Samajwadi Party candidate Rakesh Pratap Singh won in 2017 defeating Indian National Congress candidate Mohammad Nayem by a margin of 26,419 votes. [1] On 31 October 2021, Singh resigned from the 17th Uttar Pradesh Assembly citing "non-fulfilment of promises" by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government. [2]

Before July 2010, Gauriganj was part of Sultanpur district and then taking Gauriganj, Amethi, Jais, Jagdispur and Salon, formed a new district called Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar, later named Gauriganj and now Amethi. Gauriganj is connected with State Highway 34 and National Highway 128.

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Uttar Pradesh from 10 February to 7 March 2022 in seven phases to elect all 403 members for the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 10 March 2022.
