Friesland Flyers

The Friesland Flyers is a ice hockey club located in Heerenveen, Netherlands. The highest playing team, who competes in the Eredivisie, the highest-level hockey division in the Netherlands, is a professional team. This team also competes for the Dutch Cup prior to the Eredivisie season. Home games are played in the icehockey arena of Thialf.

Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.

Heerenveen Place in Friesland, Netherlands

Heerenveen is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslan), in the north of the Netherlands. The town has gained international prominence in speed skating, for it has the fastest lowland speed skating rink in the world.

History

The Friesland Flyers were founded in 1967 and played their first season in the Eredivisie in 1971-72. The Flyers set the Eredivisie record for the most consecutive championships with 7 between 1976 and 1983.

Heerenveen is the smallest Dutch city currently represented in the Eredivisie (although the Belgian city of Herentals is smaller).

The highest played team has competed, for sponsorship reasons, under several names in the eredivisie. Since 2011 the club is named "Friesland Flyers" (a non-sponsorship name) to show they are not alone the club for the town Heerenveen, but also for whole Friesland.

Friesland, also historically known as Frisia, is a province of the Netherlands located in the northern part of the country. It is situated west of Groningen, northwest of Drenthe and Overijssel, north of Flevoland, northeast of North Holland, and south of the Wadden Sea. In 2015, the province had a population of 646,092 and a total area of 5,100 km2 (2,000 sq mi).

Founded on 21 October 1938, they were officially recognised by the National Federation on 18 January 1939. The Trappers were crowned Eredivisie champions for the first time in the 1946-47 season, adding another 14 National Dutch Championships, 15 Dutch National Cups and 3 German Oberliga Championships over the years. The Trappers have won more national championships than any other team.

Dirk "Dick" Hendricus Schoenaker is a retired football midfielder from the Netherlands, who represented his native country at the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, wearing the number three jersey.

Dick Decloe is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. A Memorial Cup winner, Decloe spent most of his playing career as a top scorer in the first German Bundesliga. Decloe played international for the Netherlands at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

Leo Donald Koopmans is a former Dutch international ice hockey forward. Koopmans played 15 seasons in the Eredivisie, becoming the league's top scorer for 1977-8. Michael "Mike" Nason is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and a former professional ice hockey player. He is currently serving as head coach of the Dutch team UNIS Flyers Heerenveen.

The BeNe League is the highest-level ice hockey league in Belgium and the Netherlands. The league was founded in 2015, following a merger between the Belgian Hockey League and the Dutch Eredivisie and thus became the top tier of the sport in both nations. In terms of league structure, the BeNe League is made up of 13 teams, 9 from the Netherlands and a further 4 from Belgium, and they all play in a single group. The league features a mix of Belgian, Dutch, European and overseas players.
