The Guelph Mercury Tribune, formerly known as the Royal Tribune and the Guelph Tribune, is a twice-weekly newspaper serving the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
The Guelph Tribune was founded on September 30, 1986 as the Royal Tribune, a once-a-week community newspaper. The paper was later[ when? ] renamed the Guelph Tribune and in 2016 as the Guelph Mercury Tribune after the closure of the daily Guelph Mercury in January 2016. [1] The newspaper published twice a week until 2018, when it went down to one publication per week. It focuses on local news. The Mercury Tribune has had five owners and eight publishers since it began. It employs carriers to deliver the paper and advertisements with it.
Torstar bought the newspaper from Southam in 2004 and it is now part of the Metroland Media Group which includes regional sister daily newspaper the Waterloo Region Record (Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo), as well as a group of weekly newspapers. The paper is distributed free of charge, and is supported through donation drives and advertisements. On April 28, 2016, the Tribune was renamed the Guelph Mercury Tribune. [2]

It was one of the oldest broadsheet newspapers in Ontario. Publication was discontinued in late January 2016.
The Mercury News is a morning daily newspaper published in San Jose, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is published by the Bay Area News Group, a subsidiary of Media News Group which in turn is controlled by Alden Global Capital, a vulture fund. As of March 2013, it was the fifth largest daily newspaper in the United States, with a daily circulation of 611,194. As of 2018, the paper has a circulation of 324,500 daily and 415,200 on Sundays. As of 2021, this further declined. The Bay Area News Group no longer reports its circulation, but rather "readership". For 2021, they reported a "readership" of 312,700 adults daily.
Torstar Corporation is a Canadian mass media company which primarily publishes news. In addition to the Toronto Star, its flagship and namesake, Torstar also publishes daily newspapers in Hamilton, Peterborough, Niagara Region, and Waterloo Region In addition to the Metroland Media Group and a minority position on Canadian Press. The corporation was initially established in 1958 to take over operations of the Star from the Atkinson Foundation after a provincial law banned charitable organizations from owning for-profit entities. From 1958 to 2020, the class A shares of Torstar were held by the families of the original Atkinson Foundation trustees. The private investment firm NordStar Capital LP, now owned by Jordan Bitove, acquired the company in 2020.
The Waterloo Region Record is the daily newspaper covering Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada, including the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, as well as the surrounding area. Since December 1998, the Record has been published by Metroland Media Group, a subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. On May 26, 2020, Torstar, agreed to be acquired by NordStar Capital, a private investment firm; the deal was expected to close by year end.
