Prithviraj Chavan was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 11 November 2010. [1] The following is his cabinet. The government consisted of Chavan's Congress party and the Nationalist Congress Party. [1]
The two parties had secured a majority of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly seats in the 2009 election, and a government under Congress' Ashok Chavan (No relation to Prithviraj Chavan) was formed. [2] However, following graft allegation related to Adarsh Housing Society scam, Chavan resigned as the Chief Minister in November 2010. [3] Subsequently, Prithviraj Chavan, then a Rajya Sabha member from Maharashtra, and Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was chosen by the Congress to lead the Maharashtra government. He was sworn in on 11 November 2010, and subsequently, formed his only cabinet till date. The reasons cited for Chavan's appointment included his relatively corruption-free "clean image" and his lack of allegiance to any of the state's intra-party factions. [4] [5] [6]
Chavan made some changes in his predecessor's cabinet, by including some new ministers and reshuffling portfolios. [7] He also replaced Ashok Chavan's Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal [8] with Ajit Pawar, who has since served as deputy to two more Chief Ministers.
The Chavan ministry served until its defeat in the 2014 Legislative Assembly election by the BJP and Shiv Sena.
Prithviraj Chavan had never been a member of the state's Legislative Assembly. He had previously represented Karad in the Indian parliament's lower house from 1991 to 1999, and had been appointed to the upper house in 2002. A computer scientist by profession, Chavan had served as junior minister in the ministries of Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Parliamentary Affairs and as Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office. On his appointment as the Chief Minister, Chavan was elected to the State's upper house, the Legislative Council in April 2011. [9]
Chavan appointed coalition partner NCP's Ajit Pawar as his Deputy Chief Minister. [10] Pawar has since intermittently served as Deputy Chief Minister under both the state's next two Chief Ministers - Devendra Fadnavis (2019), and Uddhav Thackeray (Since 2019).[ citation needed ]
The cabinet consisted of 40 members, 20 each from the two coalition parties. [10] The parties occasionally included independent members, utilizing their ministerial quotas.[ citation needed ]

Maharashtra is India's third largest state by area and has over 112 million inhabitants. Its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million; Nagpur is Maharashtra's second, or winter, capital. Government in the state is organized on the parliamentary system. Power is devolved to large city councils, district councils, subdistrict (taluka) councils, and village parish councils. The numerically strong Maratha–Kunbi community dominates the state's politics. The state has national and regional parties serving different demographics, such as those based on religion, caste, and urban and rural residents.
The 2014 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election was held on 15 October 2014 to elect all 288 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. After a 63.38% turnout in the election as hung verdict has occurred with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shivsena (SHS) emerged as largest and second largest parties.
Although a parliamentary democracy, Indian politics has increasingly become dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978 when Indira Gandhi floated the then Congress(I) faction of the party. It also is fairly common in many political parties in Maharashtra. The dynastic phenomenon is seen from national level down to district level and even village level. The three-tier structure of Panchayati Raj established in the 1960s also helped to create and consolidate the dynastic phenomenon in rural areas. Apart from government, political families also control cooperative institutions, mainly cooperative sugar factories, district cooperative banks in the state, and since the 1980s private for profit colleges. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also features several senior leaders who are dynasts. In Maharashtra, the NCP has particularly high level of dynasticism.
The incumbent Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan led his Congress party and alliance partner NCP to an electoral majority in the 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election. He subsequently formed his second cabinet. Chavan had been the Chief Minister since 8 December 2008, and would continue to serve until 9 November 2010, when he resigned at the backdrop of corruption allegations.
Ashok Chavan was sworn in as Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time in 2008, after his predecessor, Vilasrao Deshmukh resigned the office in the aftermath of 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. The first Chavan ministry governed until the 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, which resulted in a victory for Chavan-led Congress-NCP alliance and Chavan forming his second ministry.
On resignation of Shankarrao Chavan on 26 June 1988, Sharad Pawar was appointed Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the second time. Pawar formed his second ministry, which continued in office until legislative elections in 1990.
After the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, post-poll alliance was formed in between Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Indian National Congress to form Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Uddhav Thackeray, the president of Shiv Sena was sworn in as the 19th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 28 November 2019. Following is the list of ministers from the cabinet of Uddhav Thackeray starting from November 2019.
