Geoffrey William Cook (born 9 February 1936) is a former English cricketer who played mainly for Cambridge University. He was born in Beckenham in Kent [1] and attended Dulwich College before going up to Queens' College,Cambridge in 1955. [2] [3] He later became an Honorary Life Patron of the Queens' College Cricket Club. [3]
Cook played Second XI cricket for Kent from 1954 to 1959,appearing in both the Minor Counties Championship and the Second XI Championship for the team. [4] He made his first-class cricket debut for Cambridge against Sussex at Fenner's in May 1956 before going on to play 37 times for the University between 1956 and 1958,winning a cricket Blue and playing in two University matches. In the 1957 University Match he batted in a partnership with Gamini Goonesena worth 289 runs for the seventh wicket with Cook scoring 111 runs. This set a record for the highest partnership for any wicket by either side in University Matches and the record partnership in first-class cricket for the seventh wicket at Lord's,both records which still stand as of April 2017. Cook made four First XI appearances for Kent in the 1957 County Championship and,after he had completed his degree,also turned out in first-class cricket for Free Foresters and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).His final first-class appearance was in 1961,playing for LC Stevens XI against his old University having appeared in a total of 47 first-class matches. [1] [4] Between 1967 and 1970 he made seven appearances for Berkshire in the Minor Counties Championship. [4]

A club representing the county was first founded in 1842 but Kent teams have played top-class cricket since the early 18th century,and the club has always held first-class status. Samuel Moses James Woods was an Australian sportsman who represented both Australia and England at Test cricket,and appeared thirteen times for England at rugby union,including five times as captain. He also played at county level in England at both soccer and hockey. At cricket—his primary sport—he played over four hundred first-class matches in a twenty-four-year career. The majority of these matches were for his county side,Somerset,whom he captained from 1894 to 1906. A. A. Thomson described him thus:"Sammy ... radiated such elemental force in hard hitting,fast bowling and electrical fielding that he might have been the forerunner of Sir Learie Constantine."
Lionel Charles Hamilton Palairet was an English amateur cricketer who played for Somerset and Oxford University. A graceful right-handed batsman,he was selected to play Test cricket for England twice in 1902. Contemporaries judged Palairet to have one of the most attractive batting styles of the period. His obituary in The Times described him as "the most beautiful batsman of all time". An unwillingness to tour during the English winter limited Palairet's Test appearances;contemporaries believed he deserved more Test caps.
Arthur Fielder was an English professional cricketer who played as a fast bowler for Kent County Cricket Club and the England cricket team from 1900 to 1914. He played a major role in Kent's four County Championship wins in the years before World War I and toured Australia twice with the England team making six Test match appearances. He was chosen as one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1907.
Herbert Tremenheere Hewett was an English amateur first-class cricketer who played for Somerset,captaining the county from 1889 to 1893,as well as Oxford University and the Marylebone Cricket Club. A battling left-handed opening batsman,Hewett could post a large score in a short time against even the best bowlers. Capable of hitting the ball powerfully,he combined an excellent eye with an unorthodox style to be regarded at his peak as one of England's finest batsmen.
Arthur Percival Day was an English amateur cricketer who played for Kent County Cricket Club during the period of the county's greatest success in the County Championship before World War I. He played in all four of Kent's Championship winning sides in the pre-war period and scored over 7,000 first-class runs. He was chosen as one of the Cricketers of the Year in 1910.
Gamini Goonesena,born in Colombo,was a first-class cricketer from Ceylon who played prior to his country being granted Test status. A gifted allrounder who was a right-handed batsman and a legbreak and googly bowler,he played first class cricket over a 19-year timespan,1949–1968,representing 14 different teams.
Grahame Selvey Clinton is a former English professional cricketer. He was an opening batsman who played for Kent County Cricket Club from 1974 to 1978 and for Surrey County Cricket Club from 1979 to 1990.
Roger Henry Charles Human was an English first-class cricketer who played 59 matches in the 1930s. He mainly played for Cambridge University and then Worcestershire,but also appeared once each for the Gentlemen and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Human also played minor counties cricket for Berkshire and (once) Oxfordshire. He gained Blues at both cricket and football.
William Geoffrey Lowndes Frith Lowndes,known as Geoffrey Lowndes,was an English first-class cricketer. He played first-class cricket from 1921 to 1936,the majority of which was for Hampshire. He succeeded Lord Tennyson as Hampshire captain in 1934,holding the captaincy for two seasons.
Vernon Tickell Hill (1871–1932) was a Welsh cricketer who made 140 first-class appearances for Somerset and Oxford University between 1891 and 1912. Hill twice toured the United States of America,first as a member of F Mitchell's XI,and then as a member of PF Warner's XI.
Samuel Hulme Day was an amateur sportsman who played first-class cricket for Kent County Cricket Club and association football for Corinthian F.C. He made three international appearances for the England football team as an inside forward.
Robert John Morris was a Welsh cricketer. He played for Cambridge University and Kent County Cricket Club,making a total of 22 appearances in first-class cricket matches between 1949 and 1951.
Harry William Podmore is an English professional cricketer who plays for Glamorgan County Cricket Club. A right-arm medium-fast bowler who bats right-handed,he played youth cricket for Middlesex and made his debut for the county in 2014 before spending time on loan with Glamorgan,Durham and Derbyshire over the next two seasons. He made his first-class cricket debut on 1 May 2016 in the 2016 County Championship and played for Kent between 2018 and 2022;he was awarded his county cap in 2019 and left the county at the end of the 2022 season,moving to Glamorgan.
