Heaven Is Earth is a studio album by the American rock band Self Defense Family. It's the band's fifth studio album overall, and second effort after changing its name from End of a Year to Self Defense Family. The album was released on June 30, 2015 through Deathwish Inc. [2] [3]

Background

For Heaven Is Earth, Self Defense Family recorded two tracks with four producers in four different cities on the East Coast of the United States for a total of eight songs. The band recorded with Kurt Ballou of Converge at GodCity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts; with former Orchid and Ampere member Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts; with Jon Low, who previously worked with Kurt Vile and The National, at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and with Mark Miller, who previously worked with Dinosaur Jr. and Garth Brooks, at Sone Lab in East Hampton, Massachusetts. A limited edition 7" single for the Heaven Is Earth's second track "Talia" accompanied by the B-side track "Taxying," which was an outtake from the album's sessions, [2] was released for Record Store Day 2015 [1] with cover art nearly identical to that of its parent album, with the exception of the person in the center of the image being absent. A release for the music video for "Talia" coincided with the album's official announcement date of May 4, 2015. [4] On the subject of the video, Self Defense Family vocalist Patrick Kindlon said: "The video is not so much inspired by but directly ripped off from the Talk Talk 'It's My Life' music video — the best music video in human history. Eventually, we'll do one of those 'band playing in a warehouse' videos. But until then, you get stock footage of animals." [2] On June 2, Self Defense Family released a music video for the album's closing track, "Dave Sim." [5]

Musical style

According to SLUG magazine's Kamryn Feigel, Heaven Is Earth is "a downtempo, post-punk menagerie of droning drums and screaming vocals." [6] AllMusic critic Mark Deming wrote that, on the record, Self Defense Family "build a chain-link fence of sound, with decisive bass and drum patterns woven through guitar figures strummed or pummeled into minimal melodic structures as vocalist and first-among-equals Patrick Kindlon rants and bellows over it all." [7] Pitchfork's Ian Cohen noted the influence of shoegazing over the album, stating: "There’s all the whammy bar abuse and tonal clusters of the genre, but it’s gone straight-edge, with none of the disorientation and gushing ambience." [8]

The album generally received mixed-to-positive reviews from music critics. AllMusic's Mark Deming wrote: "Maybe you can't pogo or mosh to it, but Heaven Is Earth is the kind of music that will please those with a taste for aural experimentation and annoy the narrow-minded, and that is punk rock in all the best ways." [7] Ian Cohen of Pitchfork thought that the album "finds few ways to enhance what you could gain from Kindlon’s interviews or the lyrics sheet—an album that’s literally more interesting on paper." [8] SLUG critic Kamryn Feigel stated: "If you can get through the first few tracks, it gets easier, but Heaven is Earth isn’t anything you need to rush out and grab for your collection." [6]

Marissa Nadler is an American musician and fine artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. As a singer-songwriter, her music has been characterized as blending "traditional folk, Gothic Americana, and dreamy pop into an original musical framework". Her music "is rooted in old-school country and folk but brings in elements of experimental and black metal". Sometimes the term "dream folk" has been invoked to describe her work.

Deathwish Inc.

Deathwish, Inc. is an independent record label conceived by Jacob Bannon of Converge and Tre McCarthy in 2000. Their first release was Deeper the Wound, a split album between Converge and Japanese band Hellchild on April 23, 2001. Deathwish established itself quickly, working with a diverse group of bands and eventually becoming one of the most respected and innovative labels in contemporary hardcore punk and aggressive music in general.

Deafheaven American metal band formed in 2010

Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah, in April 2011. A follow-up album, Sunbather, was released in 2013 to wide critical acclaim, becoming one of the best reviewed albums of the year in the United States. Code Orange is an American hardcore punk band that formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2008. The band consists of guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Eric "Shade" Balderose, guitarist and vocalist Reba Meyers, vocalist and drummer Jami Morgan, bassist Joe Goldman, guitarist Dominic Landolina and touring drummer Ethan Young.

"Heaven" is a song recorded by American rapper Jay-Z for his twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail (2013), featuring American recording artist Justin Timberlake. The song was written by Jay-Z, Timberlake, The-Dream, R.E.M., Adrian Younge, Timbaland, and J-Roc, while the production was handled by the latter two. During the song, Jay-Z touches on subjects of religious allegory and an interrogation of organized religion. The song has since peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.

Try Me is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Self Defense Family and first under this moniker — previous studio albums were released under the name End of a Year. The album was released on January 7, 2014 through Deathwish Inc. In November 2013, the band released a lyric video for the track "Turn the Fan On." The album was available on the digital music streaming service Spotify over a month before its official release date.

Single Mothers is a Canadian punk rock band based in London, Ontario that formed in 2008. The band released its debut studio album Negative Qualities in 2014.

Year of the Hare (song)

"Year of the Hare" is a single by the Canadian rock band Fucked Up and marks the seventh entry in their Zodiac Series of releases, each named after a different Chinese zodiac sign of the Chinese calendar. The single was released on June 16, 2015 though Jacob Bannon of Converge's label Deathwish Inc., who also contributed to the album's artwork and packaging. The lyrical content, the song's composition and interactive music video all make allusions to time, loops and rabbits.

<i>ISON</i> (album) 2017 studio album by Sevdaliza

ISON is the debut studio album by Iranian-Dutch singer Sevdaliza. It was released on 26 April 2017 by Twisted Elegance. The album is named after Comet ISON, a sungrazing comet. It includes two songs from Sevdaliza's second extended play, Children of Silk (2015), "Amandine Insensible" and "Marilyn Monroe", the latter of which was released as the album's fourth single on 14 April 2017. "Human" was released as the lead single on 17 November 2016, which was followed by "Hero" as the second single on 4 April 2017 and "Hubris" as the third single on 12 April.

The Destroyer is the third studio album by Canadian electronic music project TR/ST, fronted by Robert Alfons. It is the first half of the two-part album with the same title. It was released on April 19, 2019 by Royal Mountain Records and his own record label Grouch. The album features contributions from Maya Postepski, his collaborator on TR/ST's debut studio album, TRST, as well as Lars Stalfors and Damian Taylor. It is his first release in which he is not credited as Trust.
