Gerda: A Flame in Winter is an adventure role-playing game developed by PortaPlay and published by Don't Nod. It was released on 1 September 2022 for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

The player controls nurse Gerda Larsen and selects dialogue choices that affecting her relations with the four factions, Occupation, Resistance, Danes and Germans.

Plot

Set in Tinglev (Southern Jutland, Denmark) during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II in 1945. Gerda is Danish-German, with a German father and a Danish mother, and lives with her husband Anders. During the game, Gerda finds Anders has been arrested by the Gestapo and has left behind documents from the resistance movement.

Development and release

The game was developed by Danish developer PortaPlay and published by Don't Nod as their first third-party game. [1] It was announced at the Nintendo Indie World Showcase in December 2021. [2] The release on 1 September for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch was announced in May 2022. [3] Creative director Hans von Knut Skovfoged said the game is inspired by his grandmother smuggling weapons for the resistance. [4] A downloadable content (DLC), Liva's Story, was released on 23 May 2023. [note 1] [5]

Reception

Politiken praised the balance between boring and meaningful storytelling, but criticized the 3D models quality. [6] Le Monde praised the narrative choices and criticized the mechanics. [7] The Escapist said the game isn't notably visually appealing but the "RPG-lite" elements added a "sense of urgency" and strategy to decisions. [8]

At the Games for Change Awards 2023, it won Best Narrative and was nominated for Most Significant Impact.

At the Danish Game Awards Spilprisen 2023, it won Best Narrative.

Don't Starve is a survival game developed by Klei Entertainment. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux on April 23, 2013. A PlayStation 4 port, renamed Don't Starve: Giant Edition, became available the following year. Don't Starve for iOS, renamed Don't Starve: Pocket Edition was released on July 9, 2015. An Android version was released on October 20, 2016. Downloadable content titled Reign of Giants was released on April 30, 2014, and a multiplayer standalone expansion called Don't Starve Together became free for existing users on June 3, 2015. On Steam, this game is able to be purchased with a free copy for a friend. A Nintendo Switch port came out on April 12, 2018.

Don't Nod Entertainment SA is a French video game developer and publisher based in Paris. Founded in June 2008, it started development on Remember Me (2013). Because of its poor return on investment, Don't Nod entered "judicial reorganisation" in 2013. With the help of French agency funding, it developed Life Is Strange, whose successful release raised Don't Nod's industry status. It began third-party publishing with Gerda: A Flame in Winter in 2022.

The Escapists is a strategy game played from a top-down perspective. The game was developed by Mouldy Toof Studios and following a Steam Early Access release in 2014, was released in 2015 for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Xenoblade Chronicles is a series of action role-playing games developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo. The series began with the original Xenoblade Chronicles game, published for the Wii in 2010 in Japan, and released in Europe and Oceania the following year. Nintendo originally had no plans for a North American release, but after a fan campaign named Operation Rainfall showed sufficient interest, the game was eventually released in the region in 2012. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Railway Empire is a railroad construction and management simulation game developed by Gaming Minds Studio and published by Kalypso Media. It was released on 26 January 2018 for Linux and Microsoft Windows, 30 January 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and 14 February 2020 for Nintendo Switch. Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is a 2021 survival horror video game developed by Steel Wool Studios and ScottGames. It is the ninth main installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's series and the eleventh game overall. Arcade Paradise is a business simulation video game developed by Nosebleed Interactive and published by Wired Productions. It was released August 11, 2022 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S and October 13, 2022, for Amazon Luna and Google Stadia. The player character grows a struggling laundromat business into a thriving arcade. It received mixed to generally favorable reviews from critics. Metacritic aggregate scores range from 72 out of 100 for Windows to 83 out of 100 for Switch.
