Hyacinth Iormem Alia (born 15 May 1966) is a Nigerian Catholic cleric and politician who has been a serving governor of Benue State since 29 May 2023. [1] [2] [3]
Hyacinth Alia was born on 15 May 1966, [4] in Mbangur,Mbadede,Vandeikya local government area of Benue State. [5] He got his First School Leaving Certificate from St. Francis Primary school,Agidi,Mbatiav in Gboko local government area of the state and in 1983,he enrolled at St. James Minor Seminary,Makurdi. [6] He gained admission to study at St. Augustine's Major Seminary,Jos. He studied for a diploma in Religious studies in 1987 and a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Theology in 1990. [7] In 1999,he obtained a Master's in Religious Education (Psychology and Counseling) at Fordham University,Bronx,New York City. [7] In 2004,he got an additional master's degree in biomedical ethics from Duquesne University,Pennsylvania. He received a doctorate in the same course at Duquesne in 2005,but his dissertation is not in the library holdings. [5]
Hyacinth Alia was ordained a Catholic priest on 7 July 1990,by Bishop Athanasius Atule Usuh of Makurdi Catholic Diocese. [8] In May 2022,he was suspended from his priestly faculties by William Avenya,the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gboko,since Alia had declared himself a candidate for the political office of governor. [9]
The bishop explained that "The Mother Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own Ex can. 285,3 CIC. You are aware that my son,your brother,and your priest have purchased the party forms to contest for the Governor of Benue State under the All Progressives Congress (APC),which is totally against our vocation." [10]
During the course of Alia's campaign,it was noted that he was popular among Benue indigenes due to his previous work as an alleged miracle worker.

Benue is a rich agricultural region;common crops cultivated in the state include oranges,yams,mangoes,sweet potatoes,cassava,soya bean,guinea corn,flax,sesame,rice,groundnuts and palm trees.

Ortom's tenure ended on 29 May 2023,succeeded by a Catholic priest of the opposition party,Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

Avenya is the first bishop of the diocese since its creation on 29 December 2012. He served as secretary general of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Anglophone West Africa (AECAWA).
Terhemen Tarzoor is a Nigerian Economist and Real Estate Developer from Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State in North Central Nigeria who currently serves as Nigerian Ambassador to Namibia. He previously served as Speaker in the Benue State House of Assembly in which he represented his constituency. Tarzoor came to prominence when he ran unsuccessfully for the seat of the Governor of Benue State,losing to Samuel Ortom in the 2015 General Elections. He finished runner-up despite running as a favorite candidate on the platform of the then ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He went on to challenge the result of the election in a petition filed to the Benue State Governorship Tribunal claiming that the winner,Governor Samuel Ortom,was not validly nominated to contest for the seat. His claim was however dismissed by the court of appeal on grounds that it lacked merit.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly,three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State,Kogi State,and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

Incumbent PDP Governor Samuel Ortom was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Hyacinth Alia —a suspended Catholic priest —gained the office for the APC by a 33% margin over PDP nominee House of Assembly Speaker Titus Uba.
