Cabinet of P.V Narsimha Rao and Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinet of Manmohan Singh. He is the first and current president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which he founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress. He leads the NCP delegation in the Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Indian parliament. He is the chairperson of Maha Vikas Aghadi, a regional Maharashtra-based political alliance.

In July 2023, majority of the elected MLAs and MLCs of the party led by Ajit Pawar joined the National Democratic Alliance government, however, all MPs except two are expected to remain loyal to Sharad Pawar. This caused a direct split between the Ajit Pawar-led NCP Faction and the Founder and President of the party Sharad Pawar.

The United Progressive Alliance was a political alliance in India led by the Indian National Congress. It was formed after the 2004 general election with support from left-leaning political parties when no single party got the majority.

The Indian National Congress (U) was a breakaway faction of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress (I), formed in July 1979 by D. Devaraj Urs, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka. Urs' explanation of the split was the return of Indira's son Sanjay Gandhi into the party fold. Urs took with him many legislators from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa including future Union Ministers and Chief Ministers, Yashwantrao Chavan, Dev Kant Baruah, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, A.K. General elections were held in India on 3 and 6 January 1980 to elect the members of the seventh Lok Sabha. The Janata Party alliance came into power in the 1977 general elections amidst public anger with the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Emergency. However, its position was weak; the loose coalition barely held on to a majority with only 295 seats in the Lok Sabha and never quite had a firm grip on power. Bharatiya Lok Dal leaders Charan Singh and Jagjivan Ram, who had quit the INC, were members of the Janata alliance but were at loggerheads with Prime Minister Morarji Desai. The tribunals the government had set up to investigate human rights abuses during the Emergency appeared vindictive.

Uttamrao Laxmanrao Patil alias Nanasaheb was an Indian politician and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected to Second Lok Sabha from 1957 to 1962 from Dhulia Lok Sabha Constituency of erstwhile Bombay State as a candidate of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was elected to Ninth Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991 from Erandol Lok Sabha Constituency of Maharashtra as a candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party. He was also a Member of Maharashtra Legislative Council during 1954-55 and from 1966 to 1978. He was the Leader of Opposition of the council from 1966 to 1978. He was state cabinet minister from 1978 to 1980 in the Progressive Democratic alliance Government of Maharashtra state led by Sharad Pawar. He held revenue portfolio. He was an advocate by profession. Shri Patil authored two books. He was also the founder editor of Sudarshan weekly. He died on 18 November 2001 at Mumbai.

United Front, known until 1971 as Mini Front (1970–1971) and as Maxi Front (1971–1979) thereafter, was a coalition of political parties in Kerala state, India, which was the ruling combine in the state from 1970 to 1979. <span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election</span> Assembly election in Maharashtra

The 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election was held on 21 October 2019 to elect all 288 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. After a 61.4% turnout in the election, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (SHS) won a majority. Following differences over the government formation, the alliance was dissolved, precipitating a political crisis.

A political crisis in the Indian state of Maharashtra occurred on 21 October 2019 after the declaration of results of the 2019 legislative assembly election over the formation of a new state government. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party Shiv Sena alliance crossed the majority of 145 seats needed in the assembly by winning a total of 161 seats in the alliance. Individually BJP won 105 and SHS won 56 seats. The Opposition INC-NCP Alliance with 106 seats did not reach the majority mark. Individually INC won 44 and NCP won 54 seats.

On resignation of Shankarrao Chavan on 26 June 1988, Sharad Pawar was appointed Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the second time. Pawar formed his second ministry, which continued in office until legislative elections in 1990.

In the aftermath of 1978 Maharashtra legislative elections, Vasantdada Patil of the Indian National Congress(U) was appointed Chief Minister. A coalition government, it consisted of members from Congress(Urs) and Congress (I), including Deputy Chief Minister Nashikrao Tirpude.
