John Michael McHugh is an American politician from the U.S. state of New York who served as the 21st United States Secretary of the Army,and represented the state's 23rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.
Politics of New York have evolved over time. The Democratic Party dominates politics in the state,with the Democrats representing a plurality of voters in New York State,constituting over twice as many registered voters as any other political party affiliation or lack thereof. It is considered one of the "Big Three" Democratic strongholds along with California and Illinois. Historically,New York was a swing state,as from its inaugural election in 1792 until the 1984 election,the state voted for the winning candidate all but seven times. It voted for the winning candidate 86% of the time;however,since 1988,the state has voted Democratic by large margins and frequently provides them over 60% of the vote. Democrats have also controlled the Assembly since 1971 and the Senate since 2019. New York currently has two Democratic United States senators. New York's Class I Senate seat has been Democratic since 1959 and New York's Class III Senate seat has been Democratic since 1999. In addition,New York's House congressional delegation has had a Democratic majority since 1965.
The New York State Senate is the upper house of the New York State Legislature,while the New York State Assembly is its lower house. Established in 1777 by the Constitution of New York,its members are elected to two-year terms with no term limits. There are 63 seats in the Senate. The Democratic Party has held control of the New York State Senate since 2019. The Senate Majority Leader is Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in New York since July 24,2011 under the Marriage Equality Act. The Act does not have a residency restriction,as some similar laws in other U.S. states do. It also allows religious organizations to decline to officiate at same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Grisanti served in the State Senate from 2011 to 2014,when he was defeated in the Republican primary and in the general election. Grisanti was appointed to the New York State Court of Claims in May 2015 and later became an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York,Eighth Judicial District.
The Marriage Equality Act is a 2011 landmark New York State law that made same-sex marriage legal. The bill was introduced in the New York State Assembly by Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell and in the New York State Senate by Senator Thomas Duane. It was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on June 24,2011 and took effect on July 24,2011.
Mark C. Walczyk is an American politician and US Army Reserve Engineer Officer from the state of New York. A Republican,Walczyk represents the 49th district of the New York State Senate. Walczyk won the seat in 2022,after serving in the New York State Assembly.
