Hoima–Kaiso–Tonya Road is a road in the Western Region of Uganda, connecting the city of Hoima with the towns of Kaiso and Tonya on the shores of Lake Albert in the oil-rich Albertine Graben.

Location

The road starts at Hoima and continues west through Kaiso, and ends in Tonya, a distance of approximately 92 kilometres (57 mi). [1] The road passes through the village of Kabaale, in Buseruka County, the location of the Uganda Oil Refinery. The coordinates of the road near Tonya are 1°35'06.0"N; 31°04'59.0"E (Latitude:1.585000; Longitude:31.083056). [2]

Upgrading to tarmac

The upgrading of the road involved the conversion of the existing gravel surface to tarmac and the building of bridges and drainages.

Kolin Insaat Turim Sayani Ve Tecaret, a Turkish construction firm, won the tender to build the road at an estimated cost of USh:320 billion (US$125 million). [3] The construction was fully funded by the government of Uganda. [4] The construction contracts were signed in August 2011. [5]

Construction began in June 2012 [6] and was completed in December 2014. [7]

It has been planned since 2010. Community opposition was repressed early on. After 5 years of negotiations the Albertine Graben Refinery Consortium (AGRC) formed in 2018 and agreed to design and build the refinery.

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is a government agency mandated to develop and maintain the national roads network, advise the government on general roads policy, contribute to the addressing of national transport concerns, and perform certain other functions. UNRA is charged with, among other things, the selection of contractors, the supervision of construction, the scheduling of maintenance, and the prioritization of national road works.

The Kampala–Hoima Road is a road in the Central and Western regions of Uganda, connecting the cities of Kampala and Hoima. A section of this road, between Namungoona and Busunju, is being developed into the Kampala–Busunju Expressway.

Kabalega International Airport, also Hoima International Airport, is an airport under construction in Hoima District, Uganda. It is part of the infrastructure under construction as Uganda prepares to develop its nascent petroleum industry. When completed, it would be Uganda's second international airport, besides Entebbe International Airport. The new airport is expected to facilitate mobilization of equipment for construction of the Uganda Oil Refinery and assist in the development of agriculture and tourism in Uganda's Western Region.

The Buhimba–Nalweyo–Kakindu–Bulamagi Road is a road in the Western Region of Uganda, connecting the town of Buhimba in Hoima District with the towns of Nalweyo, Kakindu and Bulamagi, in Kakumiro District.

The Kashenyi–Mitooma Road in the Western Region of Uganda connects the town of Kashenyi in Bushenyi District with the town of Mitooma in Mitooma District. The road measures approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi).
