In his anthropological work, he discusses the importance of the modernity of nation states and globalization. He is the former University of Chicago professor of anthropology and South Asian Languages and Civilizations, Humanities Dean of the University of Chicago, director of the city center and globalization at Yale University, and the Education and Human Development Studies professor at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture.

It was founded in 1963 by Ronald Berndt: at the University of Western Australia and is sponsored by the Berndt Museum of Anthropology in Perth. In its early years of existence, it published widely on Aboriginal Australian issues, but has since developed to include anthropological studies of all cultural and geographical areas as well as on a wide range of theoretical issues.
