HMS Lord Melville (also known as HMS Melville) was a brig of the Royal Navy launched at Kingston, Ontario, on 20 July 1813. Initially designed as a schooner, she was altered to 14-gun brig in 1813. She served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812, and was renamed HMS Star on 22 January 1814. By 1815, she was unfit for anything but transport duties. She was sold in 1837.

Description

Lord Melville was initially ordered as a schooner to a design by Master Shipwright George Record of the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard and was enlarged to a brig after construction began. [1] The vessel measured 186 4694 tons burthen and was 71 ft 7 in (21.8 m) long at the gun deck and 56 ft 9+12 in (17.3 m) at the keel. The vessel had a beam of 24 ft 8 in (7.5 m) and a draught of 9 ft 9 in (3.0 m). [2] [3] The brig's hold had a depth of 8 ft 0 in (2.4 m). Lord Melville had an initial complement of 98 composed of 60 officers and crew and 38 Royal Marines. [3] [4] By 1830, this number had dropped to 80. [5] The vessel was initially armed with sixteen 32-pounder (15 kg) carronades, later reduced to twelve 32-pounder carronades and adding two 18-pounder (8 kg) long guns. [2] [4] In 1815, the armament consisted of four 18-pounder guns, two 9-pounder (4 kg) guns and eight 24-pounder (11 kg) carronades. By 1830, all fourteen guns were 32-pounder carronades. [5]

Service history

As Lord Melville

During a survey of the shipyard at Kingston, Upper Canada, it was found that there was enough building material contained within the yard to construct a new vessel. A schooner was ordered for the Lake Ontario squadron in March 1813. [1] Lord Melville was launched at Kingston on 22 July 1813. [5] The brig departed Kingston with Commodore Sir James Lucas Yeo's squadron on 31 July for Lake Ontario with the intent of engaging their American counterparts under Commodore Isaac Chauncey. Lord Melville took part in a series of engagements off the Niagara River and Burlington Bay, including the capture of the American schooners Julia and Growler on 10 August. The following day, Lord Melville sprang a leak and the squadron returned Kingston, where the brig underwent repairs. [6]

Yeo's squadron returned to Lake Ontario on 24 August and sailed for Niagara. On 11 September, the British squadron became becalmed off the Genesee River, where it was set upon by the American squadron. Lord Melville and Royal George were the vessels closest to the American squadron and bore the brunt of the cannon fire. Between the two vessels, they suffered four men killed and five wounded, but the British squadron escaped. In a following engagement on 28 September, after the flagship of the British squadron, Wolfe was dismasted, Lord Melville and Earl of Moira attacked the American battle line, exchanging heavy fire with Madison, Oneida and Governor Tompkins. Lord Melville was nearly captured by the American flagship General Pike. The British retreated into Burlington Bay. Lord Melville and Beresford patrolled while Wolfe and Royal George made repairs. The squadron returned to Kingston after the two larger vessels were capable of sailing. [7]

As part of the British attempt to intercept the American army marching on Montreal in October, the smaller vessels in the squadron were detached under Captain William Mulcaster and sailed to French Creek. There, four vessels, including Lord Melville bombarded the Americans. The British were forced to withdraw after the American gunnery from the shore became too intense. Mulcaster's force suffered one killed and five injured. In November, the squadron remained mostly at anchor due to the weather and Lord Melville made one final trip on 3 December before being laid up for the winter. [8]

As Star

The brig was renamed Star on 22 January 1814, reclassified as a brig-sloop and command was given to Commander Charles Cunliffe Owen. [5] [9] In May 1814, Lieutenant Charles Anthony took command of Star. [2] On 4 May, the British squadron sailed from Kingston with infantry and Royal Marines embarked. Yeo's squadron arrived off Fort Oswego on 5 May. The following day at 06:00, the attack on Fort Oswego began. At 12:00, Star and Charwell (the renamed Earl of Moira) escorted the gunboats and bateaux loaded with infantry towards the shore. The British attack was successful and the fort was captured. The town was looted of goods and the squadron returned to Kingston on 8 May. [10]

The squadron sailed again on 11 May and began a naval blockade of the main American naval base on Lake Ontario, Sackett's Harbor on 19 May. Star was used to transport troops to the Burlington and Niagara regions while the larger vessels of the squadron maintained the blockade. Following the British defeat at Sandy Creek where a detachment from the squadron had been captured or killed, Yeo lifted the blockade on 5 June and the British squadron returned to Kingston. [11]

Two captains of the squadron had been captured at Sandy Creek, which led to a shuffle in commands. Commander Alexander Dobbs became the commanding officer of Star. In July Dobbs took command of a detachment from the squadron composed of Star, Charwell, Magnet and the British Army tender Vincent that sailed to the Niagara River to provide quick transportation for the forces under General Gordon Drummond's forces moving from York, Upper Canada into the Niagara region. Following the loss of Magnet, which had been blown up to avoid capture, Dobbs' detachment remained penned up in the Niagara River by elements of the American squadron. Dobbs led a party of his men from his vessels to Fort Erie where they operated under Drummond's command. Dobbs and his men captured two American schooners, Ohio and Somers, on 12 August that had been left behind to aid the American army. However, the commander of Netley (the renamed Beresford) was killed in the action. The two prizes were taken down the Niagara River to Chippawa. On 15 August, Dobbs and his men were among the attackers during an assault on Fort Erie. Over 48 men in the party were injured, killed or missing with Dobbs among the wounded. [12]

On 20 October, the larger ships of Yeo's squadron arrived off the Niagara River, forcing the Americans to withdraw. Star, Charwell and Netley came out to Yeo's vessel and disembarked the infantry reinforcements and supplies they carried for Drummond's army. This took until 22 October and the entire squadron returned to Kingston on 24 October. On 1 November, the squadron sailed again to Niagara, ferrying infantry to Fort George and returned with troops bound for Kingston. On 28 November, Montreal (the renamed Wolfe), Niagara (the renamed Royal George), Charwell, Star and Netley sailed from Kingston to resupply the army in the Niagara region. They returned on 9 December. [13]

Star was fit for nothing but transport duties by 1815. [5] In 1815, the vessel was placed under the command of Acting Lieutenant Massy Herbert. Star was paid off into reserve in June 1816. [2] She was sold in 1837. [5]

HMS <i>Detroit</i> (1813)

HMS Detroit was a 20-gun sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in July 1813 and serving on Lake Erie during the War of 1812. She was the most powerful British ship in the Lake Erie squadron until the Americans captured her during the Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813. Detroit was commissioned into the United States Navy as its first USS Detroit. However, she was so damaged that the sloop took no further part in the war. USS Julia was a schooner in the United States Navy during the War of 1812. Initially the privately-owned schooner Julia, she was captured at the onset of the war by armed boats looking for violators of President James Madison's embargo of trade with the British. Purchased by the United States Navy, the vessel was armed with two guns and made part of the squadron on Lake Ontario. Julia took part in the Battle of York and the Battle of Fort George. In August 1813, the schooner was captured by the Royal Navy after failing to execute a turn and was put in service as HMS Confiance. The vessel continued as a warship in British service for a couple of weeks before being converted to a troop transport. In October, Confiance was recaptured by the Americans and renamed Julia. No longer considered capable as a warship, the vessel was retired from service.

HMS Royal George was a British 20-gun wooden sloop of the Provincial Marine, and subsequently, the Royal Navy, operating on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. The vessel took part in several Engagements on Lake Ontario and was the flagship of the Provincial Marine at the First Battle of Sackett's Harbor. In 1814, the vessel was renamed Niagara. Following the war, the sloop was converted to a transport and sold in 1837.

HMS Duke of Gloucester was a 10-gun brig of the Royal Navy which was launched at the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard in Kingston, Ontario. A Provincial Marine vessel, during the War of 1812, the brig took part in several of the early engagements between British and American naval forces on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. While being repaired at York, Duke of Gloucester was captured by Americans in 1813. A month later the British destroyed the brig at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor.

HMS St Lawrence was a 102-gun first-rate wooden warship of the Royal Navy that served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Built on the lake at the Royal Navy dockyard in Kingston, Ontario, she was the only Royal Navy ship of the line ever to be launched and operated entirely in fresh water. Constructed in 1814, the ship's arrival on the lake ended all naval action and St Lawrence finished the war having never gone into battle. Following the war, the vessel was laid up, eventually being sold in 1832 to private interests. The ship was later sunk and is now a recreational dive spot.

HMS Princess Charlotte, later HMS Burlington, was a 42-gun fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy built in 1814, during the War of 1812 at the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard in Kingston, Ontario. She had originally been built as Vittoria, but was renamed before being launched. She was constructed to a design by George Record, and was built under a private contract by Master shipwright John Goudie. She served on Lake Ontario, having been commissioned at Oswego on 5 May 1814 under Captain William Mulcaster.

HMS Psyche was a 54-gun fourth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. She was built at the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard in Kingston, Upper Canada during the War of 1812, using frames shipped from Britain and assembled in Upper Canada. The ship was not completed until after the end of the war in 1815 and did not enter service. Under the Rush–Bagot Treaty of 1816, the frigate was disarmed and laid up at Kingston. The ultimate fate of the ship is unknown.

HMS Prince Regent was a 56-gun British warship that served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Prince Regent was built at the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard in Kingston, Upper Canada and launched on 14 April 1814. Rated as a fourth-rate frigate, Prince Regent took part in the Raid on Fort Oswego in 1814. Following the War of 1812 the frigate was renamed HMS Kingston on 9 December 1814. In 1817, the vessel was placed in reserve following the Rush-Bagot Treaty that demilitarized all the lakes along the United States-Canada border. Discarded in 1832, the vessel found no buyer and sank in Deadman Bay off Kingston after 1832.

HMS Moira was a British 14-gun schooner of the Royal Navy, that plied the waters of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River during the War of 1812. Initially constructed for the Provincial Marine in 1805, the vessel took part in the Engagements on Lake Ontario. Renamed Charwell in 1814, following the war, the vessel became a powder hulk and an accommodation vessel. The vessel was sold in 1837.

HMS Wolfe was a 20-gun sloop-of-war, launched at the Kingston Royal Naval Dockyard at Kingston, Upper Canada, on 22 April 1813. She served in the British naval squadron in several engagements on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Upon her launch, Wolfe was made the flagship of the squadron until larger vessels became available. Along with the naval engagements on Lake Ontario, Wolfe supported land operations in the Niagara region and at the Battle of Fort Oswego. Following the war, the vessel was laid up in reserve and eventually sold in 1832.

Provincial Marine was a coastal protection service in charge of the waters in the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and parts of Lake Champlain under British control. While ships of the Provincial Marine were designated HMS, they were operated in more of a coast guard manner than as a full-fledged navy. Operations were maintained and staffed by the Royal Navy. Most ships of the Provincial Marine were built on the Great Lakes.

HMS General Hunter was a 10-gun brig of the Upper Canada Provincial Marine then, in 1813, the Royal Navy for their squadron on Lake Erie. She was ordered and built as a schooner in 1806 to replace Hope, a Provincial Marine vessel that had run aground in 1805. General Hunter was launched in 1807, entering service that year. With the outbreak of the War of 1812, General Hunter was converted to a brig and rearmed. As part of the Lake Erie squadron, General Hunter was present at the Battle of Lake Erie where the United States Navy defeated the British and gained control of the lake. General Hunter was captured at the battle and taken into American service. With the ship's name shortened to Hunter, she was used as a transport for the rest of the war. Following the war, the ship was sold into mercantile service. In 1816, the ship ran aground in a storm on Lake Huron and wrecked. The ship's contents were salvaged, but the wreck was left to be buried under the sand. In 2004, the wreck became the site of archaeological excavations and artifacts were retrieved from the site and placed in museums.

Queen Charlotte was the ship-rigged ship-sloop constructed for the Upper Canada Provincial Marine in 1810 as part of the fleet renewal in the lead-up to the War of 1812. Ordered in 1809, the ship was designed by Master Shipwright William Bell and constructed at Amherstburg Royal Naval Dockyard in Amherstburg, Upper Canada on Lake Erie. The design was based on the Snake class and was considered an effective design. During the War of 1812, Queen Charlotte was part of the Lake Erie squadron. After the Royal Navy took over command of the Great Lakes, Queen Charlotte was commissioned in 1813. On 10 September 1813, Queen Charlotte and the rest of the Lake Erie squadron were captured at the Battle of Lake Erie. The ship entered service with the United States Navy, though after the defeat of the British squadron, saw no further action during the war. Following the war, the ship was intentionally sunk at Put-in-Bay for preservation. Raised and sold into commercial service in 1825, the vessel continued in service until 1844, when the ship was no longer considered serviceable and left to rot as a dismasted hulk.

<i>Governor Simcoe</i> (1793 ship) Merchant schooner launched in 1793 and British naval vessel

Governor Simcoe was a merchant schooner launched in 1793. The Provincial Marine acquired her in 1813 and renamed her after the British naval officer Sir Sidney Smith. She saw service on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. The Royal Navy acquired her in 1814 and renamed her HMS Magnet. A few months later her captain had to blow her up to prevent the Americans from capturing the vessel.

Prince Regent was a schooner constructed for Upper Canada's Provincial Marine for use on Lake Ontario. Built just before the beginning of the War of 1812, the vessel took part in the attack on Sackett's Harbor, New York. With the arrival of the Royal Navy in the Great Lakes under the command of Commodore James Lucas Yeo in 1813, the vessel was renamed HMS Lord Beresford or General Beresford, or Beresford. The British detachment on the lake engaged the American naval squadron and attacked American positions in the Niagara region, while supporting British armies.
