Funen County is a former county in central Denmark, comprising the islands of Funen, Langeland, Tåsinge, Ærø, and approximately 90 other islands, of which only 25 are inhabited. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising the former counties of Odense and Svendborg. The county was abolished from 1 January 2007, when it merged into Region of Southern Denmark.
Svendborg is a town on the island of Funen in south-central Denmark, and the seat of Svendborg Municipality. With a population of 27,594, Svendborg is Funen's second largest city. In 2000 Svendborg was declared "Town of the year" in Denmark, and in 2003 it celebrated its 750th anniversary as a market town. By road, Svendborg is located 195 kilometres (121 mi) southwest of Copenhagen, 183 kilometres (114 mi) south of Aarhus, 44.2 kilometres (27.5 mi) south of Odense, and 28.5 kilometres (17.7 mi) east of Faaborg.
Until January 1, 2007 Rudkøbing Municipality was a municipality in the former Funen County, on the central parts of the island of Langeland. It also included the islands of Strynø, Strynø Kalv and a number of small uninhabited islands. The municipality covered an area of 62.94 km2, and had a total population of 6,647 (2006). Its last mayor was Johan Norden, a member of the Social Democrats political party.
Svendborg Municipality is a municipality (kommune) in Region of Southern Denmark on the southeast coast of the island of Funen, as well as on the islands of Drejø, Hjortø, Skarø, Thurø, and Tåsinge off Funen's southeastern shores in south-central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 418 km2, and has a total population of 59,735 (2023). Its mayor is Bo Hansen (2017), a member of the Social Democrats political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council is the city of Svendborg.
Until 1 January 2007, Egebjerg municipality was a municipality in Funen County on the south coast of the island of Funen in south-central Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 124 km², and had a total population of 8,792 (2005). The last mayor of the municipality was Mogens Johansen. Its main city and the site of its municipal council was Vester Skerninge.
Drejø is a Danish island south of Funen with 72 inhabitants, located in Svendborg municipality. The island covers an area of 4.26 km2 (1.64 sq mi), and is 5 km (3 mi) long and 2 km (1 mi) wide at the widest place. A ferry plies between Svendborg, Skarø and Drejø.
Hjortø is a Danish island south of Funen. The island covers an area of 0.9 km2 and has 7 inhabitants as of 2020. The island can be reached by ferry from Svendborg, maximum 12 passengers.
Thurø is a small Danish island in the south-east of Funen and belongs to the Svendborg municipality. Thurø is part of the South Funen Archipelago, comprising c. 55 islands altogether. The island had 3,555 inhabitants as of 2014.
Svendborg County is a former province in Denmark, located on the southern half of the island of Funen in central Denmark. Svendborg County was established in 1793 and abolished in 1970 when it merged with Odense County forming the new Funen County.
