The Former Tainan Weather Observatory (traditional Chinese :原台南測候所; simplified Chinese :原台南测候所; pinyin :Yuán Táinán Cèhòu Suǒ) is a former weather station in West Central District, Tainan, Taiwan. [1]

History

The weather station was built in 1897 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. For a very long time, the building had been remained unused. [2] The Tainan City Government designated it a municipal historic site in 1998, and it became a national historic site in 2003. It later opened as a museum, and was closed for six months to repair damage from the 2016 southern Taiwan earthquake. On 31 March 2019, it was reopened to the public. [3]

Architecture

The building has a round structure following three concentric circles with offices on the outside, tower access on the inside and a circular hallway running between them. The top of the tower contains the exterior instruments.

Transportation

The building is accessible within walking distance south west of Tainan Station of Taiwan Railways.

In addition to meteorology, the Central Weather Bureau also makes astronomical observations, reports on sea conditions, and conducts research into seismology and provides earthquake reports. The Central Weather Bureau is headquartered in Taipei City and is administered under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Hsu Tain-tsair Taiwanese politician

Hsu Tain-tsair is a Taiwanese politician who served as the mayor of Tainan City from 2001 to 2010. Born in Tainan County, Hsu got his PhD candidacy in economics in the United States, where he started participating in the independence movement of Taiwan. He was placed on the blacklist of Kuomintang and was not allowed to return to Taiwan until 1990.

1946 Hsinhua earthquake

The 1946 Hsinhua earthquake, also referred to as the 1946 Tainan earthquake was a magnitude 6.1 earthquake which hit Tainan County, Taiwan, on 5 December 1946, at 06:47. The quake claimed 74 lives and was the eighth deadliest earthquake in twentieth century Taiwan.

Shalun line

The Shalun Line is a branch line of the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) West Coast line in Tainan, Taiwan. It was built to link the Western Line to the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) Tainan Station, speeding up transit times between downtown Tainan and the THSR station, with services running from Nanke railway station or Tainan TRA station to Shalun Station, next to the THSR station. The line opened on January 2, 2011.
