Gursharan Kaur Kohli (born 13 September 1937)[ citation needed ] is an Indian history professor, author and spouse of the former prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
Kaur was the youngest of seven siblings born to Sardar Chattar Singh Kohli, [1] an engineer of Burmah-Shell, and Smt. Bhagwanti Kaur in Jalandhar on 13 September 1937 in British India. She has four sisters and two brothers. Her ancestral village was Dhakkam in Jhelum district, Punjab, Britsh India (now in Punjab, Pakistan).[ citation needed ]
Kaur is known in the Sikh community of Delhi for her kirtan singing, and has also appeared on Jalandhar Radio. [2]
Since Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister in 2004, she has accompanied him abroad on state visits. The family has largely stayed out of the limelight. Their three daughters – Upinder, Daman and Amrit, have successful, non-political careers. [3] Upinder Kaur is a professor of history at Delhi University. She has written six books, including Ancient Delhi (1999) and A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India (2008). [4] Daman Kaur is a graduate of St. Stephen's College, Delhi and Institute of Rural Management, Anand, Gujarat, and author of The Last Frontier: People and Forests in Mizoram and a novel Nine by Nine. Rajkumari Dame Bibiji Amrit Kaur DStJ was an Indian activist and politician. Surinder Kaur was an Indian singer and songwriter. While she mainly sang Punjabi folk songs, where she is credited for pioneering and popularising the genre, Kaur also recorded songs as a playback singer for Hindi films between 1948 and 1952. Preneet Kaur is an Indian politician who served in the Government of India as a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2014. She is married to Amarinder Singh, who was the 15th Chief Minister of Punjab. She joined the Congress party, to which her husband also belonged once, and contested parliamentary elections repeatedly from the Patiala constituency. In February 2023, she was suspended from the party for supporting BJP leader and her husband Amarinder Singh and campaigning for candidates of the BJP or BJP-allied parties. She won the elections of 1999, 2004 and 2009, but lost her seat in the elections of 2014 and made a comeback by winning again in 2019.
Harchand Singh Longowal was the President of the Akali Dal political party during the Punjab insurgency of the 1980s. He had signed the Punjab accord, also known as the Rajiv-Longowal Accord with Rajiv Gandhi on 24 July 1985. The government accepted most of the Akali Dal demands, who in turn agreed to withdraw their activism. Less than a month after signing the accord, Longowal was assassinated.
