Flatiron builds infrastructure such as bridges, highways, railways, roads, tunnels, hydropower facilities, oil, gas and industrial infrastructure for the transportation, energy and water sectors, specializing in large-scale infrastructure projects. The company conducts projects through contracting methods such as design-build and public-private partnerships.
Named after the flatiron rock formations found near Boulder, Colorado, Flatiron was originally a small materials company. Flatiron Structures Company LLC was founded in 1972 as they expanded into heavy construction. In the late 1980s, the company conducted work along Interstate 70 (I-70) through the Glenwood Canyon Corridor in Colorado.
Flatiron opened two regional offices in California in the 1990s. In 1997, Flatiron worked on the first design-build bridge project in Maine, the Sagadahoc Bridge in Bath. [1] In 1998, Flatiron secured a contract for the Eastern Toll Road project. From 1999 to 2004, Flatiron worked on projects in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and the Carolinas, such as the Carolina Bays Parkway project. [2]
Flatiron was acquired by Royal BAM Group in 2002 and was briefly renamed HBG Flatiron (2002 - 2004) as a result. [3] BAM sold Flatiron to Germany based Hochtief in 2007 for $243 million. [4]
In 2005, Flatiron began working in Western Canada with their first public-private partnership project, the Park Bridge east of Golden, British Columbia. [5] Other projects during the 2000s include the Carquinez Bridge project in 2007, [6] the Port Mann Bridge/Highway 1 project in 2008, [7] the I-35 W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge in 2008, [8] and work in Utah in 2009.
Projects from the 2010s include Circle Drive in 2010, [9] the John James Audubon Bridge [10] over the Mississippi River, sections of the Anthony Henday Drive [11] project in Edmonton, Alberta, the Lake Champlain Bridge [12] connecting New York and Vermont and the Yadkin River Bridges in North Carolina. Flatiron has also worked on several contracts on the new eastern span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. [1] Flatiron has been part of a team that has bid on construction packages for the California High-Speed rail and won a contract that was announced on December 12, 2014.
Dragados/Flatiron/Shimmick submitted a bid of $1.23 billion to design and build the 65-mile stretch from the south end of Fresno to near the Tulare-Kings county line and was deemed the “apparent best value” bidder by the California High-Speed Rail Authority. [13]
As of 2013 Flatiron operated across the U.S. and Canada, with more than 2,000 employees and 12 regional offices. Flatiron also works in heavy civil construction in the northeast via E.E. Cruz and Company. The company is a subsidiary of Flatiron and Turner Construction. [14]
In 2011, Spain based ACS Group acquired controlling interest in Flatiron parent company Hochtief. [15]
On 30 July 2024, ACS and Hochtief announced that Dragados North America and Dragados Canada would be integrated with Flatiron. The new entity Flatiron Dragados would be held 61.8% by ACS and 38.2% by Hochtief. [16]
The Champlain Bridge was a steel truss cantilever bridge with approach viaducts constructed of prestressed concrete beams supporting a prestressed concrete deck paved with asphalt. Opened in 1962, the bridge crossed the Saint Lawrence River, connecting the Island of Montreal to its South Shore suburbs.
Alberta Provincial Highway No. 216, better known by its official name of Anthony Henday Drive, is a 78-kilometre (48 mi) freeway that encircles Edmonton, Alberta. It is a heavily travelled commuter and truck bypass route with the southwest quadrant serving as a portion of the CANAMEX Corridor that links Canada to the United States and Mexico. Henday is one of the busiest highways in Western Canada, carrying over 95,000 vehicles per day in 2022 at its busiest point near West Edmonton Mall. Rush hour congestion is common on the four-lane section in southwest Edmonton, where traffic levels have risen due to rapid suburban development. Work began in fall 2019 to widen this section to six lanes by the end of 2023.
Hochtief AG is a German construction company based in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Hochtief is Germany's largest construction company and operates globally, ranking as one of the largest general construction companies in the United States through its Turner subsidiary, and in Australia through a 90% shareholding in CIMIC Group. In 2010 it employed more than 70,000 employees across five corporate divisions. One of these, Hochtief Concessions, is a major airport operator. The others are involved with construction project planning, finance, construction and operation. Work done in 2010 was €23.23 billion, with more than 80% coming from operations outside Germany.

Founded in 1924, the company is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts. The company has performed work primarily in the New England area of America. In 2014, J.F. White Contracting Company was acquired by Dragados USA.
The John James Audubon Bridge, completed and opened in May 2011, is a Lower Mississippi River crossing between Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana parishes in south central Louisiana. The bridge has the second longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere at 1,583 ft (482 m), after Mexico's Baluarte Bridge with a 1,706 ft (520 m) span, and has a total length of 12,883 ft (3,927 m)—nearly three-and-a-half times longer than the Baluarte Bridge's 3,688 ft (1,124 m) total length. The Audubon Bridge replaces the ferry between the communities of New Roads and St. Francisville. The bridge also serves as the only bridge structure on the Mississippi River between Natchez, Mississippi and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The bridge conveys Louisiana Highway 10, which is in a concurrence there with the Zachary Taylor Parkway.
The Champlain Bridge was a 2,184-foot-long (666 m) vehicular bridge in the United States that traversed Lake Champlain between Crown Point, New York and Chimney Point, Vermont. It was opened to traffic in 1929 as a toll bridge; the tolls were removed in 1987. The bridge was closed due to safety concerns on October 16, 2009, and was taken down by explosive demolition on December 28, 2009. It was replaced by a new bridge which opened on November 7, 2011.

The Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge is a through arch bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas, that carries six lanes of U.S. Route 181 (US 181) and Texas State Highway 35 (SH 35) from downtown Corpus Christi to Rincon Point, known to locals as North Beach. The bridge crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel and handles nearly 26,000 vehicles daily. A new bridge called the New Harbor Bridge is under construction. When complete, it will allow larger ships to pass beneath, permit safer pedestrian transit, and reconfigure the highway interchange system in the surrounding community.

The Lake Champlain Bridge is a vehicular bridge traversing Lake Champlain between Crown Point, New York and Chimney Point, Vermont. It replaced an older bridge that was demolished in 2009. The bridge was designed and constructed during an aggressive two-year schedule to minimize the social and economic impact of the original bridge's demolition. It is the only fixed-link crossing of Lake Champlain/Champlain canal between US 4 in Whitehall, 42 miles (68 km) to the south and US 2 at Rouses Point, 85 miles (137 km) to the north.

The Harbor Bridge Project is the replacement of the existing through arch bridge that crosses the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, which serves the Port of Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas, with a modern cable-stayed bridge design. The route will connect with SH 286 at its southern terminus and US 181 on the north. Groundbreaking on construction took place on August 8, 2016 and was scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2020, but was extensively delayed due to engineering and design issues, and is tentatively planned to be completed in 2025.
Michael Martin OBE is a British bridge engineer. He grew up in Carlisle and studied at the Carlisle Technical College before achieving a degree in civil engineering from the University of Leeds. Martin began his career as a design engineer at Ove Arup & Partners and served as their representative during the construction of the Kessock Bridge. He thereafter joined the contractor Morrison and was their chief engineer for the construction of the Dornoch Firth and Kylesku Bridges. Under Martin's direction the company won some of the first Private Finance Initiative infrastructure contracts in the UK. He transferred to Anglian Water after that company purchased Morrison in 2000 and became their head of health and safety. After a brief early retirement he returned as a consultant for WS Atkins and to lead a £2.2 billion water infrastructure partnership programme. He returned from retirement for a second time to act as Galliford Try representative on the board of the company constructing the £1.4 billion Queensferry Crossing. In 2014 he was appointed project director for all companies in the contracting joint venture and oversaw the project's completion in 2017.
The Samuel-De Champlain Bridge, colloquially known as the Champlain Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge design by architect Poul Ove Jensen and built to replace the original Champlain Bridge over the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec, between Nuns' Island in the borough of Verdun in Montreal and the suburban city of Brossard on the South Shore. A second, connected bridge links Nuns' Island to the main Island of Montreal. It is the busiest bridge in the country with more cars flowing into it than any other bridge.
