His career started in the early 1980s, his musical foundations were set in electronic music, post-punk and reggae. [1] [2]
Gaudi began his musical journey in 1981 as a keyboardist for underground bands like Wild Planet, Red Light, Violet Eves, and Bamboo Company, collaborating with The Gang (on the album Barricada Rumble Beat) and Disciplinatha (on the album Abbiamo pazientato 40 anni, ora basta). He went on to found Raptus -one of the first Italian-language hip‑hop acts- and co-created the production team Tubi Forti, known for their work with Isola Posse All Stars (Stop al panico), Sud Sound System (Fuecu) and Donatella Rettore (Zan Zan Zan). Under various aliases —including National Rare Groove, Dr Muff & Crazy Stuff, 4t Thieves, and Etnotechno—, Tubi Forti released a series of 12-inch singles. Notably, the Etnotechno project marked Gaudi’s initial exploration into blending world music with electronic elements. In 1987, under the pseudonym Lele Gaudì, he launched what became Italy’s first entirely Italian‑language raggamuffin album [3] . Signed to Polygram/Universal, he recorded his first single Malinconico Love in Jamaica and at London’s Jah Tubby’s Studio featuring Crucial Robbie on the B-side. His debut album Basta Poco, released on January 6, 1991, earned him the “Best New Coming Act 1991” award in Italy. His second single 1990 Anni Fa sparked controversy -being banned by media in Vatican City due to its sensitive lyrical content- and despite -or perhaps because of this-, the single saw a strong commercial performance. Gaudi further cemented his reputation by collaborating with socially engaged Italian singers Ricky Gianco on the single Anche un vagabondo and Francesco Baccini on the single Lei sta con te. Drawing on his diverse musical influences, Gaudi began to incorporate the Theremin into his compositions, integrating its distinctive sound into dub and psychedelic music. This experimental phase led to the release of several singles under the pseudonym Dub Alchemist, showcasing his continued evolution as an artist and producer.
In 1995, Gaudi relocated to London, where he began working on his album Earthbound and produced several remixes, including Jus Come, Terra Terra Remix by Cool Jack, co-produced with DJ Angelino, which reached number one on the UK Dance Chart. This marked the beginning of his career as a recognized producer and remixer in the UK. In the following years, Gaudi worked with various artists including Mansun —whose track Taxloss he remixed reached no.14 on the UK Singles Chart— Mazzy Star, Cast, Peter Andre, Afrika Bambaataa, Rebbie Jackson, Jeanie Tracy, Kinobe and others. He produced and composed the concept album Sound of Anatomy under the alias Ultraviolet Zero, released on his Sub Signal Records label. He also composed for major broadcasters including BBC, Channel 4, RAI, ITV and MTV, contributing music to the 1998 MTV Europe Music Awards and releasing the single Cadillac Kitsch as Mad Master Moog. Gaudi collaborated with Italian singer Elisa on several songs, including A Little Over Zero and a remix of Gift, featured on her album Asile’s World, which sold over 230,000 copies and reached no.5 on the Italian Albums Chart. Elisa later appeared on Gaudi’s album No Prisoners. He also worked with Irene Grandi, writing songs including Lasciala Andare, which remained at no.2 in the Italian chart for 16 weeks and became a hit in Greece with a cover by Eleonora Zouganeli. His theremin performances led to collaborations with Ornella Vanoni ft Delta V and Grandmaster Flash featuring KRS-One. He also formed Orchestral World Groove with DJ Pathaan, releasing many originals and remixes and performing internationally. In 2003, he remixed tracks by Bob Marley, Simple Minds and worked on Jim Kerr’s solo project Pascal Life. He also composed for several films, including Dreams of Glory, Cuore Scatenato and the stage production My Beautiful Laundrette by Hanif Kureishi. Together with French musician Michel Moglia, Gaudi created Elemental, a live show for theremin and Moglia’s “Fire Organ”, which debuted at the Colosseum in Rome to a crowd of 350,000. He also collaborated with composer Massimo Nunzi on a symphonic-jazz adaptation of The Tempest by William Shakespeare, performed with a 20-piece orchestra including notable Italian jazz musicians. His 2004 solo album Bass, Sweat & Tears released by Interchill Records, became the label’s best-selling release, reaching no.2 on the iTunes European Chart and no.32 in the U.S., with tracks featured in Bollywood films such as Rog, Fareb and the award-winning Let It Ride. Subsequent releases included GAUDI:TESTA 1105 (also known as CONTINUUM) with Antonio Testa, which reached no.3 on the iTunes European Chart and Re:sonate, a collaboration with German producer Pete Namlook. He also contributed to Sounds From The Ground‘s track Palmprint and produced the album Walkin’ Target by Ashtech, featuring vocals by Leftfield’s Cheshire Cat.
In 2007, Gaudi released the compilation Sub Signals Vol.1 and collaborated with Dennis Bovell and Lee “Scratch” Perry at Livingston Studio in London on new versions of three classic Bob Marley tracks: Kaya, Sun Is Shining and Punky Reggae Party. That same year he also worked with Horace Andy, Almamegretta and released his critically acclaimed solo album Dub Qawwali featuring Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The album reached No.2 on the iTunes U.S. chart and No.1 in Amazon’s electronic music section, earning a nomination at the 2008 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. Gaudi gained national exposure in Italy as a vocal coach on the first three seasons of The X Factor, winning the first season with Aram Quartet. He later coached The Bastard Sons of Dioniso, whose Gaudi-produced single L’amor Carnale reached No.1 in the Italian charts and received a gold disc. He returned for a third season coaching Yavanna, who finished in third place. His 2010 album No Prisoners, released by Six Degrees Records, featured collaborations with Michael Franti, Elisa, Dr. Israel and Dub Gabriel. In 2011 he formed the project SCREEN with The Orb’s Alex Paterson and vocalist Chester Taylor, releasing the debut album We Are Screen! through Malicious Damage Records. His 2013 album In Between Times, also released on Six Degrees Records, included contributions from Michael Rose, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Twilight Circus, Raja Ram and author Gregory Sams. In the following years, he collaborated with Hollie Cook, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Soom T, Barrington Levy and Youth (of Killing Joke). With Youth, Gaudi released the EP 2063: A Dub Odyssey followed by their collaborative album Astronaut Alchemists and contributed to The Orb’s album No Sounds Are Out of Bounds. After signing with RareNoiseRecords, he released the experimental EP Electronic Impromptu in E-flat Minor featuring Bill Laswell, Roger Eno and members of Porcupine Tree and Japan, followed by his solo albums Magnetic (2017) and Epic Circuit (with Deep Forest). Later releases included the 7” vinyl Theremin in Hand / Theremin Memoir on Dubmission Records and the collaborative single Blue Monday (a New Order cover) with Dub Pistols and Dubmatix, which charted no.1 on iTunes Reggae and Beatport.
