According to records from the RSSSF, there were many association football cup competitions organized in Zambia since 1962, some of which are the Independence Cup, the Zambian Challenge Cup (both organized in 1961), the Champion of Champions Cup (organized in 1974) and Zambian Coca-Cola Cup, the latter which began in 2001. These competitions are either inactive or were played no more as of 2009. [1]
The Northern Rhodesia Castle Cup, rebranded two years later as the Independence Cup due to the independence of Zambia, was launched in 1962 by the Football Association of Zambia as the top knockout tournament in Zambian football. Until 1965, the winners of this competition were pitted against the winners of the cup competition in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the "Super Castle Cup" (the equivalent of today's super cups). Its winners did not always enter the African Cup Winners' Cup; an entry was often reserved for the winners of the African Cup of Champions Clubs (now the CAF Champions League) which usually contested between four clubs.
It got rebranded as the Mosi Cup in 1993 and has not been played or organized since its last edition in 2007.
The Champion of Champions Cup was a cup competition in Zambian football active from 1974 to 1993. It was played by the teams who finished in the top 4 places in the country's football league system (the equivalence of the "GHALCA Top 4" in Ghana). It was named under various sponsorships; Cadbury Schweppes (1974-1975), the Zambian State Lottery (1976–78) and the Zambia Railways (1979). The winners of this competition occasionally get invited to compete in the African Cup Winners' Cup. [1]
The Northern Rhodesian Challenge Cup is a currently-defunct knockout tournament in Zambian football created in 1962 and originally played by teams featuring all-white teams. Following Northern Rhodesia's independence as Zambia and the competition's rebranding as the Zambian Challenge Cup in 1964, it included teams featuring black people in the country. [1]
The competition was contested by the top 8 teams of the country's league system (the equivalence of South Africa's MTN 8).

The Zambia Super League, known as the MTN Super League for sponsorship purposes, is the top association football league created in 1962 by the Football Association of Zambia. The winners of the league each season receives ZMW1,000,000 ($40000) and a copper trophy engraved with their team name.

Alexander "Alex" Chola was a Zambian footballer and coach. Voted Zambian Footballer of the Year in 1976, he is regarded as one of the greatest Zambian players in history and is the country's second highest goal scorer after Godfrey Chitalu. He made a mark at Mufulira Blackpool and Power Dynamos before becoming Dynamos coach and winning the Coach of the Year award in 1992. Chola died in a plane crash off the coast of Gabon on 27 April 1993.

Moses Simwala was a Zambian footballer and coach. Nicknamed 'the chairman,' Simwala featured for Zambia and Rhokana United as a right winger, the same club he would go on to coach for over 12 years and become the most successful coach in Zambian club football, winning the league title a record 8 times and 21 trophies in all. He was voted Zambian coach of the year in 1988 and 1989.
Vincent Chileshe is a Zambian coach and former goalkeeper. He was crowned Zambian player of the year in 1977 at the age of 20, the first goalkeeper to achieve that feat, and was in goal for Zambia at CAN 1978. He is currently coaching Zambian Division 2 side Young Green Eagles.
Biggie Mbasela, better known as Gibby Mbasela was a Zambian footballer who played for Kalulushi Modern Stars, Mufulira Wanderers, Nkana Red Devils, 1. FC Union Berlin of Germany and Tunisian champions Esperance. Renowned for his dribbling skills, Mbasela was voted Zambian Footballer of the Year in 1990.
Jericho Shinde is a Zambian coach and former footballer, nicknamed "Russian Tank." He was a star player for the Nkana Red Devils, now Nkana F.C Jericho won four league titles and was also a midfielder for Zambia in the eighties. After retirement, Shinde coached Nkana, Kalulushi Modern Stars and Power Dynamos.
Bernard Chanda was one of Zambia's greatest strikers and was the league top scorer three times. Nicknamed 'Bomber,' he played for three of Zambia's biggest clubs – Roan United, Mufulira Wanderers and Rokana United, and is remembered for scoring a hat-trick in the 4–2 semi-final victory over Congo at the 1974 African Cup of Nations tournament. Chanda was voted Zambian Footballer of the Year in 1974 and is fourth on the list of all-time goal scorers for Zambia in international matches behind Godfrey Chitalu, Alex Chola and Kalusha Bwalya with 29 goals.
Fighton Simukonda was a Zambian coach and former footballer. A defender, was part of the Nkana Red Devils side of the 1980s, winning five league titles, and he also captained Zambia. As a coach, he won several Zambian Premier League titles and became the first coach to lead a Zambian club to the group phase of the CAF Champions' League.
Jack Chanda Mwinuna was a Zambian footballer and coach. He played for three of Zambia’s biggest clubs Roan United, Nkana Red Devils and Kabwe Warriors in a successful career that saw him being crowned as Zambian Footballer of the Year in 1985.

The Zambian Charity Shield officially called Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield since 2003 is a season opener match between the champions of the previous Super League season and the holders of the ABSA Cup. If the Super League champions also won the ABSA Cup then the league runners-up provide the opposition. The fixture was first played in the 1967 season. The current holders are Zesco United, who defeated Lusaka Dynamos 4-0 in the 2021 match.
