Harare Central is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe. It is located in the central area of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. Like all Zimbabwean constituencies, Harare Central elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post electoral system. The seat has been represented by MP Lovemore Jimu since the 2023 general election.

History

On 23 June 2020, Murisi Zwizwai was recalled as MP for Harare Central amid factional disputes within the Movement for Democratic Change Alliance. [1] He was reelected to his seat in a 26 March 2022 by-election, this time representing the newly-formed Citizens Coalition for Change. [2] Murisi Zwizwai died in Harare in June 2024, leaving his position vacant. [3]

He was the Member of the National Assembly of Zimbabwe for Harare Central first elected in 2003. He was re-elected in the 2022 by-election. He died in Harare on 1 June 2024, at the age of 54.

Harare Metropolitan Province is a province in northeastern Zimbabwe that comprises Harare, the country's capital and largest city, and three other municipalities, Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa. At independence in 1980, it was originally part of Mashonaland Province which in 1983 was divided into three large provinces, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Mashonaland West - at this point, the city of Harare became part of Mashonaland East. In 1997, along with Bulawayo, it became a metropolitan province, along with the then two nearby urban settlements. Harare Metropolitan Province is divided into four local government areas - a city council, a municipality and two local boards.

Hatcliffe is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, located in the northern suburbs of Harare. The current MP since the 2023 election is Agency Gumbo of the Citizens Coalition for Change.

Zvimba East is a constituency represented the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, located in Zvimba District in Mashonaland West Province. The seat is currently vacant following the November 2023 recall of Oliver Mutasa, the constituency's MP since the 2023 election. A by-election is scheduled to take place in February 2024.

Marondera Central is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, covering much of Marondera, Mashonaland East Province. It was created in 2008 from territory taken from the Marondera East and Marondera West constituencies. Its current MP since the 2018 general election is Caston Matewu of the Citizens Coalition for Change.

Nicola Jane Watson is a Zimbabwean accountant and politician who served as a Member of the National Assembly of Zimbabwe from 2013 until 2023. She was first elected to one of the seats reserved for women, then as the MP for Bulawayo Central in 2018, before defeating the Zanu-PF incumbent Raj Modi in Bulawayo South in 2023.

Allan Norman "Rusty" Markham is a Zimbabwean farmer and politician who was elected to the National Assembly of Zimbabwe for Harare North in the 2018 general election as a member of the MDC Alliance. He crossed the floor to the newly formed Citizens Coalition for Change and was elected Member of Parliament for the neighbouring Harare East constituency in the 2023 general election.

Michael Theodore Hayes Auret was a Zimbabwean farmer, politician, and activist. A devout Catholic, he served as chairman and later director of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe (CCJP) from 1978 until 1999. He also served as a member of Parliament for Harare Central from 2000 to 2003, when he resigned and emigrated to Ireland.

The Harare City Council is the local governing body of Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. It is composed of 46 councillors, each representing a different ward. It is headed by the mayor of Harare, who is assisted by a deputy mayor. The current mayor is Ian Makone of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), and the deputy mayor is Kudzai Mazhombe.

Headlands is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe. Reportedly the country's largest, it was created in 2008 with territory taken from the Makoni North constituency. Located in Makoni District in Manicaland Province, its current MP since the 2023 general election is Farai Mapfumo of ZANU–PF.

Glen View South is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, comprising the southern portion of the Glen View suburb of Harare. It was created in 2008 from the old Glen View constituency, along with Glen View North.

Beitbridge West is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, located in Beitbridge District in Matabeleland South Province. It is currently represented since a December 2023 by-election by Thusani Ndou of ZANU–PF.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2023–2024 Zimbabwean by-elections</span> 2023/2024 by-elections in Zimbabwe

By-elections were held in Zimbabwe on 11 November 2023, on 9 December 2023, on 3 February 2024 and on 27 April 2024 to fill vacancies in the National Assembly and in local government. The by-elections were triggered by Sengezo Tshabangu, who claimed to be the interim Secretary-General of the Citizens Coalition for Change, when he recalled nine constituency legislators, six proportional representative women’s quota and senators and seventeen councilors mainly from Bulawayo, one of the party's strongholds.

Sengezo Tshabangu is a Zimbabwean politician. Since March 2024, Tshabangu has served in the Zimbabwe parliament as a Senator from Matabeleland North Province. He claims to be the interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). In October 2023, he recalled fifteen parliamentarians and seventeen councilors, including Masvingo's mayor, citing they were no longer party members in October. He went on to recall a further nine councilors, including Harare mayor Ian Makoni and his deputy on 9 November 2023. On May 30, 2024, National Assembly Speaker Advocate Jacob Mudenda announced that Tshabangu was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Zimbabwe parliament. However, it has not yet reported if he was sworn in to this position. It was also revealed that no meeting was held for this decision among CCC MPs.

Prince Dubeko Sibanda is a Zimbabwean politician who was elected in the 2018 general election to represent the constituency of Binga North in the National Assembly as a member of the MDC Alliance. He was recalled as an MP by MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora in October 2020. Sibanda joined the Citizens Coalition for Change and won the seat back in a by-election on 26 March 2022.
