HMS Fury was a Swan class ship sloop of the Royal Navy and was launched in March 1779. [2] She performed mainly anti-privateering duties during the American War of Independence, both in the English Channel and later the Caribbean Sea. She had a short service life, being paid off after less than 5 years service and broken up 3 years after that, but did have notable commanders.
Between 1766 and 1780 the Admiralty had 25 vessels of her class built to a design by Sir John Williams. She is notable for being the first only Royal Navy warship constructed in both Leith and Scotland during the 18th century. [3] [4] Her builders, John Sime & Son, had never built a warship and had no dock big enough so a new yard was laid out at the Sandport. [3] The site lies opposite the Shore on the west bank of the Water of Leith and was reclaimed for the building of Leith Custom House in 1812. [5]
In February 1779, the Admiralty ordered her to be fitted out for service in the English Channel, to be based at the Nore. A failure to correctly remove the supporting timbers on her launch caused her to become stuck fast and a carpenter lost his life. [3] The Navy's overseer reported in a letter to the Admiralty "she moved 4 feet then burst the ways because the dog shores were not knocked away in time. She is now upright and shored on the ground ways and has been surveyed but not damaged. She will have to remain on the slip until the next spring tide." [6] She was finally floated out on the high tide on 19 March. A dispute between the overseer and her builders saw some finishing work completed under contract to other carpenters, and it was not until May of that year that her rigging was being undertaken by a James Patton. [7]
Commander Alexander Agnew of the Hazard was appointed as her commander in February 1779 while she was still not yet launched. In July 1779 it was reported in the Adam's Weekly Courant newspaper of Chester that the Fury had impressed the entire crew of a whaling ship in Whitby Roads and on 31st of that month the St. James Chronicle reported that she left Leith Roads with the tenders Africa and Swan carrying 300 impressed men, the majority of whom were for the new 74-gun ship HMS Edgar. On 4 October, Fury was back off Leith, having conducted a fruitless search on the east coast for the American John Paul Jones, reported in the Public Advertiser of London.
On 30 April 1780, Fury was part of a small Royal Navy squadron conducting operations against privateers in the English channel when three French ships were encountered off of Flamborough Head. [8] The squadron was led by Captain Matthew Squire of the 20-gun sloop HMS Ariadne and also included the armed ships Queen (20 guns) under Richard Trotten and Louden (24 guns) under Stephen Rains. When ordered to engage the French, only Queen followed Ariadne and the enemy escaped by "taking to their sweeps" [9] (using long oars called sweeps to out-pace their pursuers). Queen took substantial damage during this encounter.
A court martial was subsequently called into the events aboard the frigate Santa Margarita at the Nore under Vice Admiral Robert Roddam, commander-in-chief at the Nore, on 29 May 1781. [8] [9] Captain Squire was exonerated, the court noting he was "spirited, great, and highly to be recommended" and that he was "acquitted of every aspersion thrown upon his conduct on that day". [9] Commander Agnew and Rains of the Louden on the other hand were found guilty of ignoring their orders and failing to "do their utmost", [8] and were dismissed from the Navy.
After Agnew's dismissal, Commander Thomas Totty was appointed to Fury on 3 June 1781. [2] The London Gazette reported on 28 June 1783, that Totty took a French Privateer, Union Americaine, in July 1781 in company with the fifth-rate HMS Iphigenia and the cutter HMS Monkey and were awarded their share of the prize money. Totty would later rise to the rank of rear admiral and commander of the Leeward Islands Station, where he would die from Yellow Fever in 1802. Totty took Fury to the Barbados and the Leeward Islands Station in March 1782. The London Chronicle would report that on 27 May of that year, Fury took the French brig Mercury, "laden with coffee, cotton and sugar, in 14 days from Port-au-Prince bound for Philadelphia" as a prize and in December returned to Port Royal with a French Polacca as a prize.
From January to May 1783 her captain was Commander Thomas Wells [2] who would later rise to vice admiral and commander-in-chief at the Nore and would be one of the pallbearers at the funeral of Lord Nelson.
Wells was replaced by Commander William Sidney Smith [2] .. Smith would rise to the rank of admiral and fought extensively in the American Revolutionary Wars, the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790 and the Napoleonic Campaign in Egypt and Syria.
Her captain from May to August 1783 was Commander William Bentinck and after that was Commander William Smith (no relation to William Sidney Smith). [2] The latter would be the final captain of the Fury.
On 25 November 1784, the Admiralty ordered that Fury be paid off and on 29 March 1787 ordered her to be broken up. This commenced at Woolwich in April of that year. [2] No other Royal Navy warships would be built in Leith until the Earnest – a 12 gun sloop – and the Woodlark – a 12 gun brig – both of 1805.
HMS Clio was a Cruizer-class brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched at James Betts' shipyard in Mistleythorn in Essex on 10 January 1807. Her establishment was 71 officers and men, 24 boys and 20 marines. She served in the Baltic during the Napoleonic Wars, accomplished the re-establishment of British rule on the Falkland Islands in 1833, and participated in the First Opium War. She was broken up in 1845.
HMS Nymph was a 14-gun Swan-class sloop of the Royal Navy, built by Israel Pownoll and launched at Chatham Dockyard on 27 May 1778. She was accidentally burnt and sank in the British Virgin Islands in 1783.
Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Cunningham KCH was an officer of the Royal Navy during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. He saw action during the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, eventually rising to the rank of rear-admiral.
HMS Pylades was an 18-gun Dutch-built brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1781. She was originally built as the privateer Hercules, which in November the British captured. She went on to serve during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War and the subsequent years of peace.
HMS Adamant was a 50-gun Portland-class fourth rate warship of the British Royal Navy. She served during the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars in a career that spanned thirty years.
HMS Drake was a 14-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy. She was bought from a commercial builder during the early years of the American War of Independence, and went on to support operations in the English Channel and the Caribbean. At one stage she assisted an attack on a French-held island, an expedition commanded by a young Horatio Nelson. Laid up for a time after the end of the American War of Independence, she returned to service shortly before the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. Drake spent most of her time in Caribbean waters, until being declared unfit for service in 1800 and deleted from the navy lists.

HMS Leith, also known as HM hired armed ship Leith, was launched in 1744 or 1746 in the British "Plantations", more specifically, the colony of Maryland. From 1764 to 1777 she was a Greenlandman, that is a whaler, in the waters east of Greenland. Between 1777 and 1782 she served the Royal Navy as a transport and hired armed naval ship. She was last listed in 1783.
Philemon Pownoll of Sharpham in the parish of Ashprington in Devon, England, was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, rising to the rank of post-captain.

HMS Childers was a brig-sloop of the British Royal Navy, initially armed with 10 carriage guns which were later increased to 14 guns. The first brig-sloop to be built for the Navy, she was ordered from a commercial builder during the early years of the American War of Independence, and went on to support operations in the English Channel and the Caribbean. Laid up for a time after the end of the American War of Independence, she returned to service shortly before the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. She had an active career in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, capturing numerous French privateers and during the Gunboat War participated in a noteworthy single-ship action. The navy withdrew her from service at the beginning of 1811, at which time she was broken up.
Admiral Sir Henry Edwyn Stanhope, 1st Baronet was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief, The Nore.
Rear-Admiral Christopher Hill was a Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, River Medway and the Nore. Having joined the Royal Navy in 1731, Hill served off Ireland, Portugal, and in the Mediterranean Sea before being promoted to commander in 1746. After several commands he was then promoted to post-captain in 1747. While commanding HMS Dover he captured the French East Indiaman Pondichéry during the Seven Years' War. Hill was on half pay between 1760 and 1769, then being given command of HMS Augusta and serving as Commander-in-Chief, River Medway and the Nore for the following year. His last command was HMS Barfleur towards the end of the year. A well-regarded officer, Hill was promoted to rear-admiral in January 1778 but was killed in a fall from his horse six months later.
HMS Ceres was an 18-gun sloop launched in 1777 for the British Royal Navy that the French captured in December 1778 off Saint Lucia. The French Navy took her into service as Cérès. The British recaptured her in 1782 and renamed her HMS Raven, only to have the French recapture her again early in 1783. The French returned her name to Cérès, and she then served in the French Navy until sold at Brest in 1791.
HMS Weazel or Weazle was a 16-gun ship-sloop of the Royal Navy, in active service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. Launched in 1745, she remained in British service until 1779 and captured a total of 11 enemy vessels. She was also present, but not actively engaged, at the Second Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1747.
HMS Snake was a British Royal Navy ship launched in 1797 as the only member of her class of brig-sloops. She captured or destroyed two French privateers and one Danish privateer. She also captured numerous small merchantmen, but spent time escorting convoys to and from the West Indies. She was sold in 1816.
HMS Musquito was a 16-gun ship-sloop, previously the French privateer Magicienne or Petite Magicienne. The Royal Navy captured her in March 1798. After the Spanish captured Musquito in September 1798, she served in the Spanish Navy until she was broken up in 1805.
The Thames-class frigate was a 32-gun fifth-rate frigate class of eight ships of the Royal Navy based on the Richmond-class frigate designed by William Bately. The ships were ordered to the older design, which was of a smaller type of ship compared to more modern designs, so that they could be built quickly and cheaply in time to assist in defending against Napoleon's expected invasion of Britain. The class received several design changes to the Richmond class, being built of fir instead of oak, with these changes making the class generally slower and less weatherly than their predecessors, especially when in heavy weather conditions. The first two ships of the class, Pallas and Circe, were ordered on 16 March 1804 with two more ordered on 1 May and the final four on 12 July. The final ship of the class, Medea, was cancelled on 22 October before construction could begin but the other seven ships of the class were commissioned between 1804 and 1806.
