HMS Oxford was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career escorting convoys of merchant ships, participated with the fleet, including the Battle Velez-Malaga in 1704. She was sold in 1714. [1]
Oxford was the first vessel to bear this name in the Royal Navy. [2]
Newport was the second named vessel since its use for a 24-gun sixth rate launched at Portsmouth in 1694 and captured by the French on 5 July 1696 in the Bay of Fundy. [3]
She was ordered in the third batch of two ships to be built under contract by Thomas Ellis of Shoreham. She was launched on 29 November 1695. [4]
She was commissioned on 26 October 1695 under the command of Captain Richard Sheerman, RN. Two days later on the 28th, Captain George Delavall, RN took command. In 1696 Captain James Jesson, RN took command for a New England convoy. She was renamed Newport on 3 September 1698. [5]
She was commissioned as HMS Newport in 1699 under the command of Captain Salmon Morricw, RN for the North America and West Indies station through 1701; by 1702 she had been assigned to the fleet. 1703 a new commander took command, Captain Charles Fotherby, RN for service in the North Sea. 1704 she was under command of Captain George Paddon, RN. At the Battle of Velez-Malaga She was in the center squadron of Rooke's Fleet on 13 August 1704. She was with Leake's squadron in 1704–05. In 1705 she was assigned to the Mediterranean under Commander Robert Leake, RN. In 1706, Commander Isaac Cooke, RN took command for service in the English Channel and North Sea. 1709 she was with the Leeward Islands convoy under command of Commander Charles Poole, RN then a Newfoundland convoy in 1710. She was then assigned to the Channel and North Sea in 1711 and just the North Sea 1712 thru 1713. Finally she was assigned as quarantine guard at Hull in 1713. [6]
HMS Oxford was sold to John Mackfeorys for £408 on 29 July 1714. [7] [Note 1]
HMS Essex was a 70-gun third rate built by Sir Henry Johnson of Blackwall in 1678/79. During the War of the English Succession she fought in the last major action. She was rebuilt in 1699/1700. During the War of Spanish Succession she fought at Vigo Bay, the Capture of Gibraltar and Velez Malaga. She also fought at the Battle off Passero in 1718. She was rebuilt again in 1736-40. She was in action off Toulon in 1744. She was active in the Channel and against French ports during the Seven Years War. She fought at Quiberon Bay in 1759. She was wrecked in Quiberon Bay in November 1759.
HMS Kent was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line built by Sir Henry Johnson of Blackwall in 1677/79. She served during the War of English Succession 1699 to 1697, participating in the Battle of Barfleur. She was rebuilt in 1697/99. She served during the War of Spanish Succession 1702 to 1712 and partook in the Battles of Vigo and Velez-Malaga. She partook in the Battle of Passaro then served during the short war with Spain, December 1718 to February 1720. She was rebuilt in 1722/26. She spent the next thirteen years as a guard ship at Portsmouth. In the 1740s, she was off Cape Finisterre then in the West Indies. She returned home and was finally broken in 1744.
HMS Phoenix was built as a fireship as part of the 1693–94 programme of Fireships. After her commissioning she spent time in the English Channel then joined the Fleet for the Battle of Vigo Bay followed by the Battle of Velez-Malaga. She went aground in the Isles of Scilly and was salvaged. While laid up at Plymouth in 1708 was rebuilt as a 24-gun sixth rate. After recommissioning she spent her time in Home Waters, North America and the West Indies. She was rebuilt again in 1727 before finally being sold in 1744.
HMS Maidstone was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career between Home Waters and North America with junkets to the West Indies and once to the Mediterranean. Mainly employed as a trade protection vessel. She was sold in 1714.
HMS Jersey was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent most of her career in the West Indies. She was wrecked there in October 1707.
HMS Queenborough was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. The bulk of her career was spent in Home Waters. During her time in the English Channel she took three French privateers. She went to the Leeward Islands where two of her Captains died before returning home. She was sold in 1719.
HMS Swan was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she went to the West Indies, then returned for service in the Irish Sea and English Channel. She then returned to the West Indies where she was lost with all hands in 1707.
HMS Solebay was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career mainly in the North Sea with a stint in the Irish sea. Mainly employed as a trade protection vessel. She was wrecked in 1709.
HMS Penzance was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career in Home Waters with a foray to the Moroccan coast. Mainly employed as a trade protection vessel. She was sold in 1713.
HMS Dunwich was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After commissioning she spent her career mainly in Home Waters with forays to Morocco, North America and the Mediterranean. She was involved in the capture of five privateers. She was sunk as a breakwater in 1714.
HMS Lizard was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. She was commissioned for service in the East Indies, then Mediterranean, followed by Home Waters in the Irish Sea. She was sold in 1714.
HMS Flamborough was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. She was commissioned for service in Home waters, then Mediterranean. She was captured by the French in 1705 and scuttled.
HMS Seaford was a member of the standardized 20-gun sixth rates built at the end of the 17th century. After she was commissioned she had a very varied career, starting in the Mediterranean then the Irish Sea, then to Newfoundland, the North Sea followed by a great repair then to the Leeward Islands. She was dismantled in 1722 and rebuilt as a bomb vessel in 1727 than a 20-gun sixth rate in 1728. She served in the West Indies, America and the Mediterranean. She was finally broken in 1740.
HMS Sun Prize was a 22-gun sixth rate taken by HMS Litchfield on 13 May 1704. She was registered as a Royal Navy Vessel on 1 July 1704. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1704 for service in the English Channel. She was recaptured by a French 36-gun privateer off St Albans Head in 1708.
HMS Medway's Prize was a 28-gun sixth rate taken by HMS Medway on 17 August 1704. She was registered as a Royal Navy Vessel on 6 September 1704. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in Home Waters then Jamaica. She was sold in late 1713.
HMS Deal Castle was a 24-gun sixth-rate ship of the Royal Navy, purchased in 1706 and in service in West Indies, North America and English waters until 1727 when she was rebuilt at Sheerness. She commissioned after her rebuild in May 1727 and served in Home waters, North America and the West Indies. She was finally broken at Deptford in August 1746.
HMS Glasgow was the Royal Scottish Navy vessel Royal Mary transferred to the Royal Navy by the Act of Union of 1707. Her design was based on the standardize 20-gun sixth rates. After commissioning she was assigned to Home Waters. She took a privateer in 1708 and another in 1712. She was sold in 1719.
HMS Gibraltar was the name ship of the Gibraltar Group of 24-gun sixth rates. After commissioning she spent her career in Home waters and North America on trade protection duties. She was rebuilt at Deptford between 1725 and 1727. After her rebuild, she served in Home Waters, North America, the West Indies, and the Mediterranean on trade protection. She was sold in 1749.
HMS Sheerness was a fifth rate built under the 1689 programme built at Sheerness Dockyard. Her guns were listed under old terms for guns as demi-culverines, sakers and minions. After commissioning she spent her career in Home Waters, North America, Mediterranean and the West Indies. She was reduced to a 20-gun sixth rate in 1717 then rebuilt as a Modified 1719 Establishment sixth rate in 1731. She was sold in 1744.
HMS Tartar was a 32-gun fifth rate built by the Woolwich Dockyard in 1702. Her initial commissioning was in time for the War of the Spanish Succession. She partook in the Battle of Velez Malaga in 1704. She spent the rest of her career on counter piracy and trade protection patrols. She was rebuilt as a 20-gun sixth rate in 1733. She was finally broken in 1755.
