Geoffrey Richard Gollop,OBE [4] [5] (born 23 February 1955) [5] is a British Conservative politician,the deputy mayor of Bristol,the former lord mayor of Bristol,and the former deputy lord mayor of Bristol. He was the Conservative candidate for the first directly elected mayor of Bristol in 2012. [6]
Gollop was born at Bristol Maternity Hospital and has lived his entire life in Bristol,having been brought up in Henbury,where he attended Blaise Primary School. [5] He then attended Clifton College,and after that went up to Fitzwilliam College,Cambridge. Thereafter he trained in accounting,became a Chartered Accountant and worked in accounting firms,before being made redundant and setting up his own business. [7] Geoff Gollop &Co merged with accounting firm Milsted Langdon in 2013,with Gollop joining the latter as a director. [8]
Gollop is married to Bernice and has two children,Mark and Hermione. He is a Methodist and supports Bristol Rovers F.C. and Bristol City F.C. [7] His other interests include musical theatre and travel. [5] He joined the Conservative Party in 1973. He is a former school governor of Henbury School and Henleaze Junior School,and a former church warden of St Mary's Church,Henbury. [5]
In November 2011,Gollop was the victim of an arson attack on his car,for which the Informal Anarchist Federation claimed responsibility. [9]
Gollop was inspired to enter local politics by the issue of secondary education [10] and by his father Philip,a former Councillor for the Henbury ward, [11] and he has been a Conservative Councillor on Bristol City Council since June 2001,representing the Westbury-on-Trym ward. [3]
In 2011,Gollop was appointed the lord mayor of Bristol, [12] and in 2012 he was appointed the deputy lord mayor of Bristol. On 7 August 2012,he was selected to be the Conservative candidate for the first directly elected mayor of Bristol,having defeated former three-time lord mayor and Bristol City Council's Conservative group leader,Peter Abraham,and former councillor,Barbara Lewis. Receiving support from the mayor of London,Boris Johnson, [13] Gollop campaigned on transport,education,inequality and Council culture. [14] His specific policies included a freeze or reduction in Council Tax,lower fares on public transport,and business rates relief for independent shops. [15] In the election on 15 November,Gollop lost to independent candidate George Ferguson,coming third,with 9.13% of the first-preference votes,behind Ferguson and the Labour Party candidate Marvin Rees. Gollop attributed the result to "a real disillusionment with party politics". [16] After the election,Mayor Ferguson appointed Gollop as the deputy mayor of Bristol,and as the cabinet member with responsibility for finance and corporate services. [17]
Frank Gordon Dobson was a British Labour Party politician. As Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St. Pancras from 1979 to 2015,he served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Health from 1997 to 1999,and was official Labour Party candidate for Mayor of London in 2000,though finishing third in the election behind Conservative Steven Norris and the winner,Labour-turned-Independent Ken Livingstone. Dobson stood down at the 2015 general election.

A former member of the Conservative Party,Barnes served as the Leader of the Conservatives on the London Assembly from 2007 to 2008,and was the Member of the London Assembly (AM) for Ealing and Hillingdon from 2000 to 2012,when he lost his seat to Labour. On 30 September 2014,Barnes defected to the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

The Leicester South by-election was held to elect a Member of Parliament (MP) of the United Kingdom for the Leicester South constituency on 5 May 2011. It was prompted by the resignation of Sir Peter Soulsby of the Labour Party,who stood down from Parliament to contest the election for Mayor of Leicester. Soulsby was appointed Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on 1 April 2011,and the writ for a new election was issued on 5 April. The election was won by Labour Party candidate Jon Ashworth.
The 2012 police and crime commissioner elections were polls held in most police areas in England and Wales on Thursday 15 November. The direct election of police and crime commissioners (PCCs) was originally scheduled for May 2012 but was postponed in order to secure the passage of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 through the House of Lords. The government considers the elected commissioners to have a stronger mandate than the "unelected and invisible police authorities that they replace". The Mayor of Bristol is the head of government of Bristol and the chief executive of the Bristol City Council. The Mayor is a directly elected politician who,along with the 70 members of Bristol City Council,is responsible for the strategic government of the city of Bristol,England. The role was created after a local referendum held on 3 May 2012,which followed the passage of the Localism Act 2011. 41,032 voted for an elected mayor and 35,880 voted against,with a turnout of 24%. An election for the new post was held on 15 November 2012.
The inaugural Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayoral election was held on 4 May 2017 to elect the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The supplementary vote system was used to elect the mayor for a four-year term of office. Subsequent elections will be held in May 2021 and every four years after.
The 2021 West of England mayoral election was held on 6 May 2021 to elect the mayor of the West of England,on the same day as other local elections across the country. It was the second election for the role. The mayor was elected by the supplementary vote system.

The 2018 City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Bradford District Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections. One councillor was elected in each ward for a four-year term so the councillors elected in 2018 last stood for election in 2014. Each ward is represented by three councillors,the election of which is staggered,so only one third of the councillors were elected in this election. Before the election there was a Labour majority and afterwards Labour had increased their majority.
The 2021 Bristol City Council election took place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Bristol City Council in England. It coincided with nationwide local elections. Voters in the city also voted for the mayor of Bristol,the mayor of West of England and for Avon and Somerset's police and crime commissioner. The election was originally due to take place in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 Plymouth City Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect members of Plymouth City Council in England. It coincided with local elections across the United Kingdom. The Conservative Party made gains in the previous election in 2021,resulting in the council entering no overall control with no party holding a majority of seats. Immediately following the results of the 2022 election,the council remained in no overall control. Labour and the Conservatives gained seats from independent councillors who had left their parties,and exchanged seats with each other. The election saw the first Green Party councillor for the city elected,Ian Poyser,and the first trans councillor for the city elected,Dylan Tippetts of the Labour Party.
