The Grand Prix de Ponce is an auto race held at the Ponce Speedway in the El Tuque sector of barrio Canas, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The yearly event started in 1993. [3] Before the construction of the Speedway, the race took place in the area of La Guancha in barrio Playa in Ponce. [4] The new speedway opened in 2003. [5]

History

The Grand Prix Marlboro de Ponce first started in 1993. The 60,000 fans attending provided the momentum to continue celebrating the races. [6]

Location

Today's Grand Prix de Ponce takes place in Ponce at El Tuque, a beach, speedway and marina complex just west of Ponce. The new speedway venue is called the Ponce International Speedway Park and opened in 2003. [7] It includes a drag-racing track and circuit track. [8]

Timoteo Luberza de San Martín was a nineteenth-century Puerto Rican engineer from Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was responsible for the 1875 Ponce water supply system, including the dam in Rio Portugues, and the Calle del Agua masonry arch aqueduct in barrio Portugues Urbano in Ponce. In 1864, he served briefly as mayor of the nearby town of Yauco. He is best remembered for designing Plaza del Mercado de Ponce.

Residencia Ermelindo Salazar is a historic house in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It was built in 1870 as the home of Ermelindo Salazar, a prominent citizen and businessman in the city as well as its mayor in 1880. It is located at 70 Cristina street in the Ponce Historic Zone, in Barrio Tercero, Ponce, Puerto Rico. Today the house serves as the headquarters of the Centro Cultural de Ponce Carmen Solá de Pereira, the cultural center of the city of Ponce, where it is used for educational and cultural activities as well as for art exhibits.

The Acueducto de Ponce, formally Acueducto Alfonso XII, is the name of a historic 2.5-mile gravity-based water supply system in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It was designed in 1875 by Timoteo Luberza and built the following years. This aqueduct was the first modern water distribution system built in Puerto Rico. The Aqueduct was known as El Puente de los Suicidios. It was declared a National Historic Monument on 17 June 2015.

The 2000 Rolex 24 at Daytona was a Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series 24-hour endurance sports car race held on February 5–6, 2000 at the Daytona International Speedway road course. The event was the first round of the inaugural Rolex Sports Car Series season. Victory overall and in the GTO class went to the No. 91 Viper Team Oreca Dodge Viper GTS-R piloted by Olivier Beretta, Karl Wendlinger, and Dominique Dupuy. Victory in the SR class went to the No. 20 Dyson Racing Riley & Scott Mk III piloted by James Weaver, Rob Dyson, Max Papis, and Elliott Forbes-Robinson. Victory in the GTU category went to the No. 56 Haberthur Racing Porsche 996 GT3-R piloted by Luca Drudi, Gabrio Rosa, Fabio Rosa, and Fabio Babini. Finally, the AGT class was won by the No. 84 Comer Racing, Inc. Chevrolet Camaro piloted by John Finger, Doug Mills, Richard Maugeri, Andy McNeil, and Ronald Zitza.

Pedro Rosalí was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 4 February 1874 until 5 May 1874.
