The Football Association of Zambia is the governing body of association football in Zambia [1] founded in 1929 and based at the "Football House" on Alick Nkhata Road in Lusaka, the country's capital.

Contents

Affiliated to CAF and FIFA in 1964 [2] and COSAFA in 1997, it organizes the local league and the country's national team. [2]

The association governs and controls the Zambian national men's and women's teams which represents the country in international association football. The men's national team was commonly known during the 1980s as the "KK 11" after Dr. Kenneth Kaunda ("KK"), the founder of Zambia who was its president from independence in 1964 until the shift to a democratic multiparty state in 1991 when it changed nicknames to the Chipolopolo or the "Copper Bullets". [5]

The team has appeared in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations thrice, winning it once against Ivory Coast. [6] [7]

David Efford Chabala, popularly known as Efford Chabala was Zambia's first choice goalkeeper from 1983 until his death in a plane crash off the Gabonese coast in 1993 and is one of Zambia's most capped players, with 108 full international appearances. Chabala was instrumental in Zambia's first ever East and Central African Championship success when he saved three penalties in Zambia's 3–0 shoot-out victory over Malawi in the 1984 final in Uganda after a goalless draw at full-time. He was named Zambia's Sportsman of the Year in 1985.

Jacob Mulenga is a Zambian former professional footballer who played as a striker.

Patrick Phiri is a Zambian football coach and former footballer. He featured for Zambian clubs Rokana United and Red Arrows as a striker and represented Zambia at the 1978 and 1982 African Cup of Nations tournaments. As a coach, Phiri led the Zambia U-20 national team to its first ever appearance at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria and was voted Zambian Coach of the Year at the end of the year. He was also in charge of Zambia at the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana and has managed ten different club sides, with three of them more than once. He is currently in charge of Nakambala Leopards in the Zambian Premier League.

City of Lusaka F.C. is football (soccer) Zambian club based in Lusaka founded in 1937. They are a member of the Football Association Zambia. They play their home games at Woodlands Stadium.

Zambia National U-20 Football team are the U-20 football team for Zambia also known as the Junior Chipolpolo as the senior side are simply known as Chipolopolo(Copper Bullets). They came in fourth place in the African Youth Championship 2007, which meant they qualified for the U-20 World Cup where they were in eliminated by 5-time winners of the African Youth Championship Nigeria.

On the evening of 27 April 1993, a DHC-5 Buffalo transport aircraft of the Zambian Air Force crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Libreville, Gabon. The flight was carrying most of the Zambia national football team to a 1994 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Senegal in Dakar. All 25 passengers and five crew members were killed. The official investigation concluded that the pilot had shut down the wrong engine following an engine fire. It also found that pilot fatigue and a faulty instrument had contributed to the accident.

Webster 'Webby' Chikabala was a Zambian football player and coach. Seen by many as one of the best players of his generation, he represented his country at the African Cup of Nations in 1990 and 1992. He was the first Zambian to play professional football in Portugal when he joined Maritimo in August 1990. He died in 1997.
