Horizon Maritime Services Ltd is a company which provides vessels and offshore services for arctic duty in Canada and Norway. It is based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and its joint ventures include partnerships with two First Nations, the Miawpukek (as Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Services) and the Heiltsuk (as Heiltsuk Horizon); in addition, Horizon operates joint ventures with Kotug as Kotug Canada and with Bourbon as Bourbon Horizon.
Horizon Maritime was started in spring 2015, offering services out of Halifax and Mulgrave, Nova Scotia; St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador; and Fort McMurray, Alberta. [2] It was co-founded by Sean Leet and Steve Widmeyer, with funding from CFFI Ventures, owned by John Risley. [3] The Canadian offshore services market is served by Horizon, Atlantic Towing, Maersk Supply Service, and Secunda Canada. [4]
Initially, Horizon was headquartered in Halifax and provided ship crews for other companies. [5] Horizon acquired its first ship, platform supply vessel MV Horizon Star, in August 2017 for US$45 million; [4] it was ordered as IES Energy by IES Pioneer [6] and launched in 2015 at the Kleven Verft shipyard in Norway, but never was delivered. [7] Horizon Star was christened by Jodie Thornton, married to Horizon executive vice-president Steve Widmeyer, on August 3, 2017 near Ultsteinvik, Norway, and delivered to Bay Bulls, Newfoundland and Labrador two weeks later. [3] [5] Horizon Star was sold to the government of Australia in 2022, which renamed it ADV Reliant. [8]
Horizon acquired Tidewater Enabler from Tidewater in November 2018; the multipurpose ship had been finished in 2010 by STX Offshore in Norway and was renamed to Horizon Enabler. [9] In March 2019, Horizon purchased anchor handling tug supply vessel (AHTS) Bourbon Arctic for US$41.5 million and renamed the ship Horizon Arctic. [4]
Heiltsuk Horizon was formed in May 2018 as a joint venture to bid on a contract to lease two emergency towing vessels to the Canadian Coast Guard. [10] After losing the bid, Heiltsuk Horizon filed a complaint with the Canadian International Trade Tribunal which asserted the winning bidder, Atlantic Towing, had switched the proposed ship masters with less-experienced ones. [11] The Miawpukek Horizon joint venture was launched in June 2020 after recruiting and developing First Nations sailors. [12]
The Miawpukek Horizon joint venture purchased MV Polar Prince (Oqwatnukewey Eleke'wi'ji'jit in Mi'kmaq) in 2021 [13] and operates it as a training ship for its cadets. [14] The ship also has been leased to Students on Ice [15] [16] and OceanGate for excursions. [17]
Horizon also has entered industry partnerships with Kotug International (as Kotug Canada, 2019) [18] and Bourbon (as Horizon Bourbon, 2023). [19] Kotug Canada mostly operates smaller tugboats; [20] in 2021, Kotug Canada acquired the AHTS MV Siem Commander from Secunda Canada [21] and renamed it K.J. Gardner, [lower-alpha 1] which is owned by Kotug and operated by Horizon. [22]

The Royal Canadian Navy is the naval force of Canada. The RCN is one of three environmental commands within the Canadian Armed Forces. As of 2023, the RCN operates 12 frigates, four attack submarines, 12 coastal defence vessels, eight patrol-class training vessels, two offshore patrol vessels, and several auxiliary vessels. Davie Shipbuilding is a shipbuilding company located in Lauzon, Quebec, Canada. The facility is now operating as Chantier Davie Canada Inc. and is the oldest continually operating shipbuilder in North America.
The IMO number of the International Maritime Organization is a generic term covering two distinct meanings. The IMO ship identification number is a unique ship identifier; the IMO company and registered owner identification number is used to identify uniquely each company and/or registered owner managing ships of at least 100 gross tons (gt). The schemes are managed in parallel, but IMO company/owner numbers may also be obtained by managers of vessels not having IMO ship numbers. IMO numbers were introduced to improve maritime safety and reduce fraud and pollution, under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
HMCS Anticosti was an Anticosti-class minesweeper that served in the Canadian Forces from 1989 to 2000. Originally an oil rig support vessel, she was purchased in 1989 and saw service until the entry of the newer Kingston-class coastal defence vessels. The ship was named for Anticosti Island, the second to bear the name. Following her Canadian naval career, Anticosti was sold to commercial interests.
Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessels are warships of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) built within the Government of Canada Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) procurement project, part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. In July 2007 the federal government announced plans for acquiring six to eight icebreaking warships for the RCN.
The National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), formerly the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS), is a Government of Canada program operated by the Department of Public Works and Government Services. The NSS was developed under the Stephen Harper Government in an effort to renew the fleets of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). The strategy was broken into three sections; the combat package, the non-combat package and the smaller vessel package. The companies who won the bids for the larger ships were not permitted to bid on the smaller vessel package. In 2019 the Trudeau Government decided to add a third shipyard to the NSS specializing in the construction of icebreakers for the Coast Guard. The agreement to incorporate Davie as a third shipyard within the NSS was finally signed in April 2023.
CCGS Sir Humphrey Gilbert is a former Canadian Coast Guard light icebreaker and buoy tender that was later sold to a private owner and renamed Polar Prince. The ship entered service with the Department of Transport Marine Service in 1959 and transferred to the newly created Canadian Coast Guard in 1962, active until 2001. The icebreaker was sold to private interests in Newfoundland and renamed Polar Prince, sitting mostly idle until resold in 2009 to GTX Technology Canada Limited for service in the Arctic Ocean as a commercial icebreaker. In 2017, the vessel was temporarily rechristened Canada C3 and used for a high-profile voyage around Canada's three maritime coasts as part of the nation's 150th anniversary. In November 2021, the ship was purchased by Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Service Ltd, a joint venture between Horizon Maritime and the Miawpukek First Nation and chartered for educational and research expedition use.
Stella Maris was a steamship built in 1882 as the Royal Navy gunboat HMS Starling and converted to steam tug in 1905. Stella Maris played a major role in the events of the Halifax Explosion in 1917.
The Maersk Peary is a tanker, operated by the shipping firm Maersk Line, that was designed for working in the polar regions.
Groupe Desgagnés is a Canadian shipping firm. It operates a fleet of nineteen vessels. Gross earnings in 2014 were around $230 million.
Jacklyn, formerly known as LPV, Stena Freighter, Stena Seafreighter, RFA Sea Chieftain, and Stena Hispanica, was a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship which was purchased by Blue Origin in 2018 for use as a landing platform ship. Ultimately, Blue Origin abandoned their plans to use the ship as a landing platform, and in August 2022, the ship was towed to the Port of Brownsville for scrapping.
HMCS Harry DeWolf is the lead ship of its class of offshore patrol vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The class was derived from the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship project as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy and is primarily designed for the patrol and support of Canada's Arctic regions. Named after Vice Admiral Harry DeWolf, a former head of the RCN, the vessel was ordered in 2011, laid down in 2016 and launched in 2018. The vessel completed contractors sea trials in July 2020, was delivered to the RCN on 31 July 2020 and began post-acceptance sea trials. Harry DeWolf was commissioned on 26 June 2021.
HMCS Margaret Brooke is the second Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The class was derived from the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship project as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy and is primarily designed for the patrol and support of Canada's Arctic regions. Named after Sub-Lieutenant Margaret Brooke, an RCN nursing sister who tried to save another person during the sinking of the ferry SS Caribou during World War II. Margaret Brooke was ordered in 2011, laid down in 2016 and launched in 2019. The vessel began contractor sea trials in May 2021, and it was delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy for post-acceptance sea trials on 15 July 2021. The official naming ceremony for the ship was conducted on 29 May 2022 in conjunction with that for sister ship Max Bernays. The vessel was commissioned on 28 October 2022.
Horizon Arctic is an anchor handling tug supply vessel (AHTS) completed in 2016 by Vard Group at its Brattvåg shipyard as Bourbon Arctic for Bourbon Offshore Norway AS, part of the Marseille-based Bourbon group. As of 2023, it is operated by Horizon Maritime of Canada. Under Horizon, it served as the surface support vessel for the Titan submersible during its 2021 and 2022 survey expeditions to the wreck of the Titanic, conducted by OceanGate.
Polar Prince, the EXCCGS Sir Humphry Gilbert, was recently purchased by Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Services Ltd., a joint venture between Horizon Maritime and Miawpukek First Nation.
