The country's participation at London marked its thirteenth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1960 Summer Olympics. The delegation sent by the Sammarinese National Olympic Committee consisted of four athletes:sprinter Martina Pretelli,archer Emanuele Guidi,trap shooter Alessandra Perilli and short-distance swimmer Clelia Tini.
Alessandra Perilli is a Sammarinese professional target shooter. Her hometown is Borgo Maggiore. She finished 4th after a draw for 2nd place with a French and a Slovakian shooter in the Women's trap at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She won San Marino's first ever Olympic medal,a bronze,in Women's Trap at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Nicola Selva is a Sammarinese politician and a retired sprinter. He was one of the Captains Regent,serving with Michele Muratori. He took office on 1 April 2019 and left on 1 October 2019.
San Marino competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020,the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021,because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the nation's fifteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics.

Manuel Ciavatta is a Sammarinese politician who was as one of two Captains Regent from 1 October 2022 until 1 April 2023. He served alongside Maria Luisa Berti.
