HMS Cato was a 50-gun Grampus-class fourth rate ship of the Royal Navy. One of a class of ships constructed for service in the American Revolutionary War, Cato was commissioned in 1782. She became the flagship of Sir Hyde Parker, and sailed with him to the East Indies Station later in the year. After stopping at Rio de Janeiro on 12 December, the ship sailed for the Cape of Good Hope and was never seen again. Theories on her disappearance include her being shipwrecked in locations such as the Malabar Coast and the Maldives, and the crew being murdered by natives. Sir John Knox Laughton argues that it is more likely that Cato caught fire and blew up at sea.
In the American Revolutionary War the Royal Navy was in need of warships that were small enough to capably operate in the shallow waters around North America, but that were still large enough to provide effective firepower. The traditional two-decker ships of the line were too large to combat the smaller craft operated by the Continental Navy, while frigates were deemed too small and inappropriate to assist with expected amphibious operations. Instead the Royal Navy looked towards 44-gun fifth rates and 50-gun fourth rates, both of which were anomalous types of ships not large enough to join the line of battle but equally incapable of serving as a frigate would. These ships were however perfect for the war in America, and between 1775 and 1781 twenty-nine of them were ordered, of which ten were 50-gun fourth rates. [2]
By 1780 the extant fourth rates in Royal Navy service were becoming worn, and several had been lost in the years of war. The Surveyor of the Navy Edward Hunt thus provided a new design to assist in replacing these. He produced the Grampus class, which was a version of Sir John Williams' proven Portland class with an extended gun deck. [3] [4] The class copied the Portland armament, with eleven lower deck gunports and twelve on the upper deck, but also incorporated some features from Williams' Experiment class, which had been an attempt to produce a lighter and faster fourth rate design. As such the Grampus ships were not to have the traditional roundhouse, with a set of false stern lights in place to infer otherwise. [4] [5] Other new features included a more substantial bow that connected the forecastle all the way to the sternpost; this feature subsequently became standard in all frigates but was only used in other fourth rates from the start of the nineteenth century. [6]
Named after Cato the Elder, a Roman soldier and statesman, Cato was the second of two ships built to the Grampus design. [7] [1] Contracted to William Cleverley at Gravesend, Cato was ordered on 17 February 1780, laid down in June 1780 and launched on 29 May 1782 with the following dimensions: 147 feet 10 inches (45.1 m) along the gun deck, 121 feet 5 inches (37 m) at the keel, with a beam of 40 feet 8+3⁄4 inches (12.4 m) and a depth in the hold of 17 feet 9 inches (5.4 m). She measured 1,071 33⁄94 tons burthen. [1]
Despite what Hunt's design expected, Cato was given a full roundhouse and a true stern gallery during her construction. This was at odds with her sister ship HMS Grampus, which was built true to the design. [4] The addition of the roundhouse suggests that Cato was planned for use as a flagship, thus requiring the extra space. [8] However, this meant that the number of gunports on her quarterdeck were decreased from four a side to three. [1] Cato also received built-up bulwarks on her quarterdeck rather than the planned open rail design. [6]
Cato sailed from Gravesend to Woolwich Dockyard later in the month of her launch. By the time of her completion copper sheathing was becoming a standard inclusion on ships, and she was coppered between 1 June and 12 June. [9] She received her fitting out at the same time, and was completed on 10 October. [1] Her construction and fitting out cost a total of £28,037. [10] With a crew complement of 350, Cato was armed with twenty-two 24-pounder long guns on her lower deck, with twenty-two 12-pounder guns on her upper deck. On her quarterdeck were four 6-pounders, and a further two were on the forecastle. [1] A new establishment for carronades on 50-gun ships was created in July 1779, but it is not recorded whether Cato received these additions. [lower-alpha 1] [11]
Captain James Clarke commissioned Cato in May 1782. The ship sailed on 13 October for the East Indies Station, [lower-alpha 2] serving as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir Hyde Parker who was travelling to take up his position as commander-in-chief on the station. [lower-alpha 3] Cato was in company with the 14-gun sloop HMS Hound. [14] [15] They reached Madeira on 27 October and continued their journey on 1 November. [lower-alpha 4] [17]
Having reached South America, Cato left Rio de Janeiro on 12 December and soon disappeared. [1] [2] [18] Stores identified as belonging to Cato were later seen on vessels trading in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. [19] Several suggestions have been put forward as to what happened to Cato and her crew. Having passed the Cape of Good Hope she likely reached the Indian Ocean. Subsequent theories on her fate have included her being shipwrecked off South Arabia, the Malabar Coast, Madagascar, or the Maldives, in around January 1783. [20] [21] [18]
After Cato's disappearance a wreck was discovered near King's Island in the Maldives, and it was inspected by the East India Company in 1786 with the assumption that it was Cato. In 1805 a report was received from the captain of the country ship Fancy that described how the crew of the ship had been rescued, but after one attempted to rape a native girl, the entire crew had been tied together in pairs and thrown into a hole which was then filled in by the native population. In 1791 the English captain of a vessel belonging to Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot, reported that he had seen stores, including the mainsail, from Cato on a Malay boat at Mecca. The Malay on the boat stated that a large ship had wrecked some years earlier on the Malabar Coast. They believed that most of those aboard her had gotten safely ashore but that the Malay king there had most of them put to death immediately. [23] Theories continued to be proposed after this; on 1 November 1805 the East Indiaman Britannia and transport ship King George were wrecked on Rocas Atoll. While there they noted another shipwreck on the beach, and from its age they suggested that it was the wreck of Cato, however the location did not match Cato's route. [24]
Naval historian Sir John Knox Laughton, in his biography of Parker, discards all of the aforementioned theories, arguing that since none of the stories were able to provide any hard evidence of Cato or her crew's fate, it is more likely that the ship accidentally caught fire at sea and blew up. [18] Biographer John Charnock comes to the same conclusion. [12]
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a second-rate was a ship of the line which by the start of the 18th century mounted 90 to 98 guns on three gun decks; earlier 17th-century second rates had fewer guns and were originally two-deckers or had only partially armed third gun decks. A "second rate" was the second largest class of warships in a hierarchical system of six "ratings" based on size and firepower.

The rating system of the Royal Navy formally came to an end in the late 19th century by declaration of the Admiralty. The main cause behind this declaration focused on new types of gun, the introduction of steam propulsion and the use of iron and steel armour which made rating ships by the number of guns obsolete.
HMS Cornwall was a 74-gun third-rate Vengeur-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1810s. She spent most of her service in reserve and was converted into a reformatory and a school ship in her later years. The ship was broken up in 1875.
HMS St Lawrence was a 102-gun first-rate wooden warship of the Royal Navy that served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Built on the lake at the Royal Navy dockyard in Kingston, Ontario, she was the only Royal Navy ship of the line ever to be launched and operated entirely in fresh water. Constructed in 1814, the ship's arrival on the lake ended all naval action and St Lawrence finished the war having never gone into battle. Following the war, the vessel was laid up, eventually being sold in 1832 to private interests. The ship later sank and is now a recreational dive spot.
HMS Amazon, was a 36-gun Amazon-class frigate, built at Rotherhithe in 1795 to a design by Sir William Rule. Carrying a main battery of 18-pounder long guns, she was the first of a class of four frigates. She had a short but eventful career during the French Revolutionary War, which she spent in the Channel and Western Approaches, part of a frigate squadron under Sir Edward Pellew. She was wrecked in Audierne Bay in 1797, following an action on 13 January with the French ship-of-the-line, Droits de l'Homme.
The Minerva-class sailing frigates were a series of four ships built to a 1778 design by Sir Edward Hunt, which served in the Royal Navy during the latter decades of the eighteenth century.
HMS Gloucester was a 74-gun, third rate Vengeur-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1810s. She played a minor role in the Napoleonic Wars and was cut down into a 50-gun fourth rate frigate in 1831–32. The ship was converted into a receiving ship and broken up in 1884.
HMS Superb was a 80-gun second rate Vanguard-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s. She was broken up in 1869.
HMS Centurion was a 80-gun second rate Vanguard-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s.
HMS Lion was a 80-gun second rate Vanguard-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s. She was fitted with steam propulsion in 1858–1859. In 1871 Lion was converted into a training ship at HM Dockyard, Devonport. The ship was sold for scrap in 1905.
HMS Colossus was a 80-gun second rate Vanguard-class ship of the line built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s. The ship was fitted with steam propulsion in 1854–1855, and was sold for scrap in 1867.
Aréthuse was a 46-gun frigate of the French Navy. She served during the Napoleonic Wars, taking part in a major single-ship action. Much later the vessel took part in the conquest of Algeria, and ended her days as a coal depot in Brest, France.
The Cormorant class were built as a class of 16-gun ship sloops for the Royal Navy, although they were re-rated as 18-gun ships soon after completion.
HMS Banterer was a Royal Navy Banterer-class sixth-rate post-ship of 24 guns, built between 1805 and 1807 at South Shields, England. She was ordered in January 1805 as HMS Banter but her name was lengthened to Banterer on 9 August 1805.
HMS Chatham was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She had been planned as Royal-Hollandais for the French Navy, but was captured while under construction during the Walcheren Campaign.
HMS Jason was a 36-gun fifth-rate Penelope-class frigate, launched in 1800. She served the entirety of her career in the English Channel, mostly in the frigate squadron of Commodore Charles Cunningham. Serving off the coast of France, especially around Le Havre and Cherbourg, she captured several French privateers and recaptured a British merchant ship in a cutting out expedition. Having only been in commission for around fifteen months, Jason was wrecked off the coast of St Malo on 21 July 1801. Her crew were saved and later exchanged, and in August her wreck was burned to prevent the French from rescuing it.
HMS Trusty was a 50-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy.
HMS Hussar was a 38-gun fifth-rate Amazon-class frigate of the Royal Navy. Launched at the end of 1799, the entirety of the frigate's career was spent serving in the English Channel and off the coast of Spain. Hussar primarily served as a convoy escort and cruiser, in which occupation the frigate took several prizes, including the French privateer Le General Bessieres. Towards the end of 1803 Hussar was sent to serve in Sir Edward Pellew's Ferrol squadron. On 8 February 1804 Hussar was returning to England with dispatches when the ship was wrecked off the coast of Île de Sein. The crew attempted to sail for home in a fleet of commandeered boats, but the majority were forced to go into Brest to avoid sinking in bad weather, where they were made prisoners of war.
HMS Assurance was a 44-gun fifth-rate Roebuck-class ship of the Royal Navy launched in 1780. Commissioned in the same year, the ship served throughout the remainder of the American Revolutionary War on the North America Station. Her service there included capturing the American privateer Rattlesnake on 17 June 1781 and coordinating the evacuation of Savannah, Georgia, in July 1782. Having briefly served as a troop ship during the subsequent peace, Assurance was recommissioned in 1793 for the French Revolutionary Wars. Operating in the West Indies, she served in Sir John Jervis' fleet that captured Martinique, St Lucia, and Guadeloupe in March and April 1794, also playing a part in the capture of the French frigate Bienvenue on 17 March.
