Genghis Tron is an American cybergrind band formed in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States, and latterly based in Brooklyn, New York and San Francisco, California. [4] The band signed to Relapse Records after releasing two recordings on Crucial Blast. [5] The group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2010, but returned in 2020 and soon after announced a new album, Dream Weapon , which was released in March 2021.
Genghis Tron formed in 2004 in Poughkeepsie, New York. Around the time of the band's formation, vocalist Mookie Singerman sang and played guitar in the two-piece project Glitter Pals with his friend Jake Friedman while they were attending Vassar College. Friedman also featured on the song "Laser Bitch" from Genghis Tron's Cloak of Love EP (2005).
Genghis Tron has toured with such bands as Behold... the Arctopus, [6] Converge, Kylesa, Gaza, The Dillinger Escape Plan and The Faint.[ citation needed ]
In 2008, the group released an album, Board Up the House . [7] It was named a "Critic's Choice" by The New York Times [8] and was awarded the title of "Album of the Year" by the magazine Rock Sound . [9]
In late 2010, the band members decided to take a break away from Genghis Tron, but assured fans in a Myspace message that they would return with new material when they started playing together again. [10] [11] The band was inactive for a decade and did not release or reissue any material during this time.
On August 10, 2020, Genghis Tron announced that they had returned from their hiatus and began recording their third album with Kurt Ballou. [12] This return also saw the addition of drummer Nick Yacyshyn, who is the band's first drummer due to the band using a drum machine for previous releases. Founder and vocalist Mookie Singerman did not rejoin the band and was replaced by Tony Wolski. [13]
In January 2021, the band announced their third album, Dream Weapon , would be released on March 26. [14] The album marks a shift in the group's previously heavy sound, leaning towards a "more meditative, hypnotic, and maybe psychedelic" direction. The record is completely devoid of blast beats and screamed vocals. [15]
The band is noted for its creative combination of various types of metal and electronic music. [16] Although often classified as cybergrind early in their career, Genghis Tron developed a more diverse sound, which included elements of IDM, doom metal, electronic and ambient, [1] in addition to their core style of synth-laden metal. [17]
Genghis Tron utilizes computer-based sequencers such as FL Studio and Ableton Live, as well as multiple synthesizers (Moog, Alesis and Novation) to produce its distinct sound.[ citation needed ] The band was innitially a three-piece, forgoing both a drummer and a bass guitarist. Upon returning, Genghis Tron became a four-piece and has since featured a human drummer.

Alchemist was an Australian progressive metal band from Canberra whose style combined death metal, progressive rock, psychedelic, Eastern, Aboriginal and electronic influences. The band formed in 1987 and released six studio albums, an EP and a compilation album. Work began on a new EP in 2010 but the band went on an indefinite hiatus and then split up. They are the only group to appear at every Metal for the Brain festival, an event they ran and organised from 1996. Alchemist also played at the Big Day Out and toured Europe several times.
Pig Destroyer is an American grindcore band formed in 1997 in Alexandria, Virginia. The band was formed by vocalist J.R. Hayes, guitarist Scott Hull, and drummer John Evans. Pig Destroyer is one of the most well-known grindcore bands due to Hayes's poetic lyrics; Hull's incorporation of thrash, punk, and doom influences in songwriting; and technical drum work.
Relapse Records is an American independent record label based in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Matthew F. Jacobson in 1990. The label features many grindcore, death metal, metalcore and sludge metal artists.
Trouble is an American doom metal band from Aurora, Illinois, formed in 1978. They are often considered one of the pioneers of doom metal, and have been referred to as one of the genre's "big four" alongside Candlemass, Pentagram and Saint Vitus. The band created a distinct style, taking influences of the British heavy metal bands Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and psychedelic rock of the 1960s.
High on Fire is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California, that was formed in 1998. Matt Pike, the band's frontman and founder, also plays guitar for Sleep. High on Fire won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance with their song "Electric Messiah". The band has released nine studio albums, with their newest, Cometh the Storm, released in 2024.
The Red Chord is an American deathcore band from Revere, Massachusetts, formed in 1999. The group comprises vocalist Guy Kozowyk, guitarist/vocalist Mike "Gunface" McKenzie, bassist Greg Weeks and drummer Jon Rice. The band gained a fanbase with its 2002 debut album Fused Together in Revolving Doors. The second album, Clients, was released in 2005 and sold over 50,000 copies in the U.S. They released their third album, Prey for Eyes in 2007, which sold between 4,000 and 5,000 copies and debuted at No. 198 on the Billboard 200 chart. Horse the Band is an American metalcore band from Lake Forest, California, who are best known for their 8-bit video game-influenced sound combined with metalcore. Frontman Nathan Winneke once jokingly described their sound as "Nintendocore", although the band have gone to lengths to distance themselves from the label, reiterating that this merely describes the sound, not the substance.
Pentagram is an American doom metal band from Alexandria, Virginia, noted as one of the pioneers of heavy metal, and the sub-genre of doom metal in particular. As such, they are considered one of the "big four of doom metal," alongside Candlemass, Saint Vitus, and Trouble.
Dead Mountain Mouth is the debut full-length album by Genghis Tron. It was released on June 6, 2006, on Crucial Blast in CD format, and on June 27, 2006, on Lovepump United in vinyl format. A vinyl reissue of the album was released in late 2008, again on Lovepump United.
Kylesa is an American sludge metal band that was formed in Savannah, Georgia. Their music incorporates experimentalism with heavy riffs, drop-tuned guitars and elements of psychedelic rock. The group was established in 2001 by the former members of Damad, with the addition of guitar player Laura Pleasants who is from North Carolina.
Glitter Pals was an American two-piece band formed in 2004 by then-Vassar College students Mookie Singerman and Jake Friedman, their name taking inspiration from the glitter that would remain on their sweat-drenched bodies after their intense lovemaking sessions in their 'glitter box'. Singerman is the vocalist for Philadelphia cybergrind band Genghis Tron. The two members are also the owners/founders of the independent record label Lovepump United, which released their debut EP, Unleash the Compassion in July 2005. The EP was recorded by New York City producer Martin Bisi.

Board Up the House is the second full-length album by the experimental metal band Genghis Tron. The album was recorded and mixed at Godcity Studio from August 29 to September 21, 2007, in Salem, Massachusetts, by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. It was mastered at New Alliance East by Nick Zampiello. The album was released on February 19, 2008, by Relapse Records on CD and on March 25 by Lovepump United on vinyl.
The Armed are an anonymous American hardcore punk musical collective, formed in Detroit, Michigan in 2009. Although no official members of the group are known for absolute certain, the collective has been represented in the media by advertising creative and director Tony Wolski – formerly known as Adam Vallely. The project often features guest collaborators on their releases, which have included musicians such as Chris Pennie, Nick Yacyshyn, Ben Koller, Troy Van Leeuwen, and Urian Hackney. Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou has also been involved in the recording and production of most of their releases.
Nintendocore is a broadly defined style of music that most commonly fuses chiptune with various hardcore punk and/or heavy metal subgenres, most often metalcore and post-hardcore. The genre is sometimes considered a direct subgenre of post-hardcore and a fusion genre between metalcore and chiptune. The genre originated in the early 2000s and peaked around the late 2000s with bands like Horse the Band, Karate High School and Sky Eats Airplane pioneering the genre.
Sumac is an American/Canadian post-metal supergroup that formed in 2014. It features the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), Seattle, Washington-based Brian Cook and Vashon, Washington-based Aaron Turner. Sumac released its debut album The Deal through Profound Lore Records in 2015.
Windhand is an American doom metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 2008. Currently signed to Relapse Records, Windhand released their most recent album, Eternal Return, in October 2018.
Dream Weapon is the third studio album by American experimental metal band Genghis Tron, released on March 26, 2021. The album is the band's first studio album since 2008's Board Up the House and the first with vocalist Tony Wolski and drummer Nick Yacyshyn, marking the first time the band has ever used a drummer.
