Frivilligt Drenge- og Pigeforbund (English: Voluntary Boy and Girl Association, FDF) is a Danish, Christian youth organisation with approximately 25,000 members as of 2009.
FDF's activities are in many ways similar to scouting organisations. However, there are some differences, including the fact that in FDF children are always led by adults, and that FDF is not a member of any international scouting associations. Instead, FDF is a member of Fimcap, European Fellowship and Global Fellowship.
The Frivilligt Drengeforbund (English: Voluntary Boy Association) was established by Holger Tornøe, a young architect and Sunday school teacher from Copenhagen, and Ludvig Valentiner. This organisation was founded on 27 October 1902 in Frederiksberg, and is Denmark's oldest uniformed youth association. Only boys could become members of Tornøe and Valentiner's Association. In 1952, the Frivilligt Pigeforbund (English: Voluntary Girl Association, FPF) was established with a similar structure and concept but which was instead for girls. In 1974 the two merged to form a joint youth organization open to both girls and boys. After the merger this association was called the FDF/FPF. In 1994, the name was simplified to FDF. [1]
Since 1926, the FDF has hosted its National Camp event every five years at FDF Outdoor Center Sletten. The camp lasts 10 days and all members from the age of nine can take part. In 2011, the event attracted about 13,000 participants and more than 500 international guests from FDF's partner organizations took part. [1]
FDF groups are divided by age divisions which are led by adult group leaders. The age divisions consist of the following groups:
Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement employing the Scout method, a program of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports. Another widely recognized movement characteristic is the Scout uniform, by intent hiding all differences of social standing in a country and encouraging equality, with neckerchief and campaign hat or comparable headwear. Distinctive uniform insignia include the fleur-de-lis and the trefoil, as well as merit badges and other patches.
A Scout is a child, usually 10–18 years of age, participating in the worldwide Scouting movement. Because of the large age and development span, many Scouting associations have split this age group into a junior and a senior section. Scouts are organized into troops averaging 20–30 Scouts under the guidance of one or more Scout Leaders or Scoutmasters. Troops subdivide into patrols of about 6–8 Scouts and engage in outdoor and special interest activities. Troops may affiliate with local, national, and international organizations. Some national Scouting associations have special interest programs such as Air Scouts, Sea Scouts, outdoor high adventure, Scouting bands, and rider Scouts.
Camp Fire, formerly Camp Fire USA and originally Camp Fire Girls of America, is a co-ed youth development organization. Camp Fire was the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. It is gender inclusive, and its programs emphasize camping and other outdoor activities.
The Boys' Brigade (BB) is an international interdenominational Christian youth organisation, conceived by the Scottish businessman Sir William Alexander Smith to combine drill and fun activities with Christian values. Following its inception in Glasgow in 1883 the BB quickly spread across the United Kingdom, becoming a worldwide organisation by the early 1890s. As of 2018, the Boys' Brigade claimed 750,000 members in 60 countries.
A Girl Guide or Girl Scout is a member of a section of some Guiding organisations who is between the ages of 10 and 14. Age limits are different in each organisation. The term Girl Scout is used in the United States and several East Asian countries. The two terms are used synonymously within this article.
The Baden-Powell Scouts' Association (B-PSA) is a worldwide youth organisation originating in the United Kingdom, with friendly relationships with similar traditional scouting organisations in various countries. Baden-Powell Scouting focuses on the importance of tradition in the scout movement.
Cub Scouting is part of the Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), available to boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade, or 5 to 10 years of age and their families. Its membership is the largest of the five main BSA divisions. Cub Scouting is part of the worldwide Scouting movement and aims to promote character development, citizenship training, personal fitness, and leadership.
The Norwegian Guide and Scout Association is a Norwegian Scouting and Guiding association founded in its present form in 1978, when the Norwegian Boy Scout Organization and the Norwegian Girl Guide Organization merged.
Scouts Australia is a trading name of The Scout Association of Australia, which is the largest scouting organisation in Australia, with an estimated 55,038 youth participants in 2021, and a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. It was formed in 1958 and incorporated in 1967. It operates personal development programs for children and young adults from 5 to 25 years of age with programs successively opened to girls after 1971.
Outdoor education is organized learning that takes place in the outdoors. Outdoor education programs sometimes involve residential or journey wilderness-based experiences in which students participate in a variety of adventurous challenges and outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, canoeing, ropes courses and group games. Outdoor education draws upon the philosophy, theory, and practices of experiential education and environmental education.
Venturer or Venture Scouts are programs in some Scouting organisations for young people of various age ranges in the 14–20 age range. A participant in the program is called a Venturer.
The Afghanistan National Scout Organization was officially founded in 1931 in Afghanistan by a royal decree. The site of Robert Baden-Powell's second posting in 1880, Afghanistan was a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1932 until the Afghan government dissolved the Scout Association in 1947. Afghan Scouting was formed again from 1964 to 1978 and recognized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
The Scout and Guide movement in Denmark consists of about ten different associations. Most of them are members of two large federations, but there are also some independent organizations. Affiliated to Danish Scouting and Guiding are the organizations in Greenland, on the Faroe Islands and in Southern Schleswig.
Scouting and Guiding in India have a long history.
Scouting and Guiding in the United Kingdom is served by several different organisations:
The FIMCAP, which is short for Fédération Internationale des Mouvements Catholiques d’Action Paroissiale, is an umbrella organization for Catholic youth organizations. Its 31 member organizations are based in 28 countries. The FIMCAP was founded in 1962 and is recognised as an official Catholic organization by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. FIMCAP is also a full member of the European Youth Forum.
Youth organizations in the United States are of many different types. The largest is the government run 4-H program, followed by the federally chartered but private Scouting movement groups: the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). Another somewhat smaller but co-ed Scouting derived group is Camp Fire. Other youth groups are religious youth ministries such as the evangelical Christian Awana, Seventh-day Adventist Pathfinders, and Assemblies of God Royal Rangers.
There are many national organisations in the United Kingdom that have been established to provide services to people under the age of 18.

The FDF National Camp, formerly also called Julsølejr, is a nationwide youth camp organized by the Danish Christian youth organization FDF every five years at the FDF Outdoor Center Sletten near Julsø. With more than 10,000 participants, it is one of the biggest children and youth camps in Denmark.
