GNL Zamba, born Ernest Nsimbi, (29 January 1986) is a Ugandan hip hop artist who is credited with bringing rap and Lugaflow, a style of music to mainstream radio and other media in Uganda. [1]

Contents

His stage name, GNL, is short for "Greatness with No Limits". [2] He is the founder and CEO of the independent hip hop record label Baboon Forest Entertainment, [3] which nurtures new talent in Kampala, Uganda. He is also an actor, filmmaker, and ambassador for Ugandan brands and social initiatives. [4] [5]

Early life and education

GNL was born on 29 January 1986 in Mukono. His father was an electrical technician and his mother worked for Uganda Transport Company. The family later moved to Kawempe, in Kampala [3] after the Ugandan Civil War. [6] in his secondary school, he was chairman of junior literature club, member of the debating team and head writer of the Kiira Mirror [6] .

He later joined Makerere University where he graduated with honours with Bachelors in Environmental Management. [6]

Career

2005–2010

In 2005, GNL started his journey in the entertainment industry in Uganda [7] when he was part of the Hip Hop Canvas which was a project organised by Platinum Entertainment's Shadrak Kuteesa, [6] aiming to empower the youth to express themselves. [8] In this project he, together with other artists recorded the award winning song, Mother Africa. [6]

In 2007, he made his debut in the Ugandan musical scene with the song, Soda Jinjale, which is a play on the drink, Soda & Ginger Ale. The song propelled GNL from an underground emcee to a renowned Hip Hop artist bringing a new sound to the genre, that he called Lugaflow (Luganda Flow) [9] .

In February 2009, he performed at the WAPI British Council Initiative and later that month at the Sauti Za Busara in Zanzibar. In April, he performed at the Selam International Music Festival in Ethiopia. In June, GNL performed at the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony in Rwanda [6] and in August, he performed his first concert with the release of his album, Koyi Koyi, comprising eight number one singles [6] which was praised for bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary sound. [10] In September, GNL performed at the Dubai Concerts in the United Arab Emirates and in October, he performed at the Stratford Rex, East London in the United Kingdom. [6]

In September 2010, he performed at the 'We Love Africa Music Festival' in Denmark.

2011–2020

In November 2011, GNL returned to United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Concerts [6] and also performed at the 23rd UNAA convention. [11]

In September 2012, he performed at the Selam African Music Festival in Sweden and at GNL Zamba Live in Norway. [6]

In April 2014, GNL had VIP concerts in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town in South Africa. [6]

GNL then relocated to United States [12]

In April 2016, GNL got his first acting career role alongside Darren Lee Campbell [13] [14]

GNL became one of the radio hosts of Coke Studio Radio Hour, which was a program that was part of Coke Studio Africa in August 2017. [15]

In June 2019, his works were nominated at the 17th Independent Music Awards in New York City. These were Best Debut Album (Nsimbi), Best World Beat Song (Leo Ni Leo), Best Narrative Music Video (Dunia Ni Matenbezi) and Best Spoken Word ( Acholi Boy). [16] Leo Ni Leo won the Best World Beat song. [17]

In February 2020, he held a lecture in the history of Hip Hop to the music students of Kyambogo University. [18] In July of the same year, GNL, through his record label, Baboon Forest Entertainment, created the "Dear Hip Hop" challenge whose objective was to empower youth through the arts. The eventual winner was Ivan Kaweesa. [19]

2021–present

In February 2021, GNL returned to Uganda from the USA [20] and in December, he performed in the third edition of the online Tusker Malt Conversessions. [21]

Music style

GNL provides his lyrics in both Luganda and English. He sings in urban Ugandan hip hop style called Lugaflow. [22] [2] Lugaflow is rap in Luganda, the indigenous language in Uganda's Central Region. Since the late 2000s, Lugaflow has inspired a new generation of Ugandan rappers to create popular music in their native language.

His musical style was influenced by poets Gil Scott-Heron and Mbuli, Afrocentric musical artists like Eddy Grant and Fela Kuti and hiphop stars like Jay-Z, Nas and Ice Cube. [23]

Social campaigns

GNL participated in Friend A Gorilla, an Oxfam-sponsored campaign about environmental education with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. [24] His song "Story ya Luka" was selected by the Uganda Ministry of Health to headline a 2010 AIDS youth education campaign. [25]

His video collaboration for "True Manhood" with Young Empowered And Healthy (YEAH) [26] Uganda encouraged Ugandan youth to use condoms, and it won the People's Choice Digital Media Award at the 2011 International Entertainment Education Conference. [27]

Over a three-year period, GNL worked with Buzz Teenies to tour Ugandan schools, offering youth mentorship, encouraging social unity and staying in school. [28]

Since 2013, GNL has partnered with Reach A Hand Foundation Uganda to participate in a series of youth edutainment campaigns. [29]

In 2014, the Twaweza Initiative awarded GNL for the positive social impact of his song "We Cry", which speaks about street violence and safe sex. [30] He has been invited to lecture at Makerere University's College of Humanities on oral literature and ethnology. [31]

In June 2020, GNL together with his wife Miriam Tamar, joined the George Floyd protests in the USA. [32]

Personal life

Through the success of his music career, GNL was able to open a sports bar and bought land around Uganda. [33]

GNL Zamba wedded his wife, on 29 April 2018 at Cielo Farms Vineyard, Malibu, California. [34] Together with his wife, who is also a musical artist, they formed a musical group called Nsimbi. [35]

In 2020, Zamba and his wife decided to return to Uganda to settle. [34] he has a new born baby

Popularly known as "the guitar emperor", Aziz has graced the Ugandan and East African music charts with the songs 'Yegwe', 'Nkumila Omukwano', 'Nakupenda', 'Oxygen', 'Beera Nange', 'Nzikiriza', 'Pain Killer', and 'Yo Love', among others. Popular music promoter and veteran disc spinner DJ Erycom while appearing on a TV Show, he said that "Leero Monday" was the very first song composed and sung by Aziz Azion in the year 2007.

    Swangz Avenue is a Ugandan record label. It was established in 2008 by Ugandan musician and record producer Benon Mugumya.

    Fred Masagazi (1937–2009) was a Ugandan "Afrojazz" musician. He was the first Ugandan artist to have his song played on the BBC, with his song "Kolazizo", in 1963.

    Ragga Dee, born Daniel Kazibwe, is a Ugandan musician and politician. He contested for mayor of Kampala in the 2016 general elections. Currently, Ragga Dee serves as An Arts Administrator representing Art on the Private Sector Foundation Executive as well as Being Chairman National Culture Forum.

    Jeff Kintu, better known by his stage name Lyrical G, is a Ugandan rapper, songwriter, record producer, and vocalist. In 2016, he was named among MTV Base's best hip hop artistes from Uganda.

    Babaluku, born Silas Babaluku Balabyekkubo, is a Ugandan rapper, musician, producer, community youth activist and social entrepreneur who raps in Luganda. He is a member of the Bataka Squad. He is the founder of "the Bavubuka Foundation which equips the youth with leadership skills". He is one of the pioneers of "Lugaflow" which is rap music in Luganda. He was featured in a 2008 documentary "Diamonds in the Rough: A Ugandan Hip-hop Revolution" that covered his journey from his crew’s early days of performing in Uganda to performing in at festivals in the United States of America.

    St. Nelly-Sade, born Nsubuga Nelson, is a Ugandan Lugaflow rapper. He has performed on national and international stages including Bayimba International Festival of the Arts, LaBa! Arts Festival, Uganda Hip Hop Summit, as well as performances in South Sudan, Arusha, Tanzania and in various regions all over east Africa.

    I-Am Enygma, better known by his stage name Enygma, is a Ugandan rapper, record producer, executive producer and entrepreneur known for his wordplay laced rhymes and always wearing a mask on his face so as to conceal his identity. He rose to fame in December 2010 following the runaway success of his single, Hustler's Night featuring The mith, Keko and Navio. This was followed up by even more celebrated hits in 2011, namely F.U.M.E.M.E. and Ten Reasons. He also represents one third of occasional rap group Klarity alongside The Mith and Lyrikal Proof. Also frequently collaborates with other artists such as Ruyonga, Maurice Kirya and Lyrical G. As an entrepreneur, Enygma conducts private business, mostly outside of the entertainment industry.

    "Kaleke Kasome" is a song recorded at True Vine Studios in Makindye by music producer Didi March, officially released on 20 November 2005. Maurice Hasa composed and sang the song, about the pain, anger, and helplessness he felt due to the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in his neighborhood.

    Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Flex D'Paper was part of the 2014 UG Cypher including the finest Ugandan rappers: Navio, Keko, Big Tril, Don MC, AirporTaxi rappers St. Nelly Sade, GNL Zamba, DJ Global, JB, The Mith, Ruyonga, and Atlas.

    Hannington Muhumuza Wacha, also simply known as Producer Hannz or Hannz Tactiq, is a Ugandan hip hop and Dancehall producer and DJ. He is the CEO of Hannz Records located in Makindye, Kampala.     <i>Not for Sale</i> (mixtape) 2017 mixtape by Flex DPaper

    Not for Sale is the first solo mixtape by Ugandan recording artist and record producer Flex D'Paper. A follow-up to Eviction Notice mixtape by Rapaholix in 2012 that had songs from Flex and fellow members. Not For Sale was released on 27 June 2017 by his imprint Rapaholix Music on the TheTribe Ug website, a popular hip hop platform online in Uganda.
