Gregory Allan Rusland (born 9 November 1959) is a Surinamese politician. He served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. In 2012 he became leader of the National Party of Suriname. Rusland has been a member of the National Assembly since 2015.
Rusland was born on 9 November 1959 in Paramaribo. [1] He studied agricultural production at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname and received a bachelor's degree in 1982. He continued his studies in the same field at the University of Florida and obtained an MSc in 1984. [2] Rusland obtained a further PhD at the same institute in 1987. He held several teaching positions at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname between 1987 and 2005. [1] [2] Between 1987 and 2000 Rusland also helped found several institutes at the university. He also went into business and amongst other ventures served as president-commissioner of a shrimp company. [3]
Rusland served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. [4] [5] In this period he received criticism for the low taxation rate that Canadian mining company Iamgold had to pay. [4] After the 2010 Surinamese general election Rusland was candidate for the Vice Presidency on behalf of the New Front for Democracy and Development next to presidential candidate Chan Santokhi. [6]
Since June 2012 Rusland is leader of the National Party of Suriname,taking over leadership from Ronald Venetiaan. [5] [7] He won the internal party election against Ivan Fernald,with Rusland winning seven out of eleven districts. [7]
In the 2015 Surinamese general election,Rusland was elected to the National Assembly for the electoral district of Paramaribo. [8] After the elections the National Assembly had to elect the President and Vice President of Suriname. Rusland once again served as candidate for vice president next to Chan Santokhi. [4]
In March 2020,during the COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname,Rusland expressed support for the government measures taken to suppress the pandemic. However,he was critical of the evening curfew,stating that it reminded him of the military government of the 1980s. [9] On 23 April 2020,after the public prosecutor had indicated that it wanted to prosecute Finance Minister Gillmore Hoefdraad for mismanagement at the Central Bank of Suriname,Rusland stated that Hoedraad should immediately offer his position to the President. [10] [11]
On 30 May 2020,five days after the 2020 Surinamese general election was held,and with the official results still pending,Rusland and the leaders of the Progressive Reform Party,General Liberation and Development Party and Pertjajah Luhur signed an agreement to form a coalition government. [12]
Rusland was once again elected to the National Assembly for Paramaribo District in the 2020 elections. [13] On 1 July 2020,Rusland tested COVID-19 positive. He had been tested,because Paul Somohardjo with whom he had lengthy meetings about the new government tested positive. [14] Rusland's wife was infected as well even though she had stayed at home for the last three weeks. [15]
In December 2020 he was re-elected as leader of the National Party of Suriname for a third time. [16] [17] [18]
In February 2023,the NPS under Rusland left the Santokhi cabinet,with the NPS stating that it had been hardly involved in government during the preceding two years. [19]
Rusland is married and has two children. [1] His father Harold Rusland was a union leader and served as Minister of Education and his brother Andy Rusland served as Minister of Finance. [2] [20] Rusland has stated he is oriented towards the United States and has a special link with Florida. [3]
DesiréDelano Bouterse is a Surinamese military officer,politician,convicted murderer and drug trafficker who served as President of Suriname from 2010 to 2020. From 1980 to 1987,he was Suriname's de facto leader after conducting a military coup and establishing a period of military rule. In 1987,Bouterse founded the National Democratic Party (NDP). On 25 May 2010,Bouterse's political alliance,the Megacombinatie,which included the NDP,won the parliamentary elections,and on 19 July 2010,Bouterse was elected as President of Suriname with 36 of 50 parliament votes. He was inaugurated on 12 August 2010.

The National Party of Suriname is a political party in Suriname,founded in 1946,and since June 2012 led by Gregory Rusland. For a long time it was the largest ruling party in the country,and it has been in government for a total of over 40 years. Of the 16 general elections held in Suriname,the party or a coalition it was a leading part of finished in first place 11 times. The party tends to be more popular among Afro-Surinamese and multiracial people.

The National Assembly is the Parliament,representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo,after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022.

Jennifer Geerlings-Simons is a Surinamese politician. On 30 June 2010,she was elected as Chairperson of the National Assembly of Suriname with 26 out of 50 votes. Simons is the second female chairman of the Surinamese Parliament. She was re-elected on 30 June 2015. She announced her retirement on 20 June 2020.
Jules Sedney was a Surinamese politician,and Prime Minister of Suriname from 20 November 1969 to 24 December 1973. In 1980,he became governor of the Central Bank of Suriname,but had to flee the country in 1983 after a dispute with Dési Bouterse. Sedney returned to Suriname in 1989.
Ronnie Brunswijk is a Surinamese politician,businessman,former rebel leader,footballer and convicted drug trafficker,who is serving as the current Vice President of Suriname.
Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi is a Surinamese politician and former police officer who is the 9th president of Suriname,since 2020. After winning the 2020 elections,Santokhi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname. On 13 July,Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election. He was inaugurated on 16 July.
Mohamed Rashied Doekhi is a Surinamese politician and a former district commissioner of Nickerie. Because of his popularity in the western rice district,he is nicknamed the president of Nickerie. He was a member of the National Assembly of Suriname,between 2000 and 2020 on behalf of the National Democratic Party of Dési Bouterse.
Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin is a Surinamese educator,politician,and was the Vice President of Suriname between 2015 and 2020. He is a member of the National Democratic Party. At the age of 35,he became the youngest vice president in the history of Suriname to lead the Council of Ministers. Adhin is a Hindu of Indian descent.
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname,as well as the COVID-19 crisis.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname was caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Suriname on 13 March 2020. The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020,one person died. On 3 May 2020,all nine cases had recovered. On 18 May,an eleventh case was identified.
Dewanchandrebhose Sharman is a Surinamese doctor and politician. He is a member of the National Assembly for the Progressive Reform Party (VHP). In 2015,he was first elected to the National Assembly by preferential votes. In 2020,Sharman was elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly in an uncontested election.
Caprino Alendy was a Surinamese politician and chairperson of Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) from 1987 until 2012. Alendy was vice chairperson of the National Assembly between 2005 and 2010.
Diplomatic relations between Suriname and Venezuela were established in November 1975,shortly after the independence of Suriname. Suriname has an embassy in Caracas since 1976. Venezuela has an embassy in Paramaribo. As of 30 June 1978,there is no travel visa requirement between the two countries.
Gillmore AndréHoefdraad is a Surinamese economist and politician. He was Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname from 2010 until 2015,and Ministry of Finance of Suriname from 2015 to 2020. In January 2020,it was reported that US$100 million was missing from the Central Bank. In July 2021,an Interpol red notice was issued for Hoefdraad. Hoefdraad was sentenced in absentia to 12 years imprisonment on 17 December 2021.
The Santokhi cabinet has governed Suriname since 16 July 2020. It was formed by President Chan Santokhi after the 2020 Surinamese general election.
