HMS Tweed was launched in 1807. On the Jamaica station she captured two small privateers and several merchant vessels. On the North Sea station she captured one small privateers and several merchant vessels. She was wrecked on 5 November 1813 with the loss of more than half her crew.

Career

Commander Thomas Symonds commissioned Tweed in March 1807. He sailed for Jamaica on 30 June 1807. Tweed arrived at Barbados on 25 August, having come via Madeira with a fleet that she had been convoying. On the way she captured Fly on 10 July. [2] Tweed arrived at Jamaica on 6 September.

On 30 September Tweed captured Antionette. [3]

She sent into Jamaica Mary, Parsons, master, which had been sailing home to New York from Santo Domingo.

On 29 February 1808 Tweed captured the Spanish letter of marque schooner Santissima Trinidad. She had sailed from Puerto Cavallo and was bound for Cadiz. Although she was pierced for 14 guns, she had only four mounted. She had a crew of 20 men. [4]

On 16 March Tweed captured the French privateer schooner Aventure. Aventure was armed with three guns and had a crew of 52 men. A few days earlier Tweed had captured a small schooner that Aventure had captured and was using as a tender. [4]

Tweed detained and sent into Jamaica the Swedish ship Lychars. She had been sailing from Cape François to Philadelphia. Tweed had captured Lyckan on 15 May 1808. [2]

On 17 April 1809, HMS Pompée, HMS Recruit, and HMS Neptune, captured D'Hautpoul off Puerto Rico after a chase over three nights and two days. Tweed was in sight and so was able to share in the prize money. [lower-alpha 1]

In June Captain William Pryce Cumby received command of a squadron consisting of Polyphemus, Aurora, Tweed, Sparrow, Thrush, Griffon, Lark, Moselle, Fleur de la Mer, and Pike. They sailed from Port Royal on 7 June with troops under Major-General Hugh Lyle Carmichael to assist the Spanish forces besieging the French in the city of San Domingo. Captain Symonds was in command of the sloops, schooners, and gun-brigs during the blockade. The blockade sped up the city's surrender by cutting off the enemy's accustomed supply by sea. [6] [7] [lower-alpha 2] Cumby sent Tweed to Port Royal, where she arrived on the evening of 12 July with news of the French surrender on the 6th.

On 7 October 1809 Tweed seized the American schooner Success for a breech of the revenue laws. [lower-alpha 3]

On 11 December Tweed seized the American schooner Daniel and Robert for a breech of the revenue laws. [lower-alpha 4]

Tweed returned to England in 1810. In October she was in the North sea, where on the 17th she captured the Danish privateer Steinbill, of 10 guns and 30 men. She was out of "Syet" (possibly Sylt), and Tweed sent her into Yarmouth. [12] On the same day Tweed captured the Danish sloop Nicklow. [13]

On 15 February 1811 Tweed captured the Danish vessels Anna Maria, Dorothea, Elizabeth, Concordia, and Active. [14] Tweed also captured the Danish sloop Twende Bruders. [15] [lower-alpha 5]

On 13 June 1813 Tweed captured Conde d'Atmada. [17]

Symonds received promotion to post captain on 29 September 1813. [7] In October Commander William Mather replaced Symonds. [1] [18] He had been promoted to the rank of Commander and into Tweed from HMS Rapide.

Fate

On 5 November 1813 Tweed wrecked in Shoal Bay, Newfoundland. Sixty-four men died, including five who died onshore from injuries and exposure. The cause of the wreck was due to the combination of an error in the soundings shown in the Admiralty chart and a strong current that had pushed Tweed inshore. [19]

HMS <i>Acasta</i> (1797) 40-gun Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate

HMS Acasta was a 40-gun Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate. She saw service in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, as well as the War of 1812. Although she never took part in any notable single-ship actions nor saw action in a major battle though she was at the Battle of San Domingo, she captured numerous prizes and rid the seas of many Spanish, French and American privateers. She was finally broken up in 1821.

HMS <i>Kingfisher</i> (1804) Sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Kingfisher was a Royal Navy 18-gun ship sloop, built by John King and launched in 1804 at Dover. She served during the Napoleonic Wars, first in the Caribbean and then in the Mediterranean before being broken up in 1816.

HMS Staunch was a Royal Navy 12-gun Archer-class gun-brig, built by Benjamin Tanner and launched in 1804 at Dartmouth, Devon. She served in the Indian Ocean and participated in the action of 18 September 1810 before she foundered with the loss of all hands in 1811.

HMS <i>Sappho</i> (1806) Brig-sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Sappho was a Cruizer class brig-sloop built by Jabez Bailey at Ipswich and launched in 1806. She defeated the Danish brig Admiral Yawl in a single-ship action during the Gunboat War, and then had a notably successful two months of prize-taking in the first year of the War of 1812. She was wrecked in 1825 off the Canadian coast and then broken up in 1830.

HMS <i>Belette</i> (1806) Brig-sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Belette was an 18-gun Cruizer-class brig-sloop, built by King at Dover and launched on 21 March 1806. During the Napoleonic Wars she served with some success in the Baltic and the Caribbean. Belette was lost in the Kattegat in 1812 when she hit a rock off Læsø.

HMS Colibri was the French naval Curieux-class brig Colibri, launched in 1808, that the British captured in 1809 and took into the Royal Navy under her existing name. She spent her time in British service on the North American station based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During the War of 1812, Colibri served mostly in blockading the American coast and capturing privateers and merchant ships. She foundered in 1813 in Port Royal Sound, South Carolina, but without loss of life.

HMS Fleur de la Mer was the French privateer Gipsey, captured in 1806. The British Royal Navy bought her in 1807 and she served until she foundered in 1810.

HMS <i>Diligence</i> (1795) Sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Diligence was the name ship of her class of brig-sloops of the Royal Navy. She was launched in 1795 and lost in 1800. She spent her brief career on the Jamaica station where she captured four armed vessels, one of them after a short engagement, and many small Spanish and French merchant vessels in the Caribbean inter-island and coastal trade.

HMS <i>Calliope</i> (1808) Brig-sloop of the Royal Navy

HMS Calliope was a Cherokee-class brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1808. She operated primarily in the North Sea where she captured numerous small merchant vessels and one French privateer. She also was present at the battle of Lake Borgne, near New Orleans. She was broken up in 1829.

HMS Elizabeth was a French privateer schooner that the Royal Navy captured in 1805 and took into service under her existing name. She participated in an engagement and a campaign that earned her crews clasps to the Naval General Service Medal. She was lost with all hands in 1814 when she capsized in the West Indies.

HMS Plumper was launched in 1807. She captured three small American privateers early in the War of 1812 but was wrecked in December 1812.

HMS <i>Snake</i> (1797) British naval brig (1797–1816)

HMS Snake was a British Royal Navy ship launched in 1797 as the only member of her class of brig-sloops. She captured or destroyed two French privateers and one Danish privateer. She also captured numerous small merchantmen, but spent time escorting convoys to and from the West Indies. She was sold in 1816.

HMS Barbadoes was a 16-gun vessel, the American Herald, captured in 1813. The Royal Navy took her into service as HMS Barbadoes She captured a number of merchantmen and privateers before she was paid-off in May 1816. In 1814–1815 she also captured three Spanish and French slave ships carrying over 1100 enslaved people. Barbadoes became a powder ship in Jamaica that was later wrecked with her remains being sold.

HMS Gracieuse was a French armed schooner that the Royal Navy captured in 1804. While serving with the Royal Navy in the Caribbean she captured two small armed vessels. She was last listed in 1808.
