Ghosts on Tape is the sixth studio album by Brighton-based rock band Blood Red Shoes, released on 14 January 2022 in the UK and Europe via the band's label Jazz Life. Written and recorded in 2019, its release was postponed due to restrictions associated with the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Soon after the release of their previous album Get Tragic on 25 January 2019, the band started writing new songs for another studio album. Guitarist Laura-Mary Carter described the writing process: "It was all in one month, but it wasn't like we were working every day, so it was probably about two weeks, maybe three." [1]
Carter stated that when writing the lyrics: "We were listening to a lot of murder podcasts, and that's definitely come out on this record I think. Also because we were writing in the States and a lot of these crimes were based there, it all just sort of seeped onto the album somehow." [1]
Drummer Steven Ansell expressed his frustration with not being able to properly support an album during COVID-19 restrictions: "We'd made the record and then put it on pause because of lockdown and everything going bonkers, because we were thinking we can't release the record until we can tour it, then in the meantime we got really bored and restless so we just started writing."
Six more songs were written and recorded and eventually released on the Ø EP on 18 June 2021. Three songs from the album were made available digitally, "Morbid Fascination" on 28 October 2021, "I Am Not You" on 25 November 2021 and "Murder Me" on 6 January 2022.
Ghosts on Tape was released on CD, vinyl and digitally in Europe on 14 January 2022. Three hundred signed clear vinyl copies were sold exclusively via Rough Trade UK, cassettes were also available in the UK. [2]

Ghosts on Tape received generally positive reviews from critics. AnyDecentMusic?, which assigns a normalised rating based on a range of reviews from several sources, aggregated the album's average review score to 7.2 out of 10, based on six reviews. [3] Andy Von Pip from Under the Radar wrote that the band "have never sounded so vital" even after 17 years of playing together, [7] The Skinny 's Cheri Amour, however, noted "a surprising amount of solo songs". [6] Several critics praised the album's mixture of genres, At the Barrier's John Barlass calling it "a hugely successful mélange of pop, rock, grunge, punk and electronica". [8]

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1982, comprising vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante. Their music incorporates elements of alternative rock, funk, punk rock, hard rock, hip hop, and psychedelic rock. Their eclectic range has influenced genres such as funk metal, rap metal, rap rock, and nu metal. With over 120 million records sold worldwide, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the top-selling bands of all time. They hold the records for most number-one singles (15), most cumulative weeks at number one (91) and most top-ten songs (28) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. They have won three Grammy Awards, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and in 2022 received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Skinny Puppy was a Canadian electro-industrial band formed in Vancouver in 1982. The group was among the founders of the industrial rock and electro-industrial genres. Initially envisioned as an experimental side-project by cEvin Key while he was in the new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre. Over the course of 13 studio albums and many live tours, Key and Ogre were the only constant members. Other members have included Dwayne Goettel, Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, Bill Leeb, Mark Walk (2003–2023), and a number of guests, including Al Jourgensen (1989), Danny Carey (2004), and many others.
Kevin Graham Ogilvie, known professionally as Nivek Ogre, is a Canadian musician, performance artist and actor, best known for his work with the industrial music group Skinny Puppy, which he co-founded with cEvin Key. Since 1982, he has served as Skinny Puppy's primary lyricist and vocalist, occasionally providing instrumentation and samples. Ogre's charismatic personality, guttural vocals and use of costumes, props, and fake blood on stage helped widen Skinny Puppy's fanbase and has inspired numerous other musicians.
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is the third studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on September 29, 1987, by EMI Manhattan. Due to prior obligations resulting in temporary personnel changes following the band's formation in 1983, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan is the only studio album to feature all four founding members of the band on every track: vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. This is also the last album with Slovak before his death from a drug overdose in 1988, and the only full-length album to feature Irons. Blood Red Shoes are an English alternative rock duo from Brighton consisting of Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell. In Time To Voices is the third album by English rock band Blood Red Shoes, released on 26 March 2012 in the UK and Europe through V2 Records. The album was recorded and mixed in Autumn 2011 as a co-production with Mike Crossey, and was preceded by the singles "Cold" on 19 March 2012 and the title track "In Time to Voices" on 23 August 2012.
Weapon is the twelfth and final studio album by Canadian electro-industrial band Skinny Puppy. It was released on May 28, 2013, through Metropolis Records. Skinny Puppy received mainstream media attention when the band billed the U.S. government for using its music as torture in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, which was a primary source of inspiration for the album. Musically, Weapon's sound is reminiscent of Skinny Puppy's earliest releases, Remission (1984) and Bites (1985), due to the employment of old equipment and simplified songwriting.
Blood Red Shoes is the fourth album by Brighton-based rock band Blood Red Shoes, released on 3 March 2014 in the UK and Europe through Jazz Life Records. The album was recorded over a 6-month period in Berlin and was entirely self-produced and engineered by the band themselves. The first song from the album, "The Perfect Mess", was released on 1 December 2013, after 10 QR codes were found in different cities by the band's fans.
Meliora is the third studio album by Swedish rock band Ghost. The album was produced by Klas Åhlund and released on August 21, 2015. The album was generally well received, placing on several music publications' lists of the best heavy metal albums of the year and winning Best Hard Rock/Metal Album at the 2015 Grammis Awards.
