Ganesh Ramchandra Naik (born 15 September 1950) is an Indian politician. [2] He is the Bharatiya Janata Party member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 150-Airoli Assembly constituency. [3] He represented Thane constituency in the past, [4] and was the Thane Guardian Minister in the state government. [5] He was the minister of Labour, Excise and Environment in the previous government. [6] [7]

On February 9, 2023, Ganesh received the Maharashtra Gaurav Award for his contributions to social work. [8] The award ceremony was held at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, where Ganesh was honored by the former Governor of Maharashtra, Bhagat Singh Koshyari. [9]

Biography

Ganesh Naik was born on 15 September 1950 [10] in the village of Bonkode, located in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. [11] He comes from a family of farmers [12] and began serving the people of Navi Mumbai at a young age. He has held various positions such as a trade union leader and served on Gram Panchayats. [10] In 1994-95, he was elected as MLA in the state of Maharashtra. During his tenure, he served as the Minister of Environment in the Maharashtra government. He was re-elected as an MLA for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2009 and 2009 to 2014. [10] Throughout these periods, he held the position of Cabinet Minister for Excise, Environment, and New & Renewable Energies. [13] In 2019, he was elected for his fourth term as an MLA from the Airoli constituency in Navi Mumbai. [14] In the assembly elections conducted in November-2024 he won again with an amazing 1.5 Lakh votes leaving all the cantestents far behind. He is the only MLA from Airoli constituency to continue 5 terms. He has also sworn in as a cabinet minister under the Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadanavis. He was among the top ten candidates who won with a record margin. [15] Ganesh Naik and his wife, Mandakini Naik, have two sons named Sanjeev Naik and Sandeep Naik. [10]

Political career

Ganesh Naik began his career as an MLA in 1990 with Shiv Sena. [12] He joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the year 1999 when Sharad Pawar founded the party. [16] He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019. [17]

Bharatiya Janata Party

In July 2019, Ganesh Naik, his younger son, Sandeep Naik, and over 50 corporators from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and then party's Maharashtra unit chief Chandrakant Patil at Vashi in Navi Mumbai. During the March 2023 Maharashtra State Assembly Session, Ganesh raised 245 objections and provided suggestions for Navi Mumbai's 20-year development plan, [18] emphasizing the importance of essential civic facilities and infrastructure in different areas. He also spoke about the shortcomings of initial planning by CIDCO in the 1970s. Ganesh also pointed out that CIDCO is yet to transfer 550 amenities plots to NMMC. [19]

In addition, Ganesh has urged the government to facilitate the transfer of remaining amenity plots from MIDC to NMMC for the provision of amenities in MIDC areas. [20]

NMMC & Navi Mumbai

Ganesh's party has maintained control over the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) since its establishment in 1992. [21] The NMMC has undertaken various municipal projects, such as the construction of the Morbe Dam, digitization of municipal schools, and the establishment of municipal hospitals. [22]

Janta Darbars (People’s Court)

Ganesh gained recognition as the first minister in Maharashtra to introduce Janata Darbar, a public forum connecting citizens with civic administration to address grievances. He conducted numerous Janata Darbars in both urban and rural areas. [23]

He also served as 2nd Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002 and thereafter, was the leader of the opposition in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2003. He also served as an MLC in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and MLA in Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. He later served as an MP in Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014 from Uttarakhand and then the MP in the 16th Lok Sabha from Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar constituency, earning him the distinction of being elected in both houses of State Legislature and both houses of National Parliament respectively.

Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis is an Indian politician who is currently serving as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra since 5 December 2024, and previously held this position for two terms from 2014 to 2019. He previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, alongside Ajit Pawar in the Eknath Shinde government. Besides this, from 2019 to 2022, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He was the President of BJP's Maharashtra state unit from 2013 to 2015. He became Chief Minister at the age of 44, making him the second-youngest in Maharashtra's history after Sharad Pawar.

Although a parliamentary democracy, Indian politics has increasingly become dynastic, possibly due to the absence of a party organization, independent civil society associations that mobilize support for the party, and centralized financing of elections. Family members have also led the Congress party for most of the period since 1978 when Indira Gandhi floated the then Congress(I) faction of the party. It also is fairly common in many political parties in Maharashtra. The dynastic phenomenon is seen from national level down to district level and even village level.The three-tier structure of Panchayati Raj established in the 1960s also helped to create and consolidate the dynastic phenomenon in rural areas. Apart from government, political families also control cooperative institutions, mainly cooperative sugar factories, district cooperative banks in the state, and since the 1980s private for profit colleges. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party also features several senior leaders who are dynasts. In Maharashtra, the NCP has particularly high level of dynasticism.

Sanjay Ramchandra Patil is a politician from Tasgaon of Sangli district of Maharashtra state in India.

Shrikant Eknath Shinde is an Indian politician serving as a member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. He represents the Kalyan constituency of Maharashtra and is a member of the Shiv Sena political party.

Vidya Jaiprakash Thakur is an Indian politician from Maharashtra. She is a three time MLA and a member of 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Goregaon representing the Bharatiya Janata Party from Goregaon Assembly constituency. He is also the Member of Legislative Assembly for the Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency of Thane, Maharashtra, since 2009 and was formerly the MLA of Thane constituency from 2004 to 2009.

Yogesh Sagar is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a three term member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He is well known for his social work. He has also been awarded the ‘Best MLA Award’ for three consecutive years by Praja Foundation.
