"Hypnotized" is a 2022 song by English singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Scottish musician Wuh Oh.

Background

The song was written by Wuh Oh and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and produced by Wuh Oh and Sega Bodega. It was first performed live by Ellis-Bextor on her Kitchen Disco Tour in March 2022. In May, a snippet of the song was previewed by Bodega on his social media. [1]

A live version of the song, which includes an extra verse, was included on the concert album Kitchen Disco – Live at the London Palladium .

"Hypnotized" was described as an "avant-pop", "disco pop", [2] "icy club banger". [3]

Ellis-Bextor performed the song on the Yarra River for the Australian breakfast TV show Sunrise . [4]

Music video

The music video was directed by Ellis-Bextor's longtime collaborator Sophie Muller and filmed at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom. [5] The cinematographer was Robbie Ryan. [6] The video pictures Ellis-Bextor clad in a tight black latex dress designed by Atsuko Kudo [7] in a Dita Von Teese-inspired styling. She performs sharp dance routines in front of a group of dancers in an abandoned theatre, leading them in a hypnotic cult-like manner. [3] It also features Wuh Oh playing music at the DJ deck. [6] The clip premiered on 26 July 2022.

Made in collaboration with Ed Harcourt, the album consists primarily of orchestral versions of Ellis-Bextor's solo singles, including her collaboration with Italian DJ Spiller, "Groovejet ", and a song from her time as part of Theaudience, "A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed". It was called an "orchestral greatest hits" by Clash. Ellis-Bextor toured the UK with a full orchestra and band in support of the album from June 2019.

Wuh Oh, real name Peter Ferguson, is a composer, producer, and performer from Bathgate, Scotland, now based in Glasgow. His music and his live act are notable for a hyper-modern musical style that has been described as "modernist avant-garde" and a performance-art element that features flamboyant custom-made outfits he creates with Glasgow School of Art.

Salvador Navarrete, better known by his stage name Sega Bodega, is an Irish-Chilean music producer, singer, songwriter, DJ and co-head/founder of record label and collective Nuxxe. Sega Bodega is known for his futuristic, bass-heavy and leftfield takes on electronic and club music, fusing various elements of UK bass and hip-hop music, deconstructed club, and trip hop music into his songs. He has also been heavily associated with the hyperpop music scene. He rose to prominence producing tracks for London-based rapper, co-founder of the Nuxxe label and close collaborator Shygirl, gaining attention from the likes of Rihanna, using various Nuxxe tracks for her Fenty Beauty commercials and fashion shows.
