Hicham El Guerrouj is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner. El Guerrouj is the current world record holder for the 1500 metres and mile, and the former world record holder in the 2000 metres. He is the only man since Paavo Nurmi to win a gold medal in both the 1500 m and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games.

The 1500 metres at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics programme were held at Stadium Australia on Monday 25 September, Wednesday 27 September, and Friday 29 September 2000. Forty-one athletes from 26 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 0.25 seconds by Noah Ngeny of Kenya, the nation's first title in the event since 1988 and third overall. Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco took second, matching the nation's best result in the event.
The Men's 5000 metres event at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris, France on Sunday 31 August 2003 at 18:40h. There were a total number of 29 participating athletes, with two qualifying heats held prior to the final. Eliud Kipchoge won the race, followed by the Hicham El Guerrouj and Kenenisa Bekele. The race has received enduring attention because the three medalists–– Kipchoge, El Guerrouj, and Bekele–– are often considered among the greatest runners in history.

Hicham El-Mashtoub was a Lebanese-born Canadian gridiron football center who played two seasons with the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the sixth round of the 1995 NFL draft and by the Edmonton Eskimos in an opening bonus round of the 1995 CFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Arizona and attended Saint-Maxime high school in Montreal, Quebec, where he was raised. El-Mashtoub was also a member of the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he played one season. He died of cancer in September 2021, at the age of 49.
