Lieutenant General Sir George Pemberton Ross Norton, KCVO , CBE (born 27 November 1962) is a retired British Army officer. He was the UK Military Representative to NATO from 2016 to 2020, and has served as the Commandant of the Royal College of Defence Studies since 2020.
After being educated at Radley College and St John's College, Cambridge, [3] Norton studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards on 1 July 1984. [4] Promoted to captain on 27 November 1987, [5] he attended the Military Academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg in 1993, [3] before being promoted to major on 30 September 1994. [6]
Norton was deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina as Military Assistant to the Chief of Staff within Headquarters Implementation Force (IFOR) in 1997, [3] for which he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1998 New Year Honours. [7] Promoted to lieutenant colonel on 30 June 2000, [8] he joined the directing staff at the Joint Services Command and Staff College that year, [3] and then became commanding officer of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards in 2002. [3] Promoted to colonel on 30 June 2004, [9] he was deployed to Afghanistan as Director Plans and Policy within the Combined Forces Command Afghanistan. [3]
Norton was appointed Secretary of the Chiefs of Staff Committee at the Ministry of Defence in 2005 and attended the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Staff College, [10] [3] before being deployed to Afghanistan again in early 2007 as Deputy Commander of Task Force Helmand and being advanced to Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services there. [11]
Promoted to brigadier on 30 June 2007, [12] Norton went on to be commander of the 38th (Irish) Brigade in Northern Ireland in June 2007, [13] [14] and commander of British troops there in January 2009, [15] before being made Deputy Regional Commander in Helmand Province in early 2010. [16]
Promoted to major general on 8 July 2011, [17] Norton became General Officer Commanding London District and Major-General commanding the Household Division on the same date. [18] He became regimental lieutenant colonel of the Grenadier Guards on 10 June 2012. [19] He was present at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June 2012, [20] and the London Olympics in August 2012. [21]
Norton was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order on 25 June 2013, [22] following an audience with Queen Elizabeth II. [23] Serving in Northern Italy, he went on to be Deputy Commander NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy in Solbiate Olona in July 2013. [3] [23] He became the UK Military Representative to NATO on 20 May 2016, [24] [25] and to the European Union in July 2016. [26] Norton retired from the British Army on 16 June 2020. [27]
Norton became Commandant Royal College of Defence Studies on 21 July 2020. [28] On 20 August 2021, he was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower of London. [29]

Field Marshal Sir Nigel Thomas Bagnall, was a career British Army officer who served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army of the Rhine, from 1983 to 1985, and then as Chief of the General Staff (CGS), the professional head of the British Army, from 1985 to 1988. Early in his military career he saw action during the Palestine Emergency, the Malayan Emergency, the Cyprus Emergency and the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation, and later in his career he provided advice to the British Government on the future role of Britain's nuclear weapons.
Field Marshal Peter Anthony Inge, Baron Inge, was a senior British Army officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, from 1992 to 1994 and then served as Chief of the Defence Staff before retiring in 1997. Early in his military career he saw action during the Malayan Emergency and Operation Banner in Northern Ireland, and later in his career he provided advice to the British Government during the Bosnian War.
Field Marshal Charles Ronald Llewelyn Guthrie, Baron Guthrie of Craigiebank, is a retired senior officer of the British Army who served as Chief of the General Staff from 1994 to 1997 and Chief of the Defence Staff from 1997 until his retirement in 2001.
Field Marshal Richard Frederick Vincent, Baron Vincent of Coleshill, was a British Army officer. After serving with British Army of the Rhine he served with the Commonwealth Brigade in Malaysia during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. He commanded the 12th Light Air Defence Regiment in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, for which he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and later commanded the 19th Airportable Brigade. Although he never served as one of the individual service heads, he went on to be Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff in the late 1980s and then Chief of the Defence Staff in the aftermath of the Gulf War. He subsequently became Chair of the Military Committee of NATO in the mid-1990s.
General David Julian Richards, Baron Richards of Herstmonceux, is a retired senior British Army officer and Peer who was formerly the Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces. He succeeded Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup in this role on 29 October 2010.
General Francis Richard Dannatt, Baron Dannatt, is a retired senior British Army officer and member of the House of Lords. He was Chief of the General Staff from 2006 to 2009.
Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, is a retired Royal Navy officer. After serving as a submarine commander, he commanded a frigate and then commanded an aircraft carrier on operational patrol off Sierra Leone. He went on to be Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and then Commander-in-Chief Fleet. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval staff, the professional head of the Royal Navy, from July 2009 to April 2013. In this role he advised the British Government on the deployment of naval forces during operations around Libya. He was succeeded by Admiral Sir George Zambellas in April 2013.
General Sir David William Fraser, was a senior British Army officer who served as Commandant of the Royal College of Defence Studies from 1978 until his retirement from military service in 1980. He was also a prolific author, publishing over 20 books mostly focused on the history of the Second World War.
