Anton de Kom University (Dutch : Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname) is the only university in Suriname. It is located in the capital, Paramaribo, and named for Anton de Kom, an anti-colonialist activist who was killed by the Nazis while in exile in the Netherlands.
Tertiary education in Suriname dates back to the 19th century. In 1882 there was already tertiary education provided at the Geneeskundige School and there also existed an organized juridical education (The Law-school), which was founded in the late forties. Furthermore, there were other para-university courses, namely the discipline to become a surveyor, dentist and pharmacist.
At the centenary of the Estates of Suriname in 1966, this organization took the important decision to cooperate with the government of Suriname to found a university. The proclamation was made on 1 November 1968, in the then still existing Theatre Star. Since then, the first of November is celebrated as Founders' Day.
Linguist Hein Eersel was appointed as the first chancellor of the University of Suriname. [3] The Faculty of Law opened first, and other faculties followed:
The university was closed from December 1982 until 17 October 1983, [6] when it was renamed after Anton de Kom. [7]

The University Board is the highest governing body of the University and has the entire responsibility of the organization. Prof. Dr. Jack Menke is the current president.
There are five research centers doing research within their specific fields, and also rendering services to the community. The following are research centers:
Foreign students who meet the relevant minimum requirements must master the Dutch language to be able to follow the classes. They may submit a petition to the Ministry of Education via the University Board.
Erasmus University Rotterdam is a public research university located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The university is named after Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, a 15th-century Christian humanist and theologian.
Cornelis Gerhard Anton de Kom was a Surinamese resistance fighter and anti-colonialist author. He was arrested in Suriname and the protest against his arrest resulted in two deaths. De Kom was subsequently exiled to the Netherlands where he wrote Wij slaven van Suriname, an anti-colonial book. During World War II, he joined the resistance, was arrested, and sent to concentration camps where he died. In 2020, de Kom was added as a subject on the Canon of the Netherlands, a chronological list of fifty key events and people in Dutch history to be taught in schools.
The education in Suriname was initially set up in analogy to the Dutch education system. In terms of structure, the education system is now a mixture of school types that were common in the Netherlands before, during and after the Mammoetwet. The language of instruction is Dutch; mainly Surinamese Dutch. The four exceptions to this rule are the International Academy of Suriname, administered by a local Christian foundation, Christian Liberty Academy, administered by the Caribbean Christian Ministries, and the AlphaMax Academy, a private nonsectarian school administered by the AlphaMax Foundation, and since 2011 Suriname International School, which provides k12 online school for high school students.
The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Associatie Kortrijk, or Kulak for short, is a university satellite campus of the KU Leuven in the city of Kortrijk (Courtrai) in the Belgian province of West Flanders and is therefore also officially a Dutch-speaking institution.

The TU Delft Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management is a faculty for graduation and post-graduation studies in Technology, Policy and Management of the Delft University of Technology. Through internationally oriented education and research the faculty want to contribute with "sustainable solutions to complex social problems". The research of the faculty focuses on "large scale socio-technical systems, such as infrastructures for transport, energy and telecommunication".
Evert Guillaume Gonesh is a Surinamese diplomat, politician, and writer of Indian descent. He served as the Surinamese Ambassador to the Netherlands.
The Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname or CELOS is an agricultural and forestry research institute established in Suriname in 1967. It was originally part of Wageningen University and Research. It is affiliated with the Anton de Kom University of Suriname (ADEK) and its Department of Agriculture of the Faculty of Technology.
Klaaskreek is a resort in Suriname, located in the Brokopondo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 2,124. Located northeast of Brokopondo, the main town is Reinsdorp. In 2007, a technical training centre in biological agriculture was established at Klaaskreek to teach locals about enhancing agriculture in the area.
Alice Amafo is a Surinamese politician and former government minister. She was the youngest Surinamese minister when first appointed at age 28 and the first Maroon woman. She became a minister again in 2010.
Gregory Allan Rusland is a Surinamese politician. He served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. In 2012 he became leader of the National Party of Suriname. Rusland has been a member of the National Assembly since 2015.
Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin is a Surinamese educator, politician, and was the Vice President of Suriname between 2015 and 2020. He is a member of the National Democratic Party. At the age of 35, he became the youngest vice president in the history of Suriname to lead the Council of Ministers. Adhin is a Hindu of Indian descent.
Diitabiki is a Ndyuka village in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. Diitabiki is the residence of the gaanman of the Ndyuka people, since 1950, and the location of the oracle.
Danielle Veira is a Surinamese Army colonel and public official.
Paramacca is a resort in Suriname, located in the Sipaliwini District. The population is estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 people. In 1983, the Sipaliwini District was created, and the eastern part became the resort of Tapanahony. The Paramacca resort is the northern part of Tapanahony, and mainly inhabited by the Paramaccan people, the border of the resorts is the island of Bofoo Tabiki in the Marowijne River.
Ida Does is a Surinamese-born, Dutch journalist, writer, and documentary filmmaker. After working at Omroep West as a reporter, editor-in-chief, and program director, she began making independent films, mainly focused on art, culture, colonialism, and social justice. Her documentaries have won awards in Canada, the Netherlands, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Mellisa Kavitadevi Santokhi-Seenacherry is a Surinamese lawyer, who is currently the First Lady of Suriname.
Marthelise Eersel is a Surinamese civil servant and physician. Previously the director of the Ministry of Health, she was director of the Suriname COVID-19 Crisis Management Team from July 2020 to May 2021.
The Geneeskundige School was a non-academic medical school in Paramaribo founded in 1882. It provided free education for medical students who were only allowed to practice in the Dutch West Indies, and had to work as a District doctor for six years. The school was dissolved in 1969.
