Gambier Islands Group Marine Park is a marine protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in state coastal waters around the Gambier Islands at the mouth of Spencer Gulf. [1]

Marine protected areas (MPA) are protected areas of seas, oceans, estuaries or large lakes. These marine areas can come in many forms ranging from wildlife refuges to research facilities. MPAs restrict human activity for a conservation purpose, typically to protect natural or cultural resources. Such marine resources are protected by local, state, territorial, native, regional, national, or international authorities and differ substantially among and between nations. This variation includes different limitations on development, fishing practices, fishing seasons and catch limits, moorings and bans on removing or disrupting marine life. In some situations, MPAs also provide revenue for countries, potentially equal to the income that they would have if they were to grant companies permissions to fish.

South Australia is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It covers some of the most arid parts of the country. With a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth-largest of Australia's states and territories by area, and fifth largest by population. It has a total of 1.7 million people, and its population is the second most highly centralised in Australia, after Western Australia, with more than 77 percent of South Australians living in the capital, Adelaide, or its environs. Other population centres in the state are relatively small; Mount Gambier, the second largest centre, has a population of 28,684.

Gambier Islands (South Australia)

The Gambier Islands are a small group of islands lying between the southern tips of the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas at the entrance to Spencer Gulf in South Australia. The islands lie within the 120 km2 Gambier Islands Group Marine Park.

The marine park was established on 29 January 2009 by proclamation under the Marine Parks Act 2007. [2]

The Gambier Islands Group Marine Park consists of the waters around all parts of the island group to a distance of 1.6 nautical miles (3.0 km; 1.8 mi) from ‘median high water’ and overlaps both the crown land on the south-west side of Wedge Island and the Gambier Islands Conservation Park which includes the islands known as North Island, East Peaked Rocks, West Peak Rocks and South West Rock. Gambier Islands Conservation Park Protected area in South Australia

Gambier Islands Conservation Park is a protected area associated with the Gambier Islands Group which is located in the middle of the mouth of Spencer Gulf in South Australia about 71 kilometres south east of Port Lincoln. The conservation park consists of the following islands from within the group - North Island, South West Rock and Peaked Rocks. Wedge Island is not included in the conservation park. The land which now comprises the conservation park was previously declared as Fauna Reserves in March 1967 under the Fauna Conservation Act 1964 and was re-proclaimed in 1972 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. The area under protection is considered significant for the following reasons: 'a group of small islands utilised by seabirds and the Australian sea lion' and the 'North Island supports a population of the southern bush rat .' The conservation park is classified as an IUCN Category Ia protected area.

While the Marine Parks Act 2007 has provision for a marine park to be divided into a number of zone to ensure varying degrees of “protection for habitats and biodiversity” and varying levels of “ecologically sustainable development and use”, the whole extent of the Gambier Islands Group Marine Park has been placed in one zone, being “habitat protection” where “activities and uses that do not harm habitats or the functioning of ecosystems” are only permitted. As of 2016, the marine park was classified as IUCN Category IV protected area. [4] [3]
