Tinglev (German : Tingleff) is a town with a population of 2,738 (1 January 2023) [1] in Aabenraa Municipality in Region of Southern Denmark on the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. Tinglev is a base for German minority institutions in Southern Jutland, the minority Schleswig Party receiving 18.0% of the town's vote in the municipal elections of 2021. [2]

From 1866 until 1920, Tinglev was part of the Prussian Province of Schleswig-Holstein, and formed a part of Imperial Germany. Notable figures born there include Hjalmar Schacht, a liberal economist who introduced a wide variety of schemes in Germany before and during The Third Reich in order to tackle the effects that the Great Depression had on that country, and was a key player in Nazi Germany's economic steps towards re-armament.

Tinglev Municipality

Until 1 January 2007, Tinglev was also a municipality (Danish: kommune ) in the former South Jutland County. The municipality covered an area of 326 km2 (126 sq mi), and has a total population of 10,148 (2005). Its last mayor was Susanne Beier, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party. The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

Tinglev municipality ceased to exist as the result of the Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It was merged with Bov, Lundtoft, Rødekro, and Aabenraa municipalities to form the new Aabenraa Municipality. This created a municipality with an area of 951 square kilometres (367 sq mi) and a total population of 60,151 (2005).

The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Aabenraa, which it shared with neighboring Aabenraa Municipality.

The Region of Southern Denmark is an administrative region of Denmark established on Monday 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, which abolished the traditional counties ("amter") and set up five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 271 before 1 January 2007 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favor of the local level and the central government in Copenhagen. The Region of Southern Denmark has 22 municipalities. The reform was implemented in Denmark on 1 January 2007, although the merger of the Funish municipalities of Ærøskøbing and Marstal, being a part of the reform, was given the go-ahead to be implemented on Sunday 1 January 2006, one year before the main reform. It borders Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) to the south and Central Denmark Region to the north and is connected to Region Zealand via the Great Belt Fixed Link.

Vejle Municipality is a municipality (kommune) in the Region of Southern Denmark on the Jutland peninsula in southeast Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 1,058.43 km2 (408.66 sq mi) (2013), and has a population of 120,949. Its mayor is Arne Sigtenbjerggaard, a member of the liberal party Venstre. The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Nørre Snede.

Vesthimmerland Municipality or Vesthimmerlands Municipality is a municipality in the North Jutland Region in Denmark. It covers an area of 768,08 km² (2013) and has a total population of 36,431 (2023). The Municipality borders Jammerbugt Municipality to the south and to the east it borders Rebild and Aalborg Municipality and to the south it borders Viborg Municipality and to the south-east it borders Mariagerfjord Municipality.

The Schleswig plebiscites were two plebiscites, organized according to section XII, articles 100 to 115 of the Treaty of Versailles of 28 June 1919, in order to determine the future border between Denmark and Germany through the former Duchy of Schleswig. The process was monitored by a commission with representatives from France, the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aabenraa County</span>

Aabenraa County is a former province in Denmark, located on the east-central region of Southern Jutland. Aabenraa County was established in 1920 following the reunification of Denmark and South Jutland following the Schleswig Plebiscites. It was dissolved in 1970 when it merged with three other counties to form South Jutland County. Aabenraa County corresponded geographically to the former Prussian Kreis Apenrade combined with the larger part of Bov Parish and Frøslev municipality. Both were transferred from Kreis Flensburg with the establishment of the current Danish-German border. Aabenraa County and Sønderborg County merged in 1932, forming Aabenraa-Sønderborg County.
