Gluck Peak ( 71°42′S72°41′W / 71.700°S 72.683°W ) is a rock peak, 335 metres (1,100 ft) high, located 6.5 nautical miles (12 km) south-southwest of Mount Borodin and immediately north of Alyabiev Glacier, lying between the bases of Bennett Dome and Shostakovich Peninsula on south side of the Beethoven Peninsula, southwest Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first mapped — from air photos taken by the 1947–48 Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition — by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Christoph Willibald von Gluck, the Austrian composer (1714-1787). [1]
Alexander Island, which is also known as Alexander I Island, Alexander I Land, Alexander Land, Alexander I Archipelago, and Zemlja Alexandra I, is the largest island of Antarctica. It lies in the Bellingshausen Sea west of Palmer Land, Antarctic Peninsula from which it is separated by Marguerite Bay and George VI Sound. The George VI Ice Shelf entirely fills George VI Sound and connects Alexander Island to Palmer Land. The island partly surrounds Wilkins Sound, which lies to its west. Alexander Island is about 390 kilometres (240 mi) long in a north–south direction, 80 kilometres (50 mi) wide in the north, and 240 kilometres (150 mi) wide in the south. Alexander Island is the second-largest uninhabited island in the world, after Devon Island.
Thurston Island is a largely ice-covered, glacially dissected island, 135 nautical miles long and 55 nautical miles wide, lying between Amundsen Sea and Bellingshausen Sea a short way off the northwest end of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. The island is separated from the mainland by Peacock Sound, which is occupied by the west portion of Abbot Ice Shelf.
The Beethoven Peninsula is a deeply indented, ice-covered peninsula, 60 miles (100 km) long in a northeast–southwest direction and 60 miles (100 km) wide at its broadest part, forming the southwest part of Alexander Island, which lies off the southwestern portion of the Antarctic Peninsula. The south side of the peninsula is supported by the Bach Ice Shelf whilst the north side of the peninsula is supported by the Wilkins Ice Shelf. The Mendelssohn Inlet, the Brahms Inlet and the Verdi Inlet apparently intrude into it. The Bach Ice Shelf, Rossini Point and Berlioz Point are some distance away, on the Ronne Entrance from the Southern Ocean. Beethoven Peninsula is one of the eight peninsulas of Alexander Island.
Kemp Peninsula is an irregular ice-covered peninsula 26 nautical miles long in a north–south direction and 5 to 12 nautical miles wide. The peninsula rises gently to 305 metres (1,001 ft) and projects east between the heads of Mason Inlet and Mossman Inlet, on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
The Mariner Glacier is a major glacier over 60 nautical miles long, descending southeast from the plateau of Victoria Land, Antarctica, between Mountaineer Range and Malta Plateau, and terminating at Lady Newnes Bay, Ross Sea, where it forms the floating Mariner Glacier Tongue.
Overton Peak is a peak in the Desko Mountains, rising to about 550 metres (1,800 ft) at the southeast end of Rothschild Island. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Commander Robert H. Overton, U.S. Coast Guard, Executive Officer, USCGC Westwind, U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze, 1971.
Andreaea Plateau is a small plateau with an average elevation of 180 metres (590 ft), located southwest of Robin Peak, Signy Island, in the South Orkney Islands. The feature is notable for the largest known stand in the Antarctic of the black-brown moss Andreaea.
Mount Borodin is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 695 metres (2,280 ft) high, with a rock outcrop on the east side, 7 nautical miles (13 km) north-northeast of Gluck Peak in the southwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. A number of peaks in this general vicinity first appear on the maps of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48. This peak, apparently one of these, was mapped from RARE air photos by Derek J.H. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Alexander Borodin, the Russian composer.
Broad Valley is a descriptive name for the broad glacier-filled valley on the south side of Laclavere Plateau, Trinity Peninsula, Antarctica. The name was suggested by V.I. Russell of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) following his survey in 1946.
Condor Peninsula is a mountainous, ice-covered peninsula, 30 nautical miles long and 10 to 15 nautical miles wide, between Odom Inlet and Hilton Inlet on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
Copland Peak is a peak 3 nautical miles (6 km) northeast of the Mussorgsky Peaks and about 1.2 miles (2 km) south of Mazza Point near the tip of Derocher Peninsula, in the north central area of Beethoven Peninsula, situated in southwest Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken 1967–68 and from Landsat imagery taken 1972–73. In association with names of composers in the area, it was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Aaron Copland, the American composer (1900–90).
Pesce Peninsula is a broad snow-covered peninsula lying between Rameau Inlet and Verdi Inlet on the north side of the Beethoven Peninsula, situated in the southwest portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Dykeman Point is the main and only headland on Pesce Peninsula marking the northern extremity of the peninsula. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, and mapped from these photographs by D. Searle of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1960. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Victor L. Pesce, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer, U.S. Navy Antarctic Development Squadron Six (VXE-6), from May 1980 to May 1981. Pesce Peninsula is one of the eight peninsulas of Alexander Island.
Mendelssohn Inlet is an ice-filled inlet, 25 nautical miles (46 km) long and 9 nautical miles (17 km) wide, situated between Derocher Peninsula and Eroica Peninsula on the north side of Beethoven Peninsula, in the southwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The inlet was first sighted from the air and roughly mapped by the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and was resighted and photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48. It was remapped from the RARE photos by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after German composer Felix Mendelssohn.
Hilton Inlet is an ice-filled inlet, 12 nautical miles wide, which recedes about 22 nautical miles west from its entrance between Cape Darlington and Cape Knowles, along the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica.
Mount Schumann is a mountain rising to about 600 m (1,969 ft) southwest of the head of Brahms Inlet on the Beethoven Peninsula and lies 2 mi (3 km) northeast of Chopin Hill in the southwest portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was first mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. This feature was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Robert Schumann (1810–56), a German composer.
Russell East Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles long and 3 nautical miles wide, which lies at the north end of Detroit Plateau and flows from Mount Canicula eastward into Prince Gustav Channel on the south side of Trinity Peninsula, Antarctica. This glacier together with Russell West Glacier, which flows westward into Bone Bay on the north side of Trinity Peninsula, form a through glacier across the north part of Antarctic Peninsula.
Reuning Glacier is a glacier situated on the north side of Beethoven Peninsula, lying within the southwest portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier flows in a northwest direction and joins Hushen Glacier in discharging into south Mendelssohn Inlet. The glacier was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from U.S. Navy aerial photographs taken 1967-68 and U.S. Landsat imagery taken 1972–73. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Winifred M. Reuning, Office of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation (NSF), Editor, Antarctic Journal of the United States, from 1980 to 2015.
Alyabiev Glacier is a glacier in Antarctica, flowing south from Gluck Peak into Boccherini Inlet and lies about 3 miles (5 km) West of Arensky Glacier on Beethoven Peninsula, Alexander Island, It was named by the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1987, after Alexander Alyabiev (1787-1851), the Russian composer.
