The Fisker Atlantic is a plug-in hybrid concept car first shown to the public at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012. [2] Produced by the American car manufacturer Fisker Automotive, it was to be a smaller addition to the range to sit below the Fisker Karma. [3]
The Atlantic was scheduled to become Fisker Automotive's second production car, after plans to produce the Fisker Surf and Sunset variants of its full-size Karma were shelved earlier in 2012. Production was initially scheduled to begin by the end of 2012 at Wilmington Assembly, a former General Motors plant in Wilmington, Delaware. By October 2012, the carmaker decided to postpone production for late 2014 or 2015 due to financial constraints, [4] but following Fisker's bankruptcy and subsequent purchase by Wanxiang, possible production of the Atlantic was postponed to the end of 2017. [5]
Originally called "Project Nina", [6] the Atlantic shares the range-extender system from the larger Karma, which employs a petrol engine that can be turned on to generate electricity to recharge the batteries and power the electric drive motors. A four-cylinder BMW petrol engine serves this role in the Atlantic. The Atlantic is rear-wheel drive, with the option of four-wheel drive.
Similar in design to the Karma, the Atlantic is a 4-door, 4-seat sedan with C-pillar door handles and it is a D-segment sedan. [7] Although the details are not finalized, Fisker has compared the vehicle to the Audi A5 and BMW 335i in terms of size and price range. [8] The expected all-electric range is 30 mi (48 km). [9]

The history of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) spans a little more than a century, but most of the significant commercial developments have taken place after 2002. The revival of interest in this automotive technology together with all-electric cars is due to advances in battery and power management technologies, and concerns about increasingly volatile oil prices and supply disruption, and also the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2003 and 2010 most PHEVs on the roads were conversions of production hybrid electric vehicles, and the most prominent PHEVs were aftermarket conversions of 2004 or later Toyota Prius, which have had plug-in charging and more lead-acid batteries added and their electric-only range extended.

He is the founder of HF Design, co-founded VLF Automotive, founder and former CEO of Fisker Coachbuild, founder of Fisker Automotive, where he served as chairman and CEO until March 2013, and currently is the founder, chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc.
Fisker Automotive was an American company known for producing the Fisker Karma, which was one of the world's first production luxury plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. It debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, and first deliveries were in 2011. Production of the Fisker Karma was suspended in November 2012 due to bankruptcy of its battery supplier A123 Systems, with about 2,450 Karmas built since 2011 and over 2000 cars sold worldwide. In February 2014, Fisker Automotive's Karma vehicle design, tooling and a manufacturing facility in Delaware were purchased by Chinese auto parts conglomerate Wanxiang Group. Henrik Fisker, the founder of Fisker Automotive, retained the Fisker trademarks and the Fisker brand and launched a separate company, Fisker Inc., in 2016. Wanxiang later renamed its new company Karma Automotive.

Plug-in electric vehicle fire incidents have taken place between the introduction of mass-production plug-in electric vehicles in 2010 and 2014, when the battery type was changed to nickel-metal hydride batteries which do not pose the same risk of thermal runaway as lithium-ion batteries. As a result of these incidents, the United States, Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a study to establish whether lithium-ion batteries in plug-electric vehicles pose an exceptional fire hazard. The research looked at whether the high-voltage batteries can cause fires when they are being charged, and when the vehicles are involved in an accident.

The overall consequences for Li-ion batteries are expected to be less because of the much smaller amounts of flammable solvent released and burning in a catastrophic failure situation.

The Karma Revero is a premium plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan manufactured by Karma Automotive. It is a revamped version of the Fisker Karma car. The first of the new production, for model year 2017, was released in September 2016.

Launched in 2016 and based in Southern California, Fisker Inc. is the relaunch of the Fisker brand previously known as Fisker Automotive, which produced the Fisker Karma. Byton is a Chinese all-electric vehicle automotive brand established in 2017 and incorporated in Hong Kong, co-founded by former BMW and Nissan Motor executives. Byton unveiled its first concept car to the public in January 2018. The company is currently running a trial shop at its Nanjing headquarters where drivable prototypes are built. It plans to introduce its M-Byte SUV model first, with the start of production scheduled for late 2019. The SUV was expected go on sale in China end of 2019, followed by the U.S. and European markets in the second half of 2020.
